I have a samsung galaxy cell phone, and my phone is pretty old so I am thinking of getting a new phone.
The things that are most important for me in a phone are:
1. pictures/videos - my kids have iphones and their pictures are really good
2. internet use - facebook, etc.
3. texting, phone calls
So I need something very easy to use! I am clueless when it comes to phones! I wonder if they have classes for technology/cell phone challenged people?

I switched about 3-4 years ago. I like how it operates, but I think my DH's Samsung takes better pictures. One annoying thing about the iphone is it's lack of operation with my 10 year old uconnect in my van. I find the Samsung operates faster, but who knows.

I had a Sasmsung Neo 5 ( like 5 years old). I went in to replace it last week. I really thought I was getting an iPhone 8 but I left with a google pixel 3a.
The pictures I have taken are AWESOME, much much better than my ds's iPhone 7
I use the internet, facebook, twitter Instagram etc, nothing different from the Samsung.
Texting and calling are super easy and no different that the Samsung. I ma able to make a group text and send pictures to iPhone users I was not able to do that with my old Samsung.
What I love about the pixel
the lock screen the finger print security feature that is on the back of the phone
did I mention the awesome pictures
the price I got it free with a 2 yr contract, the iPhone XR was going to cost me $349 with the same contract.
A newer iPhone may be great and have lots of features that I am not even aware of but value for money I am very happy with my pixel

I switched from a Samsung Galaxy Note to an iPhone in May.
I liked the parental controls available on iPhones and I don’t regret switching at all! The photos are great (way less distortion and crisper images, plus Portrait Mode is really nice), and I think it’s easier to use than my Samsung. I say make the switch!

You are right about AppleCare. It is awesome! I haven’t used it on my phone yet but have on the iPad and laptop when I had one. They are so patient.

Thanks for the great tips! One thing I should have added about my samsung pictures is that they are always blurry! I don't know if others have that problem with a samsung? If they are taken outdoors on a sunny day, they are great. Inside I can never get the camera to focus.

I started with an Android phone and then switched to an iPhone because they were so popular...I lasted 8 months and switched back to a Samsung. That was 5 years ago and I'll never go back to Apple. It may get better now they are going to ditch iTunes but always having to go through that to put music etc on your phone was a huge PITA to me. I find Android much easier and faster to use.

If they are taken outdoors on a sunny day, they are great. Inside I can never get the camera to focus. My pixel takes amazing "dark" photos. "Night sight" is awesome! Even with that you need to "find your light". It makes such a difference in all photos inside and out to be intentional about where your light is coming from and hitting your subject.

I have only had iPhones (well and a blackberry), so I have no basis for comparison. 😉. I currently have an 8+ with 256 gig memory because I have a *slight* photo obsession. 😂
I think the operating system is incredibly user friendly. I’ve always been able to take it out of the box and go through the steps to get it set up. Easy peasy. And if it’s not easy peasy then I google my question and get the answer that way.
I do not love the camera or the picture quality on my iPhone. It’s not as great as I thought it would be based on all the hype. It’s an improvement over previous models, but it’s not ahhhmazing. I have heard the camera on the X is much much better.
The internet works great on the phone. I only have trouble accessing the page to pay our garbage collection bill from my phone. For that I have to go on my laptop. Which is because that page hasn’t been optimized for cell phone users. Everything else works fine.

I would be in a full on panic if that happened. Seriously I would be in an Apple store the next morning when they opened having a cow if that happened. And yes I know I need to get them off of there.

It works pretty much the same as a Samsung as far as I remember.

I would take an ancient Nokia flip phone over another Android phone. I absolutely hated the one that I had. It was so clunky and non intuitive, I felt like it took ten steps to do anything and it was annoying. I love my iPhone. I have an 8 now and it works great for me. It does everything I need it to and more. I haven’t taken too many photos with it yet but I’ve been happy with the ones I have taken so far.

I switched from a galaxy to an iPhone a few years ago for the same reasons you want to and mostly for battery life. I have not been disappointed. I currently have the XMax.

