I'm watching it live on the computer at work. Saw the spire ablaze and then collapse. Heart wrenching.

My daughter studied abroad a couple of years ago in Paris and fell in love the city and the people. I'm sure she is not aware of this happening yet. She'll be devastated. Sending good thoughts and prayers that no one is injured or worse.

I’m heartbroken. I can’t imagine how the people of France must feel right now.

Official confirmation that the entire wood frame is under threat now. Some of the wood is original and dates back to the 13th century making it very brittle, dry and prone to flames.
Right now seeing firemen up on the sides of the building trying to extinguish it at the centre. They are trying to limit the flames. Brave men. No major extra collapse expected right now.

It looks to me like they're starting to properly control the fire now that they can send firemen up right next to the collapsed roof. Fingers crossed!
My French heart is aching. As a literature graduate, it's even more painful to witness.

I was there in 1989, it's an awe-inspiring building and felt so sacred to be near. I'm not Catholic but I am Christian and was very moved by it.
It's so enormous and there are so many buildings packed tightly around it that I don't see much hope for preventing spreading. This could end up being a very big deal.
Incredibly heartbreaking!

My sister just flew into Paris yesterday with a school group and stood in front of Notre Dame this morning. Now she's watching it burn. So incredibly sad!

The irony of the scaffolding holding up. You can't write this kind of visual pathos.
Whatever was left inside the cathedral is gone, guys. Those flames are eating it all up.

My heart breaks watching that beautiful building burn. I think of all the events and tragedies it has stood through, and fire is bringing it down.

Some firemen are spraying the side of the building (thick stone walls) preventively, trying to cool it down as much as possible. There are bits of still hot charcoal on the ground, in the streets, from the collapsing of the roof.
I'm hoping they managed to evacuate some of the art before the fire completely took over. I'm just hoping they had a few precious minutes there after evacuating visitors to get some out.

. With it being in the city center, are there other buildings in danger? Does the Cathedral take up many city blocks? There are lots of buildings near it, the area is pretty built up. It's situated on an island in the middle of the Seine. The roads around it are pretty narrow and one side of it is virtually on the banks of the Seine. So a pretty difficult position for it to be at.

I'm hoping the front facade and towers will stand - and the flying buttresses.... I just can't fathom losing such a piece of history.

They cleared the streets to facilitate access for the firemen. They evacuated the closest buildings preventively. They are no longer evacuating but everything is closed down, no people allowed closer by. You're either nearby already and witnessing it or you're being shoved away from trying to access the island to make space for the fire trucks.

This is awful, what a tragedy for Paris. Hopefully, the fire service can get it under control as soon as possible.

French teacher here. I'm watching with my students and wondering what will be left. I've been there many times and each time it takes my breath away.
Chartres cathedral caught fire more than once, and it was rebuilt. I hope Paris will be able to do the same. There have been disagreements in the recent past over who should pay for necessary renovations - the Catholic church or the French government. I hope they will be able to work together to fix this piece of history.

The fire is now located at the heart of the cathedral where the remainders of the elaborate wood structure that collapsed are still burning. It's essentially a fire inside a big stone pot. The plan is now to save the stone exterior going by all the spraying of the façade that is happening. I'm guessing there isn't much you can do for the centuries old wood that is still on fire in the middle of the building.

I can remember just standing inside and looking at all the carvings and being in awe of those... so amazing... and the windows and Stations of the Cross.. so much in there. It will definitely be a memory for me, my daughter and son.. can't believe I actually got to see this Church before now...
