If I’m interested in printing at home just 4x6 or smaller, what printers should I look at?
Selphy?

I bought a Selphy several years ago, the print quality is ok. But I was always frustrated that I had to do a lot of tweaking to the colors and contrast to get the prints to turn out like I wanted them to. Not long after I bought the printer I had to upgrade my computer to one with Windows 8, and subsequently Windows 10. Canon never created drivers for my printer for those operating systems even though the printer was not old. So I could only use the printer from the built in card reader, not from my computer. That really ticked me off so I can't imagine me buying another Canon printer.
Right now I am researching the Epson line of 4x6 printers. But, I have been pleasantly surprised at how good 4x6 prints come out off my regular HP desktop printer. They even do borderless and a true 4x6 size unlike the Selphy.

I had a Selphy and hated it because it wasn't a true 4x6.
I now have (and have used several years) and Epson Picturemate (not the 400, but the one released right before it). I LOVE it. I will probably upgrade to the 400 soon so I can print 5x7 size.

I have the Epson PM-400 and love that little thing.
The quality of your paper MATTERS. I printed the same photo on two different types of paper and there was a huge difference.
I have a stack of cheaper Canon paper that isn’t the BEST quality I need to get through so right now I really only print photos that don’t need to be gorgeous.
Even though I have the printer, I prefer ordering prints for most of my photo needs.

I have an old Canon MG5600. I have tried many other printers in between, but I love the quality of prints this one gives me. I buy the glossy 4x6 paper and can choose a border or to fill the page. Love it and will be very very sad when it finally dies!

My experience is you can't beat the Epson pm-400. The photos it prints are just fabulous and you have the added option of printing 5x7.

Even though I have the printer, I prefer ordering prints for most of my photo needs. I do too, but I do a daily photo journal/planner & I’m tired of the crooked Walgreens prints. I do 4 pictures per 4x6 in PL photo app and print 2x per week. I used to use sams club for 10cents per print. Sams club closed. Then I used my local Walmart for 15 cents per print. Now my Walmart closed. I’m left with Walgreens - usually can find a code so they are 15-20 cents it is handy to upload and just run in after work to pick them up. But the pictures aren’t rectangle the one side comes out concave from the machine and the ends aren’t perpendicular, it’s driving me batty!

Wow i hesitate with Eason I have an epson eco tank printer and it’s awful at pictures. It’s awful at everything but mass printing B&W documents.

I too am interested, but to be honest I have had very poor luck with Epson which makes me wary of buying one. I have a Selphy which has been fine (as an above poster said as long as I tweak my edits, I think they look great). But would prefer something else. I HATED my Epson inkjet printer though...decisions...

Currently have the Epson PM-400 and had the Picturemate before that. Love them both. Never had any issues. I only upgraded so I could print wirelessly from my phone (game changer for me). As stated above paper does matter. I also love it for printing on journaling cards. Hope you find something that works for you.

A friend brought over her selphy for me to try last year and I didn't like the prints as well. Plus, it was much more expensive per print. I use high quality matte photo paper by HP for my favourite results. I use it seldomly now however, because I can't beat the price of Costco prints, and they are good quality!

Hmmm what about the Polaroid zinc system printer? If I really want to use it for my journal maybe I want to print each pic separately?
It would avg around 4-5 cents per 2x3 print which is what I’m paying at Walgreens for crooked frustrating prints. I could print right away instead of waiting 4 days.
I could still send out to print my ‘real’ 4x6 scrapbook photos as I’ve been doing.
I could ask Ex for the old photo printer we had. It printed great photos but damn it was expensive, so I always ordered at Sam’s club. So if I’m really never printing 4x6 @ home maybe it is really the 2x3 I should be looking at?
Hmmmm first world choices

I loved my first selphy. Colors were pretty good on it. When it died I had 3 sets of ink/paper so I ordered another selphy and it's just okay. Colors aren't great at all but I've heard that they're better if you print from a card or usb or something so I'll try that. Printing wirelessly from the phone results in really dark pics, even if I set the brightness on the printer all the way up.
I got turned off of epson picturemates after my first one died while it was still in the warranty period from the print heads clogging and the replacement lasted even less time. I only print pictures once or twice a year and possible a time or two in between so I need something that doesn't have to be used much.

I bought the Picturemate PM400 last spring on a whim and I've been very happy with it. I print all of my regular photos through Snapfish, but for mini-albums (DD, WITL, etc.) I like to print at home. I also have an Epson 1430 Artisan wide-format printer; I liked the photo prints from that, but I definitely like having something smaller (and portable too).

I am also really happy with my Epson PM-400. The quality is great, easy set up and I get good prints even after not printing for a while.

I have had the older Epson PictureMate Charm, the Selphy, and the Epson PM-400. The PM-400 wins any day!!! Printing from it now as I type. Best photo printer out there IMO. Lots of threads here on the topic too. Be sure to do a search and see what others have said.

Come on...anyone in Australia know where these can be purchased for less? Unfortunately that's probably it. It's not available in Europe, NZ or Aus as far as I know. I've been toying with the idea of buying one from Amazon US because they do ship it to NZ. Can you still order off the Amazon US site? If so that might work out slightly cheaper. It's currently US$249.99.

I have a Canon MG7720 and a Selphy 910. I have zero issues with print quality with my Selphy, but the fact that it prints smaller than a 4x6 is an issue. I think it’d be excellent for someone who scraps using a traveler’s notebook, though. I love how the ink never dries out. Whenever I have issues with clogged print heads on my 7720 and I don’t have time to clean them, I just use my Selphy. Don’t print for months? Still works excellently.
If I were to do it again, I would probably get a Picturemate, though. The ink issues on my 7720 are enough of a pain in the ass that I’d consider printing my 6x8s from Persnickity Prints.

The Australian dollar is also very low right now, so I have no idea what a decent photo printer that is easily obtainable in Australia might be...my Selphy as i said is fine, but I am always in the market for other stuff.

I had to print a picture for bil today on my selphy. I transferred it to an sd card and printed it and it turned out great. I was curious so I printed it again from my phone and it was very close. The print from the sd card is just a little bit brighter. When we printed from a device before it was from dd's ipod touch. Maybe that was the issue. So prints from sd cards are better but prints from the phone are acceptable if that's the only option. eta comparison. Top is from an sd card (it cropped it weird-I guess because it wasn't the right ratio). Bottom is from my phone. Both were printed without messing with any settings on the selphy. I may have had brightness turned up from before but it's been unplugged for a while so I don't know if it saves those settings. I didn't check.
