My son is looking for ideas to suggest for his high school service group next year. One idea is sending cards and letters to troops, or maybe even the families of troops. Does anyone have a group they like to support? He also heard about a group that decorates pillowcases, but I can't find any that do that. The kids can't do any fundraising, and the organization they support must be a 501(C)3 non-profit according to school rules. lovemybeagleman I am tagging you because of previous Operation Write Home posts. I hope it doesn't bother anyone, I'm going to ask on the other board too.

We did this as junior Girl Scouts and our NJ state Senator ( not US senator for NJ ) took care of sending the boxes for us!! So he might not need a group. We sent 5 boxes to 5 different places. One box we sent a flag that they sent us back with a picture of them & took it up in their black hawk helicopter - it’s in our troop tonecapsule when they are older and wxntbyo open that.
However that was 10 years ago so rules might be changed.

So if no fundraising, is the school going to provide a budget? Or are the students/parents supposed to donate? Because even cards need supplies. Pillowcase decorating too.

I work at a VA Hospital and someone came and gave each resident a themed pillowcase. No one has those pillow cases anymore because once they went to the laundry truck they never came back. So I do not recommend a Veterans Hospital for pillow cases or blankets.
Also at our hospital I've said before that cards come to each unit in stuffed paper bags and boxes and most all of them get tossed in the trash can because there just isn't any room for them. One of our therapists displays some and puts a few stacks out for taking if someone wants, but that is maybe 20 of 2000.
If I was going to make a suggestion I would forget those ideas and instead collect clothes and shoes for a women's shelter or a homeless program. One idea I love is getting donated purses or cheap ones from thrift stores and fill them with tampons, waterless shampoo, hand sanitizer, snacks, clean socks, ... and donate them to a homeless shelter. Same thing with tote bags someone might donate to be used.
You can also do tote bags for children at a homeless shelter or women's shelter and fill them with children's books, small toys, snacks, etc.
As a social worker I love to see those who are most needy be the recipients of generosity, especially from young people interested in community service.
