I'd appreciate hearing your experiences / outcomes with your pet's bleeding ulcer. If you don't want to read my long, DESCRIPTIVE story, please skip it and just tell me about your pet and what happened.....thank you! ----------------------------------------------------------- Update 4/23 .....Our precious girl is FINE and came home 2 days later! They'll re-check her total blood volume in a few days. She's now taking Carafate every 6-8 hours, and Omeprazole every 12 hrs. Eating, drinking, playing jussst like she always has. OP: We weren't home when it happend, but Thursday (April 18) at 5:00, DH came home to find Sophie sleeping peacefully and in NO distress, but had vomited a VERY LARGE amount of red blood. ANNND, there was large amount of tar-colored (dark black) diarrhea allll over the floor in another room. DH rushed to our local vet where I met them there soon after, and....oh my goodnesshhh....seeing the blood on her paws and legs and seeing her sweet face jusssst killed me. Our PAWsome vet said that in his 30 years of practice, he has NEVER seen that large of an amount of red blood vomited. But as I said, she APPEARED okay----her gums were pink, she was breathing fine, etc., except for seeming a little tired. Also, as we waited in the vet waiting room, she did NOT want to interact with the other doggies or hoomans like she ALWAYS does. Our regular vet wanted us to take her to the emergency hospital where she stayed two nights and got IV fluids, acid reducers, and other meds I won't know until we pick her up later. Doc said she is FINE, and we're going to wait and see. They all agree that it is PROBABLY from the iburofen **( oops....Edited later to say it's carprofen---made for dogs! ---I should NOT have called it Ibuprofen!) she takes twice daily for her horri-bull arthritis. ---she and her brother also take other arthritis meds, and we do realize it's always a risk. The doc from the emergency vet did mention that it COULD be cancer, but we're not gonna go there....yet.... Today (Friday) the critical care vet said she's doing well after a night of IV fluids and other meds. No more vomiting or diarrhea, and tolerated breakfast well. Her hematocrit (total blood volume) was 25 (a bit low), but she's not concerned about it. She and our regular vets are ALMOST sure this was due to the NSAIDs. BUT, to get a more accurate diagnosis, we discussed endoscopy, another ultrasound, and a (possible) Cortisol test which shows if she may have Addison's disease, which (I had no idea!) can also cause bloody vomit and diarrhea. Later in the afternoon, she calls to tell me Sophie's hematocrit has now dropped to 20 ( 5 points lower than 8 hours previous), which wasn't what she expected, but still, she's not overly concerned. We talked about bringing her home and see how she does in the next week. Obviously, we plan to watch her VERY closely! Wellll....DH felt it'd be better to leave her there one more night, and he also said yes to a repeat ultrasound, which was inconclusive. In the morning, they'll check her hematocrit again and I'm praying it won't be even lower than 20! Vet also mentioned that with the high rate of IV fluids she was on all night, that can give a "high FALSE" reading of red blood cells, and that her blood volume MIGHT be lower than 20. Ugh... Sooo, we'll see what happens in the morning....we miss herrrr !!! She just had her EIGHT birthday pawty on April 3rd ....

I have not but are you on Facebook>?? I have gotten great info from a group dedicated to Labs. Maybe there's one specific to your breed? It would make sense it's the meds.

Our baby is home now and doing well !!! She's on the meds Carafate and Omperozole (sp?) They'll check her hematocrit in a week to see if her total blood volume is sufficient. mnmloveli ....Thank you Prayers are always appreciated! I've been doing a lot of that lately! christine58 ---Yes, I'm on facebook bulldog groups and another verrrry informative, busy website just for bulldog owners. One of my facebook groups is the bulldog rescue we've fostered / adopted from, and several of the hoomans who run the rescue know A LOT about health issues. BUT---as unbelieva-bull as this is to me, no one (so far) has experienced this... (I say "so far" because obviously, not EVERYbully has read my post yet on the facebook group or the very busy bulldog website). On the website, I HAVE gotten lots of great advice and info, but just like facebook---nobully's doggies have had the bloody vomit or diarrhea. Sooo, aside from my facebook groups, the busy bulldog website, I'm also wondering if anybully here has a pet that's experienced it. Oh, and I'm pretty sure I've told you before.....but your doggie is SOOO cute! I've always LOVED labs and retrievers!!!

