Very sad to see. Nearly 1,000 years old. I hope the building survives.

I'm sick at the thought of loss of life and history.
I hope the firefighters get it out soon and without injury.

It's been burning for 50 minutes now and they're struggling to put it out. Fire started where they were renovating the building, under the roof.
Roof above the nave just collapsed. The sound of the sirens of fire trucks is madness. French journos say it is extremely dangerous for the firemen now and they must evacuate. Very sad to see this piece of history go.

Okay, now I apologize for saying I hope the building survives. I’ve moved on to hoping actual people survive. Holy hell, what a disaster.

French journalists reporting live are saying they're evacuating in case of major/complete collapse of the building.

French media are not reporting about casualties right now or firemen looking for people inside. I don't think we'll hear about possible firemen being hurt (or worse) until later so I'm just crossing my fingers none of them got caught up in the several collapses. One of the journalists we were watching did mention firemen backing away minutes before the first roof collapse so hopefully, that's the silver lining.

The spire was 93m high and the firemen couldn't get the water up there, alas.
Chief architect has confirmed no workmen were inside the building when the fire began.
Due to the renovations, some art and 16 statues were put away in storage so those have not gone up in flames.

I'm fighting back tears as I watch this. I have stood in front of that beautiful building and looked at it with awe. One just doesn't expect building of this importance and historical significance to disappear from our landscape. I pray that miraculously somehow it can be saved. And that no lives will be lost.

Was it open during the renovations? sorry for all the questions! No problem, ask away. Notre-Dame remained open (it was supposed to be a slow reno over 20 years). They evacuated people immediately so no casualties expected besides firemen if there are any. However, all the rest that was inside the building is likely lost now. Final bits of the majestic gothic roof have gone now. Just saw them go down.

In case anyone is interested as to why they're struggling to put it out: due to where the cathedral is located by the Seine, it is very hard for the firemen to properly circle the building to put it out.
The roof was known to be a "forest." It was an elaborate structure of wood. This has been its downfall, unfortuantely.

Fire update: the fire is descending into the building. They worry for the nave itself now. The fire is spreading to the wood framing that was typical of buildings back 1000-800 years ago (it took two centuries to complete).

This just takes my breath away and during Holy Week no less. With it being in the city center, are there other buildings in danger? Does the Cathedral take up many city blocks? I pray all emergency personnel and people in the neighborhoods are safe.

There are no words to describe this loss. It cannot be rebuilt, it will never be the same building no matter what they can save.
