I decided to try using a self healing mat as my bottom plate. It worked really well but it started eroding the instruction sheet that’s on the top of the base. I need that so I had to quit using the mat. I don’t think I was applying too much pressure since I use just the one plate on top and only shim if there’s not enough pressure to cut. Any ideas?

The Sizzix site has a lot of helpful tips on which bases, shims, and plates you need to use with specific dies. I have quite a few plates and bases for different dies. Good luck!

Can't you just turn the base over so the instructions are on the bottom? If you still need to consult them, put the base to the side, build the rest of your sandwich, then flip the base and put the other items on top of it.

Could you photo copy the instructions?

I am wondering, though, how and why the instructions are eroding. I have two thin 6x9" Olfa self healing mats as my bottom plate and they seem to be pretty ideal for cutting with just a basic acrylic top plate, no shims needed. But I just went to check and there's no sign of damage to my instructions, and I'm not quite sure how it would happen...? The edges are all beat up because I can't seem to feed anything in straight but the surface seems fine. Hopefully the problem is solved now - but it just piqued my curiosity.

joblackford I’m not sure. It surprised me too. It looks like the instructions are printed on some kind of plastic laminate and just stuck onto the base. For whatever reason the mat made the sheet bunch up and now it’s peeling off. I will say that my Big Shot is 10 plus years old (it’s the pink and black one) so maybe the mat just stuck to the already worn out sheet.
