I don't believe anything that comes from the left wing media mouthpieces at CNN or MSNBC, but I will believe what a member in this thread said happens at the border. If she lives it, she knows the truth. You are willing to dismiss a Texas Republican Congressman representing a border district for anecdotal scare stories? She isn't living it, she is repeating stories that have little basis in truth. Hello, I am living it. Not as an undocumented immigrant (although you don't know that really). I am not repeating any stories. I shared some personal experiences/opinions, in which yours differ. That is totally fine. We can do that. For anyone else curious about if I am allowed to have an opinion, or curious about where I am coming from, I live in one of the busiest corridors for drug, human, gun and money trafficking. I taught Head Start for 18 years. I now work in Law Enforcement. I know how many undocumented immigrants we turn over to border patrol on a daily basis. I know what crimes they are accused of committing on the way, and how those charges play out. I know how much drugs, money and guns the agency I work for seizes daily. I know the 90 year old grandma who can no longer get homeowners insurance on the home her husband built with his bare hands, because one too many times, the car being chased by border patrol has missed the little curve and rolled into her home. I know how many of her windows have been shot out. I know how many undocumented immigrants have passed away in her yard and the street in front of it. I know how many times my hose has been turned on and left on in the middle of the night. I know how many times my fence has been cut. I know how many calls I have personally taken for undocumented persons lost in the desert having been abandoned or harmed by a smuggler. I could go on and on and on. It really is OK with me if people disagree with me.We all have different life experiences, but I am not making up or repeating stories. Again, I am not for the wall. It will not fix the problem. I am not pro trump. But there are problems along this part of the open border that need to be addressed for the sake of both the US and the undocumented immigrant.

I read an article not too long ago about a manufacturing town that was hiring lots and lots of immigrants. not because they didn't want to hire their locals. They tried! The problem was, they did regular drug testing because the workers have to operate machinery. many of the locals used drugs and alcohol and couldn't pass the drug tests so they couldn't be hired. Immigrants became desirable employees because many of their religions frown upon drug and alcohol use so drug testing was no problem for them. They were hard and dependable workers. So, If immigrants are "stealing" jobs, then ask you have to ask yourself why you aren't qualified to get a job or keep one. There are many articles out there: Youngstown, OH and Erie, Pennsylvania are two that I was able to find pretty quickly. Even Linkedin got in on it and wrote an article.

My husband is literally desperate for people but can't find people who can pass a drug test. They're running a super small crew and lots of hours but can't adjust the drug policy because of the equipment. Even in my tiny town there are job postings at the restaurant, the pizza shop, and the market. The restaurant owner needs 3 cooks for the summer but keeps hiring people who end up not showing up. Please, send us all the brown people who have work ethic and can pass a drug test.

The only crisis we have is Trump.
People who are insisting there are thousands of immigrants crashing our borders need to read up on people seeking asylum in our country. It is a true and LEGAL process. We had thousands seek asylum after the Viet Nam war. The people settled in our country, got jobs, pay taxes and are now productive members of society.

I do not think there is a crisis. And I for sure do not believe being a long ass wall will do anything to prevent people coming here illegally. There are more ways in than just The border at Mexico.
What needs to happen is massive immigration reform. The govnment needs to make the process simpler, less costly, and faster for people to become legal citizens. I am not a politician, nor an immigration expert so I do not know how to make that happen. But I am positive that people who have actually studied this issue could make those three things happen.
But reforms are never a priority for Congress. Especially the current Republican Congress.

We don't even need to grant full citizenship - we have many people who would love to be able to come in for a season or two, work, then return to their home country. We used to have a program like that for the migrant farm workers. My suggestion would be to offer a program like this: Offer a work visa good for 1-2 years. At the end of the 1-2 years, if the worker has no criminal offenses and has been gainfully employed, extend the via for 5 years. Adjust the number of visas issued to meet the needs of the economy. For refugees and asylum seekers, obviously this would be different. They would need a path to citizenship. Get more immigration judges and more workers to where they are needed, so cases can be processed judiciously and efficiently. Allow them to work temporarily while you process their case. Give them the ability to support themselves but also make sure that the system has enough resources that they aren't in limbo for 5-10 years. These will never happen because it means admitting people into the country who aren't white. They aren't rich Russians trying to give their children birth citizenship. Hmmmm....just came up with a business plan. 1. teach a bunch of refugee women a few key phrases in Russian 2. Buy a bunch of really expensive clothing items and jewelry pieces for them to wear 3. Book them a room in one of the Trump properties for a couple of weeks 4. Once they're in the country, make sure a Trump employee hears them say something in Russian and sees them looking really rich 5. Have them refer to "my husband" and mention that he's thinking of "investing in some real estate" 6. They're now safe to move around the country - if someone wants to deport them, they can say the Russian phrase for "I have seen the pee-pee tape."

