Now if I haven't already read the book in the past, I'll see the movie first. That way I get the version of the story the director/actors etc want to tell. Then I read the book to fill in the gaps and create my own version in my head. This way I enjoy the movie for what it is and I'm not disappointed because it didn't match up to what was in my head. That's a great way to look at it. I don't have a hard and fast rule. I usually enjoy the book more than the movie, because as pjaye mentioned, in a movie they are trying to fit a 20 hour book into a 2 hour movie, and some things are going to be glossed over. With Big Little Lies I saw the TV show first and then read the book. I liked them equally. I can imagine if I'd read the book first I would possibly have a hard time with the TV show, because I would already have had a vision of the characters and location in my head. But having read the book second, I visualised the characters as the actors who played them. I tell you one thing that's messing with my head a bit..... One of my favourite authors is Michael Connelly, and I absolutely love his Harry Bosch books. I also love the TV show Bosch. And even though Titus Welliver looks nothing like the Harry Bosch I've had in my mind for years (he's way younger for starters) I still think Titus is the PERFECT choice to play Bosch. But when I read the books now, my mind flits between my version of Harry and the TV version of Harry. It's a bit disconcerting. And let's not even start on that ridiculous little pip squeak Tom Cruise, and the travesty that he is playing another of my favourite book characters, Jack Reacher. I refused point blank to watch the movies.

Book first, but I like some distance between reading the book and watching the movie. If I watch the movie right after finishing the book it makes it where it’s impossible to enjoy the movie. If I wait a bit to see the movie, I forget the more minor details and then they don’t annoy me when the movie changes small things.

I generally have read the book first, but don’t have a rule that I must read it before seeing the movie. Occasionally, I will learn that a movie is based on a book only after seeing the movie. At that point, I often go back and read the book. In most cases, the book is still better or at least gives me more insight. The only movies based on books, and I use the term loosely, that I won’t read are all the superhero ones. I love the spectacle of the Marvel movies without having any desire to read years’ worth of comics!

Book first. Always. I only watch the movie first if I plan to skip the book. Speaking of which, I can't wait for The Goldfinch movie. Looks amazing. Lisa This is one that I think the movie may actually be way better than the book. I did NOT enjoy the book. I found it rambling and badly in need of an editor. But the movie may tighten a lot up!

Read the book. I won’t let my kids watch movies until they read the book, either. Do not watch Harry Potter before you read Harry Potter. I believe there are police tasked with enforcing this.

When you read a book ~ you are making your own little, private movie.

The book first. Always. Two of my favourite books ever have been made into abysmal films, and I stopped watching them before they could sully my love of the books. I don’t watch a lot of films, but I did see Crazy Rich Asians last week and actually enjoyed it more than the book.

I have generally read the book first, mostly because the book has been out before the movie is made. There are some series (LOTR is one) where I enjoyed the movies, but haven't read the books and have no intention to do so. Sometimes, I see the movie frst, as I don't know it is a book adaptation. There is one movie that my sister sent me last year while I was sick, and I watched it as I had plenty of time. I found out whenI was recently back home that is was a book adaptation, so I hunted down the book and intend to read it soon. I am hoping it will help the film make more sense!

I prefer to read first.
However, 99% of the time, I will not go see a movie made about a book I read because the film maker changes the story so much that it is ruined for me.

I don't have a rule about it one way or the other. Sometimes, I don't realize a movie is based on a book and I might go back and read the book. Other times, I am curious about the differences.
If a movie comes out based on a book I really enjoyed, I'll see it. Even if it's different, I can still enjoy the movie for what it is.

Book first! I almost never read a book that if I've already seen the movie.

Since the book is almost always better than the movie, I often find if I read it first I don’t enjoy the movie as much because I am making negative comparisons. That’s the same reason I stopped rereading books right before their movie counterpart is about to be released. However, because the book adds so much depth, I can see the movie then read the book and appreciate them both more.

It doesn't matter to me. I almost think it would be better to watch the movie first then it wouldn't be as disappointing. Books are 90% better most of the time.

Usually book first. Though, I went to see The Help without any idea what it was about. Thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Bought the book after, as the book is always better. I love, love, love The Hobbit in book form. The movies were dreadful. Jackson did so well with the LOTR movies. How did he screw the Hobbit up so badly. I haven’t watched it beyond the first go round. Actually, I don’t think I even bothered with the final movie.

Movies don't ruin the books for me; sometimes they're even better (See: Jaws). They're different art forms with different ways of being taken in; they're never going to be the same thing and shouldn't be judged as such.

It depends. Some stories I want to read them first. Other stories I will see the movie first and then read the book if the story line really knocks my socks off.
