I just saw on Splitcoaststampers that SU is no longer working with Sizzix. SU dropped Project Life a few years ago and that really hurt Becky Higgins, so I guess Sizzix is now in a similar situation. It will be interesting to follow this story. I hate to lose any manufacturers, but Sizzix is really causing some bad will these days. They must be desperate. I'd like to know how badly AliExpress is hurting these craft companies.

I have no dog in this fight but I did wonder how Stephanie Barnard had Sizzix dies and then had similar dies under The Stamps Of Life brand, figured it may be a conflict of interest.

They are suing for patent infringement. A conflict of interest would only matter if she signed a non-compete, I believe.

Slight hijack, but I bet Becky H is happy this is being talked about because it has been over 24 hrs since a new post was made on her thread lol

The fact that Sizzix Ellison has a new CEO seems to factor into a lot of this. He’s probably out to prove himself by increasing profits. This would account for the layoffs as well as the lawsuits. It’s possible the former management wasn’t concerned about other companies making die/stamp sets but he figures by crushing the competition they’ll be pretty much the only game in town. All speculation of course.

Stampin Up is dropping the Big Shot, too. Super, super interesting.... I'm not entirely surprised. I can think of a couple of possible reasons (total guesswork on my part): The Big Shots have been showing up at Tuesday Morning for $50, which is a lot cheaper than SU sells them. SU can't compete with that price. It surprised me to see them at Tuesday Morning for such a low price. Did Sizzix decide to discontinue them? If so, SU would have no choice but to drop the Big Shot, but it all seems really crazy. Or perhaps Sizzix has threatened to sue SU, too? They do make matching stamps and dies, and those are the companies that seem to be getting targeted by Sizzix for lawsuits.

Could be they discontinued the partnership due to increased costs similar to what was mentioned above about the new CEO possibly trying to maximize profits.

I don't want to see Sizzix ruined, but even more, I don't want to see Sizzix ruining all these smaller companies. I get the feeling that their CEO probably doesn't play nicely with others.

Thr Sizzix dies that SU! sells are super expensive. I hope SU! starts to sell their own brand of dies, like PTI and MFT, and costs come way down.

Well that’s very interesting that SU isn’t working with Sizzix anymore. I wonder who will be manufacturing SU dies or are they moving away from those as well?

I saw something that mentioned that, going forward, Stampin Up will be working directly with the manufacturer of dies and embossing folders instead of working through a "middleman" aka Sizzix. My guess is that still means China.

My guess is that still means China. That could be one reason that Sizzix seems to be having financial difficulties. SU probably gave them a significant amount of business with their partnership. Earlier in this thread, mrsshampoo just mentioned that SU was getting rid of the Big Shot. I didn't know if she meant SU was getting rid of everything Sizzix, or just the Big Shot itself. Since SU is being sued by MSP, perhaps the Sizzix lawsuits made SU reconsider their partnership with Sizzix. Once you have been slapped with a lawsuit that you feel is unjust, it would be very hard to be impartial about any company that seems to be using the courts to eliminate their competition.

I saw on another forum that someone made a video throwing her Big Shot in the trash and there is a movement afoot. Not sure if that is true but “they” swear it’s true.

I doubt I’d throw out equipment I already own that still works. I come from a family of people who are almost hoarders. I mean, I still have my heavy, original sizzix lever machine.

Not sure about other countries but in the US, the trimmer blades and accessories should be available until September. They might be out of stock and not orderable at times though. When the retiring list comes out on April 15th the limit will be raised to 6.

Dramatic gesture, but it's not like it really hurts Sizzix. They already have the money I spent on my Big Shot and Sizzix dies. Throwing away my Sizzix products won't get that money back. Refusing to buy from them any more and giving my business from now on to the companies being sued by Sizzix is the best I can do. If enough people do that, Sizzix should hopefully get the message.

I still have my heavy, original sizzix lever machine I do too. I still have all my dies and alphabets too. The first Sizzix alphabet I bought (Shadow Box) they sold the letters individually and I would go to Michael's every week and buy a few letters. Wow, I just did a search on them out of curiosity and they are listed on Amazon for $265.99. What?! www.amazon.com/Shadow-Box-Alphabet-Set-Sizzix/dp/B001AUHIKO

Yea, I’m not throwing out equipment I already own, but I’m not buying anything else Sizzix. Sadly though many consumers have short memories. I’m afraid that many TH fans will still buy his Sizzix stuff.

My guess is that still means China. We have been told the manufacturer SU works with will be US-based and they expect they will be much more responsive, so supply issues should improve 👍🏻They must have the die and embossing folder supply figured out (although there will be a transition as Sizzix produced items are depleted) although it will take longer to get the new machine details.

Sad to hear Sizzix is having layoffs. I hope it is not too extensive. I really like the Sizzix dies from the first designer on this thread. I have several dies by her. Sad to hear that she is no longer with Sizzix.

I just posted this on the lawsuit thread on the cardmaking board, but thought I'd post it here too, as it's relevant to the discussion: Jennifer McGuire just posted a link to this statement from Hero Arts in her Instagram stories and said she stands with them. Here's the text of the post: "You may have heard that Ellison, the parent company of Sizzix, has made claims of patent infringement against a number of companies in our industry, including Hero Arts. Just so you know, there is absolutely no reason to change any purchasing patterns with Hero Arts, as Hero Arts does not infringe, believes the lawsuit is without merit, and intends to fight this lawsuit and win for the good of Hero Arts and the industry. Whether we like it or not, the legal process is a method to resolve disputes, and we must let that play out. There is no reason to allow a chill on creativity or a disruption to business to creep into our beloved industry despite the current situation. In fact, let's work to do just the opposite and rally together to make our community even stronger. Hero Arts and the other companies involved remain the same creative, reliable, top selling brands you trust and love. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask us at info@heroarts.com or leave a comment."

I love my lever Sizzix. It's my go-to for die cutting, because most of the pieces I work with are super-duper tiny. It can chomp out a die cut or two in a second, far faster than a crank or rotary machine. Doesn't hurt that the thing is built like a tank either - I bet it'll outlive any Big Shot.
