I'm so glad you started this thread. I have a dd13 whose skill has grown leaps and bounds over the last few years (due to lots of practice while sick). She loves the manga/anime as well. She's been using my 72A Ciao marker set and they are her favorite medium. I've been thinking of getting her some more. I did buy her liners for Christmas: Copic, Pentel, and UCHIDA Le Pen. I know I had Uchida Le Pen markers that I disliked when I first started scrapbooking. So I was leary of buying them. However, the Copic is the one she disliked. I'll have to ask her which she thought was best. Embri , I've copied your color information. Very helpful. Thanks. Carpediemmarkers.com has great prices, fast shipping and best price I’ve found. They have free shipping with $35 order too. They are $5.45/each. They have every color. Good luck! I couldn't remember the name of the place I ordered my first set of 72, but this is it. Thanks. **ETA** They don't have the sets any more and are sold out of the Sketch sets. @crazyforscraps, your dd is going to be thrilled. Not to highjack this thread but what is the difference between original, sketch, and ciao. Would that make a difference to an artist. Should I switch to sketch or original pens when supplementing colors?

Should I switch to sketch or original pens when supplementing colors? From what I’ve read, they all use the same exact inks, they just have different sized barrels and different nibs. The Original has a chisel and a bullet tip, Sketch has a chisel and a brush tip and the Ciao has a smaller brush tip and medium sized chisel tip. The Ciao markers are also not refillable, where the Sketch and Original versions are. ETA: Since I didn’t have any of these markers at all myself, I went with the Sketch version for a couple reasons. One, because they are refillable so over the long run they will be more economical, and two, the smaller barrel will be easier for her to hold and use because her hands are still pretty small.

The Ciao markers are also not refillable, where the Sketch and Original versions are. This is incorrect. The Ciao are re-fillable, they just don't hold as much ink. link how to re-fill

Not to highjack this thread but what is the difference between original, sketch, and ciao. Would that make a difference to an artist. Should I switch to sketch or original pens when supplementing colors? All of the Copic markers are refillable and have replaceable nibs; the differences are the barrel shape, the range of colours, reservoir size, tips, and of course the price. Ciao (round) and Sketch (oval) - Brush and Chisel Original (square) - Bullet and Chisel. Wide (BIG rectangle) - wide chisel (for big projects/backgrounds) The Sketch and Original have additional after-market nib options that can be swapped for their default tips. Which you prefer really depends more on what you are used to. The brush nib Sketch/Ciao is the most popular by far. The main differences between Ciao and Sketch are that the Sketch markers don't roll around on the table, hold a bit more ink, and come in the full range of colours. Ciao's colour range is more limited (about half of Sketch's), and fewer stores carry the sets and even less carry open stock. They're not inferior in any way though, so feel free to grab them as long as you aren't bothered by the rolling thing. They have the smallest barrels so are good for younger / beginner artists.

I'm glad you started this thread! I've been wanting to try Copics, but nothing too complicated!

I'm glad you started this thread! I've been wanting to try Copics, but nothing too complicated! If you've only used water based markers up to now, you're in for a treat - alcohol markers to me are more like watercolours than regular markers. They layer and blend beautifully on the right paper. My best advice is don't run out and buy one of every marker like I did. While I'm happy to have the Copics I do and I'd never get rid of them, there are definitely a bunch of colours that don't get used much at all or are really close as to be totally interchangeable with another. One of the things I'm happy about is that I only got one set of greys - neutral. Unless you're doing a lot of greyscale work, you don't need all (four? I think it's four, so FOURTY markers!) the sets of grey. Heck you can probably get away with skipping every second marker, and only get N1/N3/N5/N7/N9 for example (or all the even numbers). Colours in particular you probably don't want lots of: Yellow, Magenta, Red, Orange. 1-3 each of these is plenty.