I don't doubt your experience, but is this a recent crisis or an ongoing problem? Will turning away central Americans seeking refugee status, or keeping them and their children incarcerated, solve the problem? In my view, the Trump administration is using stories like yours to demonize refugees. He's lumping them together with the ongoing problem of cartel crime **because all the people involved have brown skin and speak Spanish.** I believe we have a humanitarian crisis with central American refugees who need help, and we are failing miserably in our moral and ethical duty to provide it. I believe we have an ongoing problem with drug cartel crime that is unrelated to the refugees. And I think it's a shame and a crime that our president has used fears about the latter to justify his actions toward the former.

Even if you hate Trump with every fiber of your being, do you honestly think he is wrong about the border crisis? I am not a Trump supporter but I do agree that there a problem with border security. I don't think a $5 billion wall is the solution because we have 4 borders not just one and there are more issues than just illegal immigration (drug trafficking, sex trafficking, etc.) Trump says the democrats are for "open borders" which is untrue. Just because the democrats don't believe a wall is the solution doesn't mean they don't want secure borders because they do. I don't think people should be able to come into the country illegally. I do think they need to come in legally, there is a system for that but I do think we need immigration reform since many people come in illegally because they cannot afford to come in legally. We can't just have people crossing into the country without being documented - while a lot of people trying to enter are good people, there are also criminals, terrorist, etc. too. We need stronger secure borders AND immigration reform.

I have a nurse friend who works for a large children's hospital clinic. 90% of the children they see have parents who are NOT paying for the services they receive and yes, most are Hispanic and Arabic. So yes, there is a crisis, because we are all paying to fund illegals who are not contributing. (I realize there are also many legals who don't contribute.) I think everyone should have to legally be in this country and along with every country in the world. The breakdown of the immigration system is what needs to be fixed - it has failed. I also think that people should be drug tested before they receive welfare, etc. Something has to change.

Why aren't we properly staffing the agencies and courts set up to deal with asylum seekers? Why aren't we supporting the humanitarian agencies trying to help with the very real humanitarian crisis at our border and throughout Central America? Why are we continuing to pursue policies to destabilize Central American and reduce aid to the populations that are fleeing their desperate circumstances? Why are we still funding and training right wing militias and police squads in Central America? Are we doing anything to make legal immigration a legitimate possibility for the people seeking a better life? Are we considering whether the war on drugs has enriched and empowered cartels that terrorize people in their communities and continuously results in criminals and criminal activity coming to our border communities? Why are we prosecuting the humanitarian activists setting out food and water in the deserts to try to save the lives of those poor people taken advantage of and/or abandoned by the evil coyotes the President likes to ramble on ignorantly about?
I'm sick to death of stupid platitudes about "illegals" and people so bizarrely focused on their apparent innate superiority because of where their dad happened to fertilize their mom and the happy accident of their birth on the right side of an arbitrary and imaginary line drawn in the desert dust. As if someone is somehow entitled to more basic human decency because he lucked out and was born in Tuscaloosa but that kid born in San Salvador should just suck it up and be happy with eating garbage scraps and definitely should have the moral fortitude not to join the gang that threatens to rape his sister if he doesn't toe the line. Our immigration policy is obscene and our broken Congress bears 100% of the responsibility for that. The rhetoric coming out of this White House and the Republican party right now is flat on monstrous and I'm done pretending to be nice and understanding of the point of view of people who play on subconscious racism to stoke fear and and hatred of other people who are every bit as equal and entitled to basic human rights as the person getting punch drunk on a constant diet of Fox News and Breitbart.

Nope, no crisis. Have you been to San Diego? It is a lovely city, a city right on the border. If there was really a crisis there would be martial law there.
Also, I live in what Trump describes as a "sanctuary city". My neighborhood is extremely diverse. The car dealerships down the street park $100,000 Maserati cars in lots without fences. I am 100 miles from the border. There is no crisis.
I'm happy to post pictures of my neighborhood so you can see the reality not what is hyped on television.

What is the alternative? "I'm sorry, your parents are too poor for you to be sick. It's quite sad but that's just the way it is." Charles Dickens would feel right at home in modern day America.
Also, the term "illegals" is absolutely awful.
That they apparently share and discuss this information between each other is unethical and immoral. That they then gossip about it with uninvolved third parties and share anecdote as though it proves some underlying fact is even worse.

