My kids (20 & 21) told me I was giving away their childhood tonight. I'm putting the family room back together after painting a couple walls and decided to take advantage of everything being pulled out to go through the rarely touched DVD and VHS collection. Before they had a chance to look I'd tossed all the VHS tapes into the donate pile. We haven't even had a VHS player for a few years, but it still broke their hearts to see Snow Dogs and The Swan Princess about to head out the door. I've been listening to them for the last hour reminiscing over favorites. They are doing a little Marie Kondo style decision making and so far are prepared to donate all Harry Potter and Star Wars but need to keep Master of Disguise, Freaky Friday, Sky High, The Incredibles and all of The Simpsons for a little while longer. I'm curious to see what else makes the cut. FTR, they rarely watch a DVD these days preferring to stream whatever they want to watch. What movies still bring your kids joy?

Before you toss the Disney VHS, check the value on them. Some of the Disney VHS are worth a lot of money.

We still have a bunch but let tons go. Every once in a while I have DS who is still at home go through and tell me what he still "has to" save and then the donate pile gets photographed and pics sent to DD to see if any are needed to be saved according to them. Funny thing is, as they dwindle down, some going to DD's apartment etc the one (series) I think they will never get the courage to ditch is ..... The Land Before Time movies. yep, yep, yep! I think those are here to stay. (or move on to their places)

Before you toss the Disney VHS, check the value on them. Some of the Disney VHS are worth a lot of money. I second that, especially if they are in those original oversized white cases with the first version of the poster art on the cover. Particularly The Little Mermaid.

I’ve had to go through this process of whittling down the DVD collection several times because they couldn’t bear the thought of giving away these precious movies they haven’t watched in years and could probably stream any time they wanted.

I donated all the VHS tapes about 7 years ago to the local children's hospital (when they still accepted VHS tapes). Last year I pulled out the entire DVD collection and went through them with DD and DH. We got rid of 2 grocery sacks full! The only one that she really had to keep was Down Periscope. Silliest movie ever but still sends her into fits of laughter. I'm pretty sure she uses it as a screening tool with guys she dates! She let go of DVD's much easier than DH did. Before you toss the Disney VHS, check the value on them. Some of the Disney VHS are worth a lot of money. I second that, especially if they are in those original oversized white cases with the first version of the poster art on the cover. Particularly The Little Mermaid. This has turned into one of those urban legends that pops up all the time on the eBay sellers boards I'm on. Most Disney VHS tapes aren't worth very much, if you can even sell them. The only Disney VHS that sell for decent money will be the factory sealed ones in mint condition. Doing a quick search on eBay for Little Mermaid in Completed Items will shows 1,567 sales ended, with only 410 sales. Most of those are under $10, and many are included in lots of multiple tapes. Around here many thrift stores won't even accept donations of VHS tapes any longer.

My kids aren't into old movies, but they would have a similar response if I tried to get rid of their legos! LOL

I feel exactly the same way. It’s hard!
I’ve been cleaning closets the past few weeeks. DS is moving into his own apartment and we are moving overseas. I told DH that I feel like we are dismantling their childhoods. DD still played with dolls when we moved here 8 years ago. We purged a lot a few years ago, so the stuff that is left were the things they really played with and cared about. It’s hard!

The 2nd release awhile back (probably 5ish years ago) was selling for a good amount if still in the packaging. It came with a necklace or bracelet. Song of the South VHS goes for a fair amount too.

I’m still stuck back on “giving away Harry Potter and Star Wars movies.” Does not compute.

Somebody here still has a vcr. Their child like to stop and rewind movies?
Maybe they would like your tapes?

Before you toss the Disney VHS, check the value on them. Some of the Disney VHS are worth a lot of money. Only if you can find a place that will take them for what they’re worth. I’ve never been able to find a place that will actually pay what they are worth. But, mine are watched. Thats the reason I bought them.

I recently redecorated our kids' bathroom. Got rid of the cutesy penguin themed accessories and shower curtain.
DS19 proclaimed it was the death of his childhood.

My adult children still mourn the loss of their beloved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon VHS tapes that my Grandma bought them at a swapmeet. They also miss the VHS tape of Fern Gully. They have Fern Gully on DVD but for some reason they say it just isn't the same without the previews of some other movie that were on the VHS tape. The small things kids remember from their childhood is funny.

Ds18 is having trouble letting go of Thomas the Tank Engine videos. We sold our VHS tapes for something like $10 each. But DS kept his favorite one. The kids only got 30 minutes of screen time when they were little and 9 times out of 10, DS would pick Thomas.

We haven't had broadcast TV for his whole life. In the morning he was allowed to watch a tape. On weekends, I let him watch a movie. He now realises that, like his parents, he will never get picked to play Trivial Pursuit. Lol. We have no clue when it comes to that game. So much is based on TV trivia.

There probably isn't a market anymore. This was about 10 years ago. I was taking some items into a community children's consignment sale and the owner of the sale saw some of my other Thomas items. She offered me big bucks for all of it on the spot and then told me that she would take anything else that I was willing to give up. (But we still kept all of the trains!)