No real advice, but I’ve always thought/heard ibuprofen was a big no-no for dogs? Our last lab had similar problems at the end and the vet mentioned it could be an ulcer. But he spiraled down so fast and he was so old that there was nothing that could be done. I hope your pup has a better outcome.

crazy4scraps ....I'm sooo very sorry about your doggie! We will no longer give either of our doggies the "Vetprofen" they were both taking, or ANY NSAID !!! They're still getting their usual doses of Gabapentin and Tramadol (which, of course---carry their own risks---ugh!) but we're very concerned that without having something like an NSAID for the inflammation, they might be hurting a lot more. We're gonna discuss all that with their vet on Thurs---he thinks a med called Galliprant might be better---no stomach issues like NSAIDS. We give both babies massages that ( we assume and hope!) eases their joint pain. I'd also like to start taking them for accupuncture, annnnd, we already tried CBD oil with Sophie and it didn't seem to help, BUT, we need to try again for BOTH of our doggies, because their arthritis is BAD! I tend to avoid / be verrry skeptical about trendy/ overly-hyped things like CBD, and HATE it when people believe that something like CBD can be a cure-all for everrrything..... HOWEVERRR----we have some very trusted, dog-loving friends whose elderly, arthritic doggies have improved SIGNIFICANTLY from CBD ! One of our friends was even considering euthanizing their 10-year-old sweetie that couldn't even get up from the floor anymore, much less walk. But now, he is walking and playing like a puppy DH has been working very hard on building Meaty an ersatz "wheelchair", and it's SO cool !!! ANd even though they both NEED to walk (obviously), since it can't be for long periods of time anymore, we'll start using a stroller with Sophie. She's been doing GREAT since last Thursday's vomiting and diarrhea, and 2 nights in the hospital on IV fluids and other meds, thank God! This Thursday will be a week since she lost SO MUCH blood, so our vet will re-check her CBC to see if her total blood volume is back to normal.

Oops, i said some incorrect info above----I THOUGHT our vet said Galliprant was NOT an actual NSAID, but it is. Mind you, I was extreeemely worried during this conversation last week, so I missed some info. BUT, I'm almost positive he said that Galliprant does NOT h ave the higher RISK of ulcer / GI bleeds.... I've had many hoomans asking me why they were Rx'd Ibuprofen---I was using that term (and/or calling it "doggie Motrin/ Advil) so it would be easy to understand.....I assumed the DOGGIE version of "Ibuprofen" was the same as the hooman version, but I was wrong! The active drug in Rimadyl, carprofen, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that belongs to the same class ibuprofen, naproxen, and ketoprofen. However, unlike aspirin and ibuprofen, Rimadyl is FDA-approved for use in dogs. This medication is the number one NSAID prescribed to treat canine pain... They were taking Carprofen, and before that, the ones before that were Vetprofen ( I assume that was just a cutsie brand name....who knows? My mind is overwhelmmmmed with conflicting info!) Other NSAIDs that are FDA-approved for use in dogs include deracoxib (Deramaxx), carprofen (Rimadyl, Novocox, Carprieve, Quellin, Carprofen), meloxicam (Metacam, Loxicom, Orocam, Meloxidyl, Meloxicam), and firocoxib (Previcox).Ugh..... ALL I know for sure is that 2 vets that we love and trust have ASSURED us that neither of our very arthritic, elderly, limping babies are SUFFERING, because, as I told them----IF, even with all the meds they are on, IF they are suffering, it's time to "escort them to the Rainbow Bridge" as it were.

I don’t have experience with what you’re going through, but I did want to ask if you’ve heard of Yunnan Baiyao? I mentioned in a thread earlier today about all the random stuff I learn about from the dog community on Instagram, and this is another thing I had never even heard of but have now written down “just in case.” It’s a Chinese (herbal, I think??) medicine that’s supposed to help with bleeding disorders in animals (and people). It can help with bleeding cancers, bleeding ulcers, bleeding from injuries or after surgery. I have no idea if this would help your pup, but it might be worth looking into. Glad that sweet Sophie is doing so much better!