I believe it is a crisis of Trump's making. A news report I heard just yesterday said that when Trump took office illegal immigration was at it's lowest point EVER. And now it is at a high point. Why? because of Trump. I think we have to solve the illegal immigration issue, but I don't believe it is a crisis except in Trump's eyes because he needs something to pander to his base.
I think there are ways to work on the issue that don't involve a wall from coast to coast. We need more agents and more immigration judges to handle the asylum seekers, not cages to keep them in. I saw an interview with an immigration judge who said that Trump has cut the number of judges and there aren't enough to process the people coming in. We need more not less.
We need to deal with the Dreamers and find a path to citizenship for immigrants who want a better life.
The notion that "the country is full" is ridiculous. Trump is ridiculous. And the Republicans just go along instead of trying to solve the issue. Congress needs to just ignore him and start doing their job the way they used to before he came along. They need to show him they really don't need him to govern the way they should.

Where did I say they shouldn't??? I'm talking about how the bills are paid. Please tell me what term I should be using to be politically correct?? It is not unethical to generally discuss the runnings of the office. I'm pretty sure they are not naming names to each other, and she definintely isn't to me. My friend is venting. It's very frustrating for her.

Fascinating.

It's not about being politically correct. It is about both being accurate and not using dehumanizing language. First, they're people so they should be referred to with a noun and not just an adjective. Undocumented immigrant may be accurate in some cases. Asylum seeker might be more appropriate in other cases. Moreover, being present in the United States without documentation is not a crime so it's not illegal. It's a civil violation. And since you have no idea in most cases how someone came to be in the United States - whether they crossed the border illegally or whether they just overstayed a properly issued visa - and since 2/3 of all undocumented immigrants in the US came here legally, using the phrase "illegals" is not only rude but likely wrong much of the time it's being used.

I'm talking about how the bills are paid. Please tell me what term I should be using to be politically correct?? They aren't "illegals." Your first change should be to stop referring to fellow human beings as "illegals." Do you also refer to other people as fats, uglies, or stupids? You can be a fat person, or an ugly person or a stupid person - but you're not referred to as a fat. They are illegal immigrants if you insist upon including that word, not "illegals." But in this case, if your friend is working at a children's hospital and is treating children, I believe that the appropriate term to use in referring to them is: children. Or, perhaps the term " patients" would be appropriate. What kind of country do we live in where someone would look down on a child because his or her parents can't afford treatment? It's a child. Not an illegal, not an animal, not vermin, not a parasite. A child who is sick or hurt and needs treatment and care.

I am curious what drug people are using that is causing them to fail the drug test? Weed? Freaking legalize it already. Such a stupid thing to not hire someone for. Even if weed is legalized you STILL can’t operate equipment while high. The issue is traces of weed stay in your blood long after your high. So ‘weed, just legalized it already’ won’t solve the problem of people failing drug tests If weed is going to be legalized then they need to invent/discover a better tests. Weekend weed smoker will still fail a drug test during the week, but be ‘sober’ With the test, they can’t tell the difference from the person lighting up in the bathroom at work & then going to operate equipment & the sober person who vaped THC last week on vacation.

No. Even when they legalize weed you will still not be able to work while under the influence. My understanding is it will be regulated the same way alcohol is. Meaning you can’t come to work drunk, operate and drive heavy machinery while drunk. And you absolutely shouldn’t be able to work while stoned.

I also think that people should be drug tested before they receive welfare, etc. Something has to change. Again, this impacts the kids, not the parents. So a 3 year old will go with no food, because mom or dad can't stop using heroin that they were hooked on? In most states, if they do UAs, they have to offer state funded treatment (if the parents hold no health insurance) if the UA is positive. So now, instead of just paying for the assistance, the state is paying for CD treatment for a heroin user (long 6mos to a year), foster care for the children of the user and the assistance the parent was looking for in the first place, for the child.

I am curious how nurses know who is and who is not paying? She knows the person working the front desk. Oh, yes, the word of one employee at a hospital. She couldn't be at all biased, and she definitely sees every patient who comes in. I'm sure her "90%" figure is completely accurate. Taking crap like this as gospel, spreading it around, and forming political opinions based on it is so much what's wrong with our country today. Same shit, different day as people complaining about the "welfare queens" that they "know" who buy the most expensive groceries and drive a big fancy car and have their nails done all the time and use an EBT card at checkout and say this is "proof" of rampant welfare fraud. Also curious how she "knows" the patients aren't in the US legally? I've never been asked to provide proof of citizenship at a hospital. I am positive she's not making any assumptions based on skin color. Certainly no one would do that. Garbage like this infuriates me.

She knows the person working the front desk. That sounds like a HIPAA violation. Not if she's not disclosing protected/identifying health information. But certainly it's frowned upon and probably an employer policy violation to tell others that 90% of those patients don't pay and they're Hispanic and Arabic.

So now, instead of just paying for the assistance, the state is paying for CD treatment for a heroin user (long 6mos to a year), foster care for the children of the user and the assistance the parent was looking for in the first place, for the child.
Most states which have drug tested have stopped, because the expense of testing FAR EXCEEDS the amount of assistance that went to drug users.
