We keep our vehicles for years, so we do buy new. However, we bought a used car for our yds when he got his license. My van is 12 years old, so it's finally time to buy a new car. Note I said car, not van. Woohoo!

We buy lease buy backs. We drive our vehicles into the ground. Our car and truck are from 2002, and our van is from 2007.

I have always bought new cars. My parents told me it was the best thing to do since no one in my family knows how to work on cars and they come with a warranty. However, it seems to me that in all my years of car ownership almost nothing I have needed done falls into the category of a warranty repair.
My current car is a 2007 Toyota Yaris. This car is awesome and so reliable. I absolutely love it and odds are I will get at least 5 more years out of it. When it's time comes though I am going to replace it with a small SUV, at this point in my life I just need more cargo space than a little car can provide. SUVs come with a much higher price tag though so I'm thinking I'll buy a used one.

I had always bought second hand until my current car. The used ones lasted so long then died of something that someone else had done to them. Always.
My current one works out at £1500 (and counting down) per year which is less per year than any of the used ones, and I've had all the features I wanted for all that time, and a familiar friend. I suppose I'm lucky. I'll run it until bits start falling off.

I bought one used (program) car that was a total lemon and cost scads in repairs that I didn’t have and swore never to buy used again. DH and I have only bought used once since then: a 2010 Outback from his father that his father had bought new. Right now, all three of our cars are at least 7 years old, all bought new, and none have had any repairs—just the typical tires, batteries, and oil. We plan on sticking with new cars, preferably Subaru’s for the rest of our lives!

We buy new and keep them forever.
Only time it bit us was with the 2012 Ford Focus. We traded it in after owning it 3 or 4 years due to the infamous transmission issues on them. Truthfully, we probably still did well enough due to the price of gas during the time we owned it and the amount of miles we put on the car. We purchased it specifically because the MPG on my Escape was killing us. We were on the road all the time between band practices and competitions.
At present, we are actively using a 97 F-150 (bought 9/96) and an 03 Escape (bought 12/02). There is also the 16 Outback that we use for travel. The other 2 have never been unreliable and sometimes are used for day trips. My Escape more so than the truck. The truck is ran daily to work. Escape school.

It’s not a crappy financial decision for us. I bought my car brand new and now it’s 14 years old. I’m going to try to wait one more year before buying another.

We buy cars that are a year or two old and usually have about 10,000 miles on them. You pay about 25% less than new, and we've also kept them forever and run them into the ground. We've never had "someone else's problems" with our used cars - you get extensive warranties from the dealer, and you can check the history of the car. All cars we've purchased had good maintenance history and records on them, no accidents. Me too. I have never bought a brand new car and I doubt I ever will. It doesn't make financial sense to me. A lot of people on this thread are saying that they buy new because they keep their cars a long time. The last 2 cars I've owned I have had for a long time. Both of them were ex-government fleet cars (so they had perfect service history) that I bought at auction: Camry station wagon, two years old - bought in 1997 and kept for 14 years Camry sedan, two years old - bought in 2011 and still driving now. I'm sure I'll have this car for at least another 4 years, so 12 years in total

I bought my first new car in 2015 at 44 yo. I hate having a car payment but it could no be avoided. It’s paid off now and I plan on driving it into the ground.

I buy new, have only had 3 cars in my life. The current one is 15 years old and I am looking to replace her next year just for the new safety features. My husband always bought used and had so many cars I can’t keep track. 3 years ago I convinced him to buy new and hopefully he will keep it as long as I have kept mine.

I hate buying used. i'm just not good at it. The two used cars I had were lemons and I was so tired of being stranded. So the last 3 were new. My MINI, which I ordered from the factory, will be 13 in June. I have a really small commute so she only has 27,000 miles on her. I really have the new car itch but can't bear to get rid of her since I love her so much. Just last month someone came to our house doing some repair work on our garage door and asked if I'd be willing to sell her. Nope, soon but not today, LOL.
Plus the up side of keeping it so long is that I've had 10 years of no car payments (I had a big down payment saved) and very minimal repairs so I have enough saved for a new car plus added a bunch to my ira's. So I've had the car I've dreamt about since I was a kid, enjoyed her for 13 years, no breaking down and money in the bank win win win win.

We always buy new and keep forever - at present, we are a Toyota family, with a 2009 Venza with 210K and a 2017 Tundra with 16K. Also in residence is a 1987 GMC pickup truck with 140K. We will replace the Venza when she is not reliable. I really hope to get 300K miles which would be 3-4 more years.
I worked with a woman who never put new tires on her vehicles. She just traded - reliability important and she just liked new. When I first met her 25+ years ago, she was putting a band aid on her vehicle.

I buy new. I trade every two years and always pay cash for the difference. I trade Honda CRV to CRV and always get the Touring package. This has worked great for me for a lot of years. I go into it knowing my numbers and will walk away if I don’t get the deal I want. I always have a warranty. You gotta do what’s right for you.

