I've had to pass drug tests to get my teaching license, to be hired in my old district, and to be hired at my current school. My husband, who is an executive in the energy industry, is also subject to drug testing. Yep but others do not. I teach no drug test. I know others no drug test. But you are right some do and some don't. But I do remember getting my job at the grocery store drug test. Getting my job at a farm store drug test. I work in a school district and have never had a drug test. But.... I was hired over 20 years ago. For some time now (don't know how long) new hires have had to have these tests. So I think it just depends on the procedures that are in place where you work. My dh has always worked in the private sector and to my knowledge, has never had a drug test. My MIL worked for a school transportation company, doing bookkeeping in the office. She was constantly sent for drug tests. She'd go into work and then would be told that it was her turn for the random test. She actually had to drive to a clinic or center somewhere, do the test, and then go back to work when finished.

I have a nurse friend who works for a large children's hospital clinic. 90% of the children they see have parents who are NOT paying for the services they receive and yes, most are Hispanic and Arabic. So yes, there is a crisis, because we are all paying to fund illegals who are not contributing. (I realize there are also many legals who don't contribute.) I think everyone should have to legally be in this country and along with every country in the world. The breakdown of the immigration system is what needs to be fixed - it has failed. I also think that people should be drug tested before they receive welfare, etc. Something has to change. Your nurse friend is lying. She has no idea who pays what.

At my office visits I pay a copay at reception. I would assume the person at the desk would have access to my insurance info. But not having insurance doesn't indicate a single thing about immigration status. There's just no way around a lot of assumptions being made by this front desk person, and it sounds like they are largely based on the ethnicity of the patients and their parents.

What is the alternative? "I'm sorry, your parents are too poor for you to be sick. It's quite sad but that's just the way it is." Charles Dickens would feel right at home in modern day America. Also, the term "illegals" is absolutely awful. That they apparently share and discuss this information between each other is unethical and immoral. That they then gossip about it with uninvolved third parties and share anecdote as though it proves some underlying fact is even worse. Of course they should receive treatment. Where did I say they shouldn't??? I'm talking about how the bills are paid. Please tell me what term I should be using to be politically correct?? It is not unethical to generally discuss the runnings of the office. I'm pretty sure they are not naming names to each other, and she definintely isn't to me. My friend is venting. It's very frustrating for her. Your friend should find another job. In my job, in a large urban medical center, I have no idea who is paying what, nor do I give a single fuck. My job is to provide compassionate nursing care, not check my patientsโ financials.

Non-responsive but reading between the lines, yes, I guess you'd be cool with that. I would not and I'm guessing millions of other Americans would not. As for whether it's an isolated incident, no, I'm sure it's not. It's quite evident that there is no end to the capacity of human beings to be immoral, and unethical and totally uncaring about anyone but themselves.

Not sure what you are insinuating here but I do not care what some front line receptionist thinks about me. Probably my age, but IDGAF what anyone thinks of me. If you are saying I am immoral, unethical and uncaring then you are way off base. Admittedly I am exhausted so I may not have the best comprehension at the moment.

I am curious how nurses know who is and who is not paying? She knows the person working the front desk. So, when she says that people arenโt paying is she referring to people who are on Medicaid? Or is she saying that people arenโt paying anything at all? I have a hard time believing that a hospital front desk person knows all about what someone is paying beyond what insurance they have (or donโt).

i don't know about other areas but undocumented people are some of the hardest working people i have ever seen. they will do the jobs that others think they are too good to do. they work long hours for little pay that they are often exploited for. they are kind and helpful. they have strong family values and don't draw unwanted attention to themselves. they want to remain in the shadows because they know their presence here is precarious. they only go to the doctor when it's absolutely necessary because they are intimidated by the questions and paperwork. i would rather deal with the undocumented any day instead of the citizens who don't want to work and feel they are entitled to just draw public benefits. Amen! I have lived in So Cal my entire life and have known many undocumented people. Above is exactly what I have seen and experienced. They are the hardest working most honest people that I have ever met. On the flip side of that are the people I have known who have drug problems, breed and suck off welfare/tax payers, sell drugs, are perfectly healthy and refuse to work. Each and every person (some close relatives, some neighbors and some acquaintances) that I know who are like that are white. Each and every one (no exaggeration).