If they are taken outdoors on a sunny day, they are great. Inside I can never get the camera to focus. I have had the Samsung Galaxy 4, 6 and now 8. I have always been able to take indoor clear shots. The 8 has lots of manual settings also which are really nice to play with. My contract is up soon I'll probably just go with the 10. I hate the bloatware on the Samsung and could be talked into a different Android but it doesn't really matter since I don'thave a tone of apps and photos get saved to the memory card. I'd never get and iphone.

My personal phone is a Samsung 8 and my work phone is an iPhone 7. There are things that I like better on the Samsung, and things that I like better on the iPhone. Unless you're getting the latest iPhone, the Samsung photos are just as good as the equivalent iPhone - in fact a lot of reviews I saw had the Samsung ahead of the iPhone. I did a LOT of research the last time I upgraded my person phone 18 months ago. The most important thing for me was a good camera, and I ended up going with the Samsung 8. If I could have afforded the iPhone X I would have gotten that - it was the only iPhone at the time that had a better camera than the Samsung according to most reviews I read.
The main thing that puts me off getting an iPhone for my next phone is that every iPhone we've had in my family has started playing up after about 18 months to 2 years - mainly the battery. We haven't had any problems with any of the Samsungs we've had.

Iphone for dummies book is good. so is 1 800 applecare.. you can ask them any stupid question and they are happy to help you and trained to help us idiots..and you are speaking to americans.. This a thousand times! "They are trained to help us idiots..." yep. Americans on the phone, and you always have the choice to go to the store (if you have one). The also have free classes, one of which is "getting started with your iPhone" or something like that. I went from my first phone which was some kind of dinosaur straight to an iPhone and never looked back. At that point I already had a MacBook and I love how the phone and the laptop play so nicely with each other. Other pros: -- the Apple Store --oh yeah, I mentioned this already. Well I'll say it again... they are SO helpful. And I love their classes... they have all sorts, such as getting started on your phone (or laptop, or watch, or whatever you need), and classes on organizing your photos and using your health app and many others. -- the Apple phone support people -- oh yeah, I mentioned them already also... they speak English, the phone connection is good, they are patient, and they'll call back "to check on you" after they leave you with instructions on what to do. You can also schedule a time for them to call back for the initial call if you don't want to wait on hold. And if you do want to wait on hold they give you a CHOICE of what music you want to list to, or even nothing at all! lol, it's the little things in life. -- I love my photos but I've never used anything else really so I can't compare -- people who were complaining about iTunes...I've never used it, I just use Spotify. Works great. I've never had any issues with anything, except once in the beginning I couldn't get it to work with my Hotmail. But a session with the phone support people fixed that pretty quickly. Did I mention how helpful the phone/in-store people are?

My Samsung S8 and DH's iPhone X take comparable photos. Before he upgraded, my S8 was the clear winner. The portrait mode on his phone does take better selfies. Overall I'd say it's very close. Maybe the S10 has an even better camera, idk. My phone is now "aged", being just over 2 years old, but it works great still.
As far as ease of use, we're both befuddled by each other's phones. It's all what you're used to. You can get used to a new system, though, so that part is up to you. I like that I can add storage with an SD card. He can't do that, but he has enough storage that he probably won't need to if he doesn't keep 4000 cat pictures on his phone like I do.
Texting, talking, apps, all are similar enough that I can't see which would be a clear winner. I prefer mine and he prefers his.

I have about 7,000 pictures (snapchats, screenshots and download) on the phone, so I have no room for any extras.

You should be able to add another card to your phone. I don’t have a fancy phone at all and I have a micro sd card slot on my phone where all my pictures go, if it got full I could just swap it out or upload pictures to my computer.

Take the phone to your carrier store, they help my mom out all the time when she has a problem. They are the ones who showed me my micro sd slot too. They are very friendly and helpful, and I didn’t even buy my phone through them. We have T-Mobile and they are all very patient with my mom.

maryland bloatware is all the preloaded stuff on your phone that you can't erase. Until last fall my mom still had the Galaxy 4 and she ran out of room. All her photos were on the sd card she only has Instagram. Everything else is just pre-installed apps that also keep updating and used up all the room on her phone. Instagram couldn't even update so she could see the stories feature.