I lease so I always have a new car. I know financially it is probably not the best decision but I just don't want an old car that I'll have to fix. I love having all the new bells and whistles that come out. I’ve never leased a car before, but I’ve been thinking about it for my next car. I’m getting older, I don’t drive nearly as much as I used to, and I kinda like the idea of always having a new car. On the the other hand, I haven’t had a car payment in like 15 years. That would take some getting used to. I have been thinking the same thing lately. Dh and I both have jobs close to home. We don't do road trips. It might make sense for us to lease. But I hate having a car payment.

I buy new. Completely disagree that it's a bad financial decision. I'll make the argument that it's a good decision if you do it right. We haven't lost any money yet. We don't get huge long term loans so we get upside down. We beat them to death on price, they can take the hit when it drives off the lot, not me. We buy cars that will retain their value well. We like getting a warranty. Like not having to get inspections (missouri), like that the car is in great shape and looks nice. Love that we rarely have car problems (knock on wood). Our insurance rates are better with newer cars. We spend very little on maintenance. Plus you get all the current technology and usually some good perks like free XM and guardian. I always make them give me t-shirts which pisses them off. lol.
We trade off every 2-3 years.

We have done both. But recently in the last 5 years only used. I don’t see me spending money on a new one anymore. Just so expensive.

We bought our Hyundai Elantra new in 2001 and have no plans to replace it. It runs just fine, has pretty low miles considering its age, and we can fit both our carseats in the back (although we can't fit anyone else back there with them). We take the bus to work during the week and I get groceries through Amazon, so we mostly are driving it the 1/2 mile to/from daycare each day. We did just buy another house that is about 6 miles from our current home, and are doing a ton of work over there, so we're driving a bunch more now than we used to, but so far so good with the car. I'm hoping for another year or two of use before we buy new again. I had used cars only before this one, and had the absolute worst luck with them. I've vowed never again!

I'm not really partial either way. It just depends on what what we find when we're in the market for a car. DH's car was new when we bought it back in 2011. There's nothing wrong with it, so he's not planning on trading it in anytime soon. Mine was 2 years old when we bought it in 2017. I think we've had a pretty even mix of new/pre-owned over the years.

I've bought new twice and regretted it both times. Mostly because of my financial situation. I'm not saying I'd never buy new again, but I'd never finance a car again, so I'd have to have a lot of money saved. To me, they just aren't worth it. My current car I've had about 7 years and bought it when it was 3 years old. I'm trying to save some money for when it needs to be replaced. I think if you can easily afford it, it's fine. I think if you have other debt that needs to be paid then it's a bad idea. My dad just bought a brand new suv, but he has no other debt, had a large down payment and can easily afford to triple the payments so it will be paid off quickly. I couldn't afford to do that. I hate being car poor. JMO That's how I feel....I have a savings account at a different bank that I don't use to run my household with, that I have a set amount direct deposited from my paycheck to every 2 weeks. This money is earmarked specifically for a car. When the time comes to replace my Kia, I will pay cash with those funds.

I leased for the first time on my most recent car since I don't drive much. I turned it in last week with only 15k miles, so I felt like I didn't use the entire value of my time if that makes sense. I went back to purchasing and got a 2019 one with every option I wanted (all the options). It's importan to me to have the latest technology. I plan on keeping this one for a while.

I buy lower end cars, so I do buy brand new. When I was car shopping in 2012 a used Civic with low mileage was about $15K and brand new was $17. For $2k I like the comfort of knowing that I'm the first owner and thus know the car's entire history.

My last car was certified by my husband (since he was that guy at the dealership). It was our first used car (aside from my Dad's Ford Pinto) LOL
When my husband's old dealer screwed up repairing my Venza 3x in a row, I knew I had to pull the trigger and get another car. We bought new (Subaru Outback) - never had or even looked at Subaru before, but couldn't afford Toyota. We got great financing on it and I'm happy. I just wish they hadn't loaned us the Subaru Ascent - now I want that SUV!

I have purchased 5 cars in my lifetime: one used, the rest new. The used one gave me fits -- it was a Dodge.
I drove my Corolla for 15 years, then sold it to my brother. He's had it seven years, still runs well. I totalled my first Rav4 after three years. Working on my second new Rav4 now. It's my intention that it's the last car I'll ever have to buy. Toyotas keep their trade in value (an insurance value) well, so the financial "hit" is lessened.

We mostly buy used cars, but the 2 we have bought new we've kept longer. We had a 2005 Ford Focus that we kept until January 2018 - it started developing some issues that we decided not to put more money into. I have a Kia Sorento that I bought in January 2009 (2008 model year) that my daughter is currently driving.
The car I'm driving now is used, but had features I like. I get eanting to buy a new car so you get all the features you want.
My cars usually last longer than DH's.