Not only are Trump's people saying so, but so are some officials who served under Obama. what is the crisis? how does it affect you? i've seen lots of pictures of crowds of brown people inside fencing, but that is only because trump wanted to "prosecute" people (while ignoring claims of asylum) without a plan for doing so. it's his typical knee-jerk reaction. no plan. he only knows he wants to do the opposite of what obama did. and we KNOW that children are being given over to adoption (betsy devos' family owns a foster care agency/system), others are already gone and being trafficked - never to be reunited, and still others are lingering in centers because there is no plan. many are being molested. imagine. you have to flee your country and after a grueling trip your children are TAKEN. TAKEN. THERE WAS NO PLAN! that is the crisis.

I am brown and I am a citizen of this country. I know someone who is white, blonde haired, blue eyed and is not a citizen of this country. Reading some of the replies here, I think some of you will think I am an โillegalโ if you saw me on the street and think that white person is a โlegalโ and is paying for my insurance.
(I am going to be judgmental here for a second with my next sentence) Guess what though - my taxes are paying for free state insurance (arizona has ahccs) for my friendโs sister and her husband and their 6 kids while they refuse to work (no health issues), refuse to vaccinate their youngest child and are pregnant again. So STFU with border crisis drama. A few Canadian friends that winter in AZ and are more likely to be mistaken for Americans than their Hispanic neighbors whose roots in the area predate it becoming a US territory.

Not only are Trump's people saying so, but so are some officials who served under Obama. I read as answers: - drug testing for jobs (doesn't equate to border crisis) - drug testing welfare (doesn't equate to border crisis) - not paying for medical bills (doesn't equate to border crisis) - Illegals are taking jobs because US citizens are druggies (doesn't equate to border crisis) - Asylum seekers (doesn't equate to a border crisis) - need more border patrol due to response time on border (doesn't equate to border crisis) - Immigration trending down (doesn't equate to border crisis) - Old white people need immigrants to help pay for their medical and social security (not a border crisis) - people cross the border illegally but the problem is visas not the crossings (not a border crisis) - Problem in schools, trespassing, etc (equating to a border crisis) - Immigrants can't rape people and take your jobs. (not a border crisis) - If one person lived it then it has to be true for all (Love this one for a border crisis for everyone based on one) - coming to the US legally is hard (not a border crisis) - drugs at border (not a border crisis) I can keep going here. So what exactly is this massive crisis at our border? From this thread I still can't figure out what the MASSIVE BORDER CRISIS IS. So confused.

Malcolm Gladwell in his Revisionist History podcast did an episode about the immigration crisis and it was really interesting. Not sure I am completely on board with his analysis, but a lot of it did make sense regarding circular immigration.
Basically, and this is a very poor summary, is that when the border was loosely monitored, people crossed freely to work and then went back home. Once America started to crack down, the cost of being caught crossing the border jumped substantially, which encouraged workers to stay versus going back home.
Anyway, itโs a different take and made me rethink the issue.

So random un-named โofficialsโ know more about the border than say a Republican congressman who represents a huge portion of the border? Can you provide links to those officials statements? ( other than the fear mongers at Fox? ) I provided at least 4 links from/about Congressman Hurd. From various different sources. Sorry but I discount anything Trump says as he lies daily. I think he would be hard put to know the truth if it bit him ( as my mother would say ) He has lied for the last 2.6 decades that Iโm aware of there is very little I would ever believe from him. When someone shows you who they are believe them and Trump showed who he was in Atlantic City.

Yeah it amazes me that people get drug tested to work at a grocery store, gas stations, and other jobs that require no education. Yet teacher jobs (at least where I work), our government employees, and other jobs no drug testing. Makes total sense to me. If you're working with equipment that can be a danger, I'd want people tested. I don't think that education has anything to do with it. The job I do can have a huge impact on people's lives, can jail them or send them to prison. Those decisions require a clear head, right? My Dad was a janitor at an elementary school. No education needed. Should he have been allowed to use drugs while working? My sister is an accountant for a large national company. Clear head needed, right? My uncle works for a large company that makes heart valves. No education needed, he can use, right?
If you're working where you impact other people's lives or with equipment/materials that can be dangerous, you should be randomly screened.

