…in October?? I don't always make Halloween costumes, but I do enjoy it and I try to go homemade when possible. DS wants to be Minecraft Steve so I scooped a bunch of boxes from the recycling and have been cutting them down and hot glueing them together. We have a big pixelated paint job ahead of us. DD is going as Elsa (along with everyone else in her demographic) and her costume was purchased but we are glittering up a pair of thrift-store shoes for her. I am going as Anna and I got my top and vest from a thrift store, sewed on some gold trim and felt flowers, and I sewed my own skirt. My house is covered in cardboard shreds, glitter, fabric and thread. And God help me if I forget to shut the door to the office one night, because I shudder to think what might happen to any of it if the cats are left alone unsupervised...

lol.. mine is about to. DH and I are going as Barbie and ken, which means I need to make 2 giant pink Barbie boxes. the hunt starts tomorrow at work for suitable cardboard. last year my oldest was a lego man, and that required box cutting, foamboard and spraypaint and my house looked a lot like yours- but it was the living room, not an office!

What fantastic memories your kids will have of fabulous costumes. (THEY won't remember the mess... and likely you won't either if you delete the evidence)

I'm right there with you concerning my sewing room. I just finished up a bunch of 18" doll clothes for a festival, now I need to restore my sewing room to its original order. Seems that I can't create without making a mess. Good luck with keeping that door closed and keeping the cats out.

Yes!!! I love making Halloween costumes. I start asking my kids what they want to be at the end to August! Last year my DS wanted to be Steve from Minecraft, so I made him the pixelated head. It took me ages and it turned out awesome. He tried it on, said it was uncomfortable and decided not to wear it for Halloween. He ended up wearing his karate suit instead. This year my DD15 is dressing up as the character 'Miranda Sings' with a bunch of her friends from school. They all want to buy the official red sweatpants from the website for $30, despite the fact that I have a roll of red fleece in my sewing room and could make a pair for nothing!

No, no your home isn't tallgirl - I took this one a few minutes ago - I am in the process of making two costumes, this is the larger of the two and it is taking over our home - and as you can see it is on our kitchen peninsula, because we live in 488 sq ft with no garage:

My son was Steve for Halloween 2 years ago. I made him the cardboard head (found a pattern on a blog and had it printed at Kinkos- so no painting here). He hated it too. He did wear it out, but ended up using it to put his candy in instead
Right now I am mid-minion for my daughter. Luckily it's not too complicated- just do pipe cleaner hair on a stocking cap and ironing on a logo on her shirt.
No idea what my son will be. He's going to a Halloween party but has no idea if it's dress up or not. He's 14, it could go either way.

That's so awesome that you're making your kids' costumes.
When I was a kid, my mother would go all out making our costumes and all 3 of us have wonderful memories of halloween and those costumes. Because of that, I did the same thing with my kids' costumes and they, as adults now, still talk about how much they loved the costumes I made them.
It's so worth it for the extra good memories they have created in my family.

Ha! My craftroom looks like that year round. I only get a chance to go in and organize it in the summer. It does not last long

mine doesn't look like that yet, but it will starting tomorrow. my daughter is coming to sew her costume and need to start work on the props for decorating the house. We are doing a Wizard of Oz theme. I have shoes to spray paint and glitter, signs to make and paper poppies to get started on and monkey to make fly.

Ha ha, my studio looks worse than that and I've been done with DD's costume for a week! We never had store bought costumes. Every once in a while our mom would pop for some of those crappy plastic masks with the too small eyeholes, LOL. I remember going as Raggedy Ann one year and the horribly hot yarn hair wig that my mom made for me. She taught me to sew when I was very young, and I had a knack for designing and making costumes even back then. I sewed costumes for myself and my little brother when we were younger. Then when I was about 13-14 my older sister roped me into designing and making costumes for her and her husband so they could win costume contests at the bar (they are 10 years older than I am). I did some for her kids over the years. DH loves Halloween too but until last year we hadn't dressed up for years. We were all pirates since we had the costumes already from when we went on a Disney cruise earlier in the year. Those were bought (for the cruise) because we kind of decided to do it at the last minute, and we knew we could wear them again for Halloween. Now that DD is old enough to have an opinion on what she wants to be, Halloweens are going to be a lot crazier from here on out. Her Elsa dress is done but now I want to make her a cape so she has something warm to wear over it. She will have Buddy Bear (her preschool's teddy bear version of Flat Stanley) for Halloween this year so it would be kind of fun to make Buddy an Olaf costume to wear for the big weekend to go along with the theme. Over the top, I know, but so fun!

Mine will look like that in about another week. Awesome Steve! I did a Herobrine head a few years ago for DD, and did all the individual tiles for the pixelated look. This year I'll be doing a Weeping Angel, a Homestuck character, and some anime character I'm not yet familiar with, but I'm sure I will be soon. So mainly just sewing and makeup this year .

I have a rule with my kids that I'm only in charge of their costume until they're 12 and then they have to take over from there. My youngest is the only one left who's under 12 so I only have one costume left. I even got that almost completely done a few weeks ago because she wanted it for one of the Homecoming dress up days (the other schools participate too.)
Younger son wants a Dalek costume. He also is 12 and is charge of it himself. This is going to be interesting.

My house is a disaster every October and has been for 30 years, lol! I used to make costumes and bags every year for our 6 children, now I make the FIRST costume for the grandkids and bags for all who still want to T&T. I'm currently making a princess dress for my 1 month old granddaughter, 2 tombstome bags for the two GKs that are going to go as zombies, a Superman bag for another one and the other 3 haven't decided what they're going to be. One year I made a full-body Spongebob costume for my DS. I had felt, foam and hot glue in every nook and cranny of my house. Took me until almost Thanksgiving to rid the house and garage of all the costume-making evidence! I love it, though. This time of year and all the creative opportunities...absolutely love it. L

Did you buy the pre-made Steve head and plan to add the body? Or did you make your own Steve head, too? The body looks awesome so far.

Did you buy the pre-made Steve head and plan to add the body? Or did you make your own Steve head, too? The body looks awesome so far. We started making our own Steve head but when we found the one you can buy, we jumped on it. We're just doing the body and arms ourselves now. The reviews for the purchased Steve head indicate that it can hold up to some rain, which I found reassuring. In the back of my mind I'm picturing poor DS as a soggy mess if it rains on Halloween. At least now his face will look good!

Not this year, but it has before. My boys did Steve and herobrine last year. This year, one decided to reuse his mask and go as enderman. All we did was paint it black and redid the eyes. He looks pretty good. I also had to take an adult sized costume and make it fit my very small 12 yr old.

Our house looks like that most of the year, it seems I live in a house full of Cosplayers lol. DD is currently working on a Lara Croft outfit, with homemade bow and arrow, and climbing axe. Last year she was Rainbow Dash My Little Pony. DH has been a minion. All 6 ft 4 of him lol. DS was Psycho from Borderlands. They all dressed up to go to MegaCon in Orlando in March. I seem to be getting sucked in myself now, I have a Black Widow costume on the go for MegaCon 2015

I'm not making costumes and my house still looks like that. I've got 'give aways' by the entry door and things that have been brought from our other house all over the living room.

I make a mess every day I work on arts/crafts projects. It's truly a part of my creative process. It's also why in the next house, my studio space WILL have a door. So I can close it and hide the mess.
