I am still in somewhat of the denial phase, hoping that she has been diagnosed incorrectly (as I'm a scientist and need all the data), but she's at one of the best facilities, Barnes Siteman Cancer center in St. Louis. She had her port put in today to receive carboplatin and paclitaxel, since it has metastasized to several lymph nodes and 3 spots on bone. No cure, but hoping to extend her life for several years. Ironically, my DH's research for new cancer drugs uses these same chemo agents as some of his controls in his studies. Oh, how I wish we can get his drug in humans. We're writing for a SBIR (Small business grant) to get his company, Vona Oncology, moving forward. All of my family will visit her in a couple of weeks to celebrate her 73rd birthday and retirement. Lately, I've run out of tears and not sure what to do from afar (I'm in Colorado). Really sad at times. I've been making tons of petite houses from Papertrey Ink for distraction. Thanks for listening...

I’m so sorry. I had 4 rounds of Paclitaxel and it is no fun. I hope it does the job, however, and kills those cancer cells in your mom. (((Hug))) When I went through chemo for breast cancer last summer, I found it interesting that even with all the research that has been conducted, the three drugs they gave me were all 15+ years old. Paclitaxel, for example, was approved for medical use 26 years ago. I hope that your husband’s drug works and is approved.

I am so sorry. I understand the tears - who knew we had so many?!
I am happy to hear your mom is at a major cancer center. That is vital for receiving the best treatment.
I hope your mom does well. Hugs to you.

Ugh, cancer fucking sucks. I'm so sorry.
You said it came up in her parotid gland. What kind of cancer is it?
My cancer also started in my parotid gland, and metastasized into my lymphs, bone and blood. Mine turned out to be Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. I also don't get to hear the words cure, but coming up next month I've been in remission for 16 years.
I will keep your mother in my thoughts and wish her the best medical team out there.

She is getting more tests, but the initial biopsy at the gland and bone came up as undifferentiated carcinoma. I think more tests are needed. Thanks for this information and glad you're in remission.

She is getting more tests, but the initial biopsy at the gland and bone came up as undifferentiated carcinoma. I think more tests are needed. Thanks for this information and glad you're in remission. They wouldn’t be starting her on a chemo regimen if they didn’t know what type of cancer they were dealing with, since different cancers respond to different drugs. “Undifferentiated Carcinoma” is a group of salivary gland cancers - unfortunately, not with great prognoses. Here is a link that discusses salivary gland cancers and undifferentiated carcinomas are discussed about halfway down: www.cancer.org/cancer/salivary-gland-cancer/about/what-is-salivary-gland-cancer.htmlI am sorry that you both are going through this. She will probably lose her hair due to the Paclitaxel. The good news is that it will take a couple of weeks after chemo starts, so you still have time to order her a couple of head covers. This is the website that my cancer center printed out drug info from - I found it extremely helpful for checking on side effects and figuring out when my white blood cell counts would be at their lowest: chemocare.com/default.aspx