Can't alcohol do the same thing? Why are these people not being tested for drinking? Oh yeah because that is legal. Being high on weed doesn't last 15 hours. If I smoke at 6pm and stop I will be completely sober by midnight. So that point is invalid.

Hello, I am living it. Not as an undocumented immigrant (although you don't know that really). I am not repeating any stories. I shared some personal experiences/opinions, in which yours differ. That is totally fine. We can do that. For anyone else curious about if I am allowed to have an opinion, or curious about where I am coming from, I live in one of the busiest corridors for drug, human, gun and money trafficking. I taught Head Start for 18 years. I now work in Law Enforcement. I know how many undocumented immigrants we turn over to border patrol on a daily basis. I know what crimes they are accused of committing on the way, and how those charges play out. I know how much drugs, money and guns the agency I work for seizes daily. I know the 90 year old grandma who can no longer get homeowners insurance on the home her husband built with his bare hands, because one too many times, the car being chased by border patrol has missed the little curve and rolled into her home. I know how many of her windows have been shot out. I know how many undocumented immigrants have passed away in her yard and the street in front of it. I know how many times my hose has been turned on and left on in the middle of the night. I know how many times my fence has been cut. I know how many calls I have personally taken for undocumented persons lost in the desert having been abandoned or harmed by a smuggler. I could go on and on and on. It really is OK with me if people disagree with me.We all have different life experiences, but I am not making up or repeating stories. Again, I am not for the wall. It will not fix the problem. I am not pro trump. But there are problems along this part of the open border that need to be addressed for the sake of both the US and the undocumented immigrant. Is this new, though? I don't doubt your experience, but is this a recent crisis or an ongoing problem? Will turning away central Americans seeking refugee status, or keeping them and their children incarcerated, solve the problem? In my view, the Trump administration is using stories like yours to demonize refugees. He's lumping them together with the ongoing problem of cartel crime **because all the people involved have brown skin and speak Spanish.** I believe we have a humanitarian crisis with central American refugees who need help, and we are failing miserably in our moral and ethical duty to provide it. I believe we have an ongoing problem with drug cartel crime that is unrelated to the refugees. And I think it's a shame and a crime that our president has used fears about the latter to justify his actions toward the former. so sorry it took so long to reply to you! My stories in general are not new. I do thing the violence is increasing but I do not have statistical evidence to prove that, just anecdotal stories. I absolutely think there is a huge difference in refugees and the cartel crime/individuals looking to come illegally. I agree that our country can and should do better with the refugees who need help. I am sorry if I lumped it all together, I did not mean to...I was just sharing my personal experiences with some of the problems at the border, as I see them. As to the answers to all of the problems, I don't really have any and feel that it will take more than one solution, since there is more than one problem.

The issue is that with urine tests, the test is actually for the metabolite of the chemical. So they're actually testing for what they body has already processed.

Why aren't we properly staffing the agencies and courts set up to deal with asylum seekers? Why aren't we supporting the humanitarian agencies trying to help with the very real humanitarian crisis at our border and throughout Central America? Why are we continuing to pursue policies to destabilize Central American and reduce aid to the populations that are fleeing their desperate circumstances? Why are we still funding and training right wing militias and police squads in Central America? Are we doing anything to make legal immigration a legitimate possibility for the people seeking a better life? Are we considering whether the war on drugs has enriched and empowered cartels that terrorize people in their communities and continuously results in criminals and criminal activity coming to our border communities? Why are we prosecuting the humanitarian activists setting out food and water in the deserts to try to save the lives of those poor people taken advantage of and/or abandoned by the evil coyotes the President likes to ramble on ignorantly about? I'm sick to death of stupid platitudes about "illegals" and people so bizarrely focused on their apparent innate superiority because of where their dad happened to fertilize their mom and the happy accident of their birth on the right side of an arbitrary and imaginary line drawn in the desert dust. As if someone is somehow entitled to more basic human decency because he lucked out and was born in Tuscaloosa but that kid born in San Salvador should just suck it up and be happy with eating garbage scraps and definitely should have the moral fortitude not to join the gang that threatens to rape his sister if he doesn't toe the line. Our immigration policy is obscene and our broken Congress bears 100% of the responsibility for that. The rhetoric coming out of this White House and the Republican party right now is flat on monstrous and I'm done pretending to be nice and understanding of the point of view of people who play on subconscious racism to stoke fear and and hatred of other people who are every bit as equal and entitled to basic human rights as the person getting punch drunk on a constant diet of Fox News and Breitbart. ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐

I think there is a crisis at the border, but not the crisis that Trump believes there is.
There is a humanitarian crisis. There needs to be immigration reforms. There needs to be an easier way for migrant workers to come into the US to work, because YES, we need them! I've lived all my life in So.Cal. I grew up in area that was predominately Hispanic. Were they here illegal? I do not know and I didn't care. They were good, hardworking neighbors and fellow students. Yes, we had gangs, yes, we had crime, but I did not grow up scared of them.
As for the other topic in this thread, I work for a large corporation, and all new employees must see a company doctor for a physical and a blood/urine test. And depending on your job responsibilities, some positions require annual or surprise blood/urine tests.

The crisis isnโt a need for a wall, nor to cage up children, nor separate them for months years from their parents.
Trump administration is killing off any workings that would help with the immigration process.
They could be working to make the process orderly, organized and not so overwhelming but they donโt, they keep firing people or reducing the help and funding.
Trump doesnโt want foreigners in the USA. He has CLEARLY stated that they are not good people, six ways to Sunday. He did the same thing with his โMuslim banโ.
Trump wants the border wall solely to put his name on it. Period. The world has seen that he wants the wall, only the wall and nothing but the wall. Everything else that would make immigration better be damned.
Trump is creating the crisis. Adding gasoline to an already burning fire.
Itโs terribly sad that there are still people who cannot/will not/refuse to see what he is doing with anyone who is not white.

It is astonishing to me that people are outraged by the so-called โmassive border crisisโ when the outrage should be reserved for this administration's policy of separating children from parents, not keeping records of where the children were relocated and to whom they belong, and not thinking it is any big deal nor feeling any sense of obligation to, at the very least, reunite them with their parents. Donโt give me this โit will take months to locate the parents, or we'll just put them in foster care for future adoptionโ bullshit! If it werenโt for the ACLU and the courts, I hate to think about the extent of these human rights violations. These are human beings, not fucking puppies. I'm sorry, but if you are coming here to post your outrage about all the brown people storming our borders, you should be ashamed. And any decent and honorable human being understands the real problem and does not buy into the lies spun by our sociopath of a president and his sadistic minion Stephen Miller.

Itโs really hypocrisy because who does Trump think cleans his hotels and towers, builds his buildings, processes the food that lands on his table, trims the trees and mows the acres of turf on his golf courses, washes the dishes at Mar-a-Lago, on and on? Anyone who thinks that undocumented immigrants are not integral to the US economy is fooling himself. In 2016 alone, these people contributed $13 BILLION to the Social Security trust fund, the benefits of which they wonโt ever see AND $3 BILLION to Medicare. State and local taxes they paid are reported to be over $10 BILLION. I live in Chicago, one of the largest cities that house undocumented workers. Due to the great recession in 2008 and the fear of heightened deportations in 2017 and 2018, this workforce has been reduced to unprecedented levels. Now, I know Iโm only speaking of one city here but Chicago is the third largest in the U.S. We depend on this undocumented workforce so much, not only for the labor but for the tax revenue and their spending, that if the downward trend continues, itโll be a huge economic blow not just to Chicago but to the entire state of Illinois. Some people donโt seem to realize how devastating this could be to many industries โ manufacturing, agriculture, construction, foodservice, leisure and hospitality, and many others. Any serious policies to immigration reform has to take that and the above into serious consideration because this country might be sorry it got what it asked for when it voted for Trump.
