Updates from today: 4. The Prime Minister announced an international contest for the rebuild plans. There is talk now of foregoing this to not waste precious time. Yadda yadda. The French will French. I expect some more public arguing to happen over this. ). This WILL slow the process down. Guaranteed.

Thanks once again!!! Do you know what the status is of some of the stained glass? Somewhere I read that some of it wouldn't be able to be saved?? Some of the stained glass has been lost, indeed. The stained glass in the rose windows has survived. The theory is that the stone casing they are housed in helped to preserve them through the fire and high temperatures. We don't currently have an exact list of which stained glass survived, which didn't. This is likely due to the fact that the structure is not sound so all efforts right now go to keeping the walls up (and, obviously, it isn't safe enough to allow stained glass specialists in for in-depth inventory and analysis). ETA: Some of the stained glass was actually rather recent. An anterior renovation had taken away loads of coloured stained glass to let light in through clear glass. This was eventually restored back. Let me go check what the Chief Architect explained... ETA2: Alright, got it. The only medieval stained glass (some from the 13th century, some from the 14th, some from the 15th) at Notre-Dame is for the rose windows and two smaller ones (Adam and Eve and the butcher). As explained here (in French). The stained glass windows from the gallery were made by Viollet-le-Duc during the renovations of the 19th century (prompted by Victor Hugo's novel). In the 18th century, the Notre-Dame canons (of the priest kind) complained they lacked light and broke all the stained glass (except those mentioned above) for clear glass. Viollet-le-Duc restored these windows back to their original state (no modernisations).

Yellow vests upset about the billion pledged for Notre Dame but not for other pressing needs... ""I would like us to get back to reality," said Ingrid Levavasseur, one of the informal leaders of the movement, speaking on French BFM TV last week. Levavasseur said it was important to criticise "the inertia of large companies and [billionaires] in the face of social misery as they display their ability to raise a crazy amount of money in a single night for Notre Dame". "If they are able to give tens of millions to rebuild Notre Dame, then they should stop telling us that there is no money to counter social inequality," Philippe Martinez, head of France's CGT workers union, told French radio last week. The sentiment was reflected on the streets of Paris on Saturday. "Billions should also be given to the poor, to help the environment, to promote biodiversity," said Redde holding a sign that read, "Millions for Notre Dame - and what about the poor?"" www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/04/notre-dame-fire-pledges-inflame-yellow-vest-protesters-190420171251402.html

Resurrecting this one after 2 years to share a fascinating videos about the discoveries they're making in Notre-Dame as they begin restructing such as the old metal "staple" technique for the core masonry used probably in a different manner than the ancient Greeks and Romans did since cathedrals rely on balance first and foremost. This short documentary explores how materials are being analysed to uncover how the cathedral was actually built originally. Unfortunately, the video is in French without English subtitles.

It’s so interesting! This site is in English and has some interesting articles. I think it’s the one that I have bookmarked, but I need to check my Mac.

Thanks for that! Very interesting. I went to YouTube to watch it and I put the captioning on. That helped me because the written words reinforced what I was hearing.

Reviving this thread because the project to transform the outside of the cathedral has been chosen and revealed. Belgian architect and landscape designer Bas Smet will be leading the winning team to create a much greener and romantic forecourt that is adapted to the challenges of climate change with many trees to create shade for the tourists during summer. This climate shelter allows to not only multiply the amount of visitors outside (with a positive environmental impact) but also to create an ascending view of the cathedral as used to be the case 800 years ago.
The underground parking will disappear and make place for an inside promenade that will include the new access to the crypt.
Works begin in 2024 and will last 3 years. So, if you plan on visiting Paris 5+ years from now, this is how you'll be experiencing Notre-Dame...

I love the idea of the anticipation of walking through the park and catching glimpses of the cathedral through the trees, and then suddenly there are no more trees and you see the cathedral in all its glory.

Happy to read the positive response to the future transformation. Ultimately, it has to be a fit for both the Parisians living near the site and the tourists. It all feels very organic and in tune with the city while catering to the daily practicalities of being an internationally reknown historical monument. The architect in question has an interesting TED talk on what a landscape is and how you can intervene to turn land into a landscape. I'm very well, thank you. 😊 Summer has taken over life here for over a month now and I'm just enjoying the weather, rosé and chill vibes (while cursing the surprising amount of nights where our apartment doesn't drop below 30°C, ugh, this climate change is making city life sans AC rough). How are things up north? Enjoying nice weather too?

We have had some great weather although it's a bit cooler and cloudier this week. I'm still enjoying the rose though Rosé 4ever. It's always hot and sunny somewhere in the world, right? You got a summer vacay planned, gar? I'm trying to convince my stepdad to go golfing in Scotland so my mother can enjoy the Scottish landscapes she loves and buy all the Scottish yarn to knit us sweaters... He mumbled something about it being autumn weather in the middle of summer "up there". I've not given up. I was a little bit scared when I saw this thread. NOT AGAIN! I was a bit busy today hearing how Trump choked a secret service agent and said Pence deserved to be hung. Haha, I know the world is a little mad right now but no, no, it's not been reduced to glowing embers! Restauration is going well although they're behind the initial schedule due to lead issues + Covid-19. They've even made a few archeological discoveries including a lead sarcophagus. Here is an update on how things are going:

sleepingbooty, he’s right! Scotland is beautiful and full of wonderful scenery and culture but weather is not it’s selling point 😊 We are hoping to go to Mauritius later in the year (a belated 30th anniversary celebration from 2020) but nothing booked as yet. So many strikes/staff shortages/airport delays at the moment so we’ll bide our time. You?

I love the trees. It makes sense—one of the great things about walking along the Seine in the summer are the trees. We need more shade in our cities. Plus it will help on those days when it’s just raining lightly.
The last time we walked by there was in January. It doesn’t look like much has been done (although of course a lot has been done). It’s just not very visible from the street. I never knew there was parking there!
