We'll be there on Sunday, May 12 to tour.
If you've been, do you have suggestions, tips?
Is it necessary to buy tickets before hand?
Thanks for any info!

I highly recommend the Guided Tour by Car with a Licensed Battlefield Tour Guide. The guide will drive your car around the park and Gettysburg while giving a personalized tour. We did this when we were there 3 years ago and it was great. The guide was so nice and knew so many little things/details that you won't get from simply getting the audio tour or probably from the bus tour either. He was able to specialize it a little for our boys (8 & 11 at the time), but also quickly realized he didn't need to "dumb" it down for our 11 year who loves history & had read some books about Gettysburg and the Civil War.
I'm not sure what the cost is now (when we signed up we could still do it online, but now you have to call to make a reservation.) The gettysburgfoundation.org website has lots of information about some of the available tours.
There's no cost to visit, but there is a film, cyclorama, and museum in the main building that cost extra. If you aren't that familiar with the battle then I would recommend doing that before exploring the grounds. It was a 3 day battle spread all over the city and so much of it has been well preserved.

we just went with my son's Boy Scout troop. We didn;t do the audio tour but I really wish we had. It's very hard for me to wrap my head around battles!

We were there last summer - did the History Nerds tour, and it was fantastic. We drove through the next day ourselves so my son could get out and explore the areas he was most interested in. The next time we go we'll do the Guided Tour by Car mentioned above.
The Jennie Wade house was very interesting. The Rupp House was pretty good. Best of all, I think, was the Seminary Ridge Museum. Absolutely wonderful. We loved having lunch at the Dobbin House. There's so much to see - we were there for three days and want to go back again soon!
Have fun!

If you have not been to a civil war site before, I will tell you, I am totally overwelhmed with the spirit of sorrow and grief when I have visited them. I'm not normally an over the top emotional person and I'm sure not everyone has that reaction, but dh and I both do. We have agreed that we are not up for that kind of emotional experience any more.

I'm with you there. It was definitely an experience I'm glad I had, but it took me about a week to get over the awful feeling that being there gave me. Very sobering. Maybe our tour guide was too good, but the thought of all the suffering, all the grief, all the death of humans and horses. It was almost too much.

We loved going to Gettysburg! So much history. Definitely get a guided car tour, or bus tour. So worth it. We had a bus load from MN, so they geared a lot of the tour towards the big MN aspect of the fight. Who would have thought a MN division at this war? We would love to go again.

As has been suggested, do the car tour with the guide. Then later that day or the next day drive thru the park yourself and get out and explore on your own. It helps getting the details from the guide then going back on your own and taking more time to look at specific things.
