We are moving from TN to FL soon. We have talked to a local moving company, but are having 2nd thoughts. Anyone have experience with a good company? Or one to stay away from? Thanks for any help.

Our move from WA to CA was paid for, but I got the quotes and picked the mover and we went with Allied with no regrets (that was 8 years ago).
Keep in mind It is a saleman that gives you the quote and you will never see them again. The guy that moved us contracted with Allied and was in charge of the inventory checklist and managing the loading. The guys actually moving things were a combination of local employees and day labor that the driver may never have met before. If you can move mid-month you are more likely to have employees packing/wrapping/moving your things instead of day labor.

Whatever they quote you, it will cost at least twice as much. Suck it up and pack that U-Haul.

We have had three out of state moves and each time I got three estimates from larger national chains (United, Allied, Bekins, etc.) I personally wouldn't go with a local company for an out of state move. We used United for our last two moves and were very happy with them. The quote was spot on...actually I think we had the option of picking a flat rate quote or one that would change based on actual weight and we picked the flat rate.

We used Atlas 4 years ago and had no issues. We had a specific amount of weight that DH's employer would pay for and we were under that amount, so all was good. Our quote was spot on also. A person from the company came out to our house, looked at what we had and estimated well.
I would go with one of the nationals, realizing they might sub it out.

We just moved from Los Angeles to Vancouver, BC using PODs. It was a pain packing the PODs, but we were very careful and had no damage except a cardboard CD box and red food dye double bagged in ziplock baggies.
The bids from Allied, Love to Move and Crown all changed as we were talking to them. It felt very bait and switch to me. I would get several bids and read the small print. Allied was the most irritating switch because the sales guy said he was unaware that a Canadian move was considered international so an extra 15% charge for a local move to a staging area. Right... Also, he was dismissive of my concerns of breakable stuff.
Read reviews online, some of the horror stories are hair raising. I almost want to thank the Allied guy for helping me dodge a bullet.

Don't know where in TN you are, but I moved from West TN to TX 6 years ago and contracted with the local Bekins movers. I had used Bekins several times and had always been happy with them. After that experience, I won't use them again. The loading went OK, although it took much longer than I thought it should. But I sat here in an empty house for a full week before the driver got here at 10 PM to unload - yes, I said PM! And he had no help so he had to do the whole bit himself. Apparently he went all the way to NC before heading back to my place, with stops along the way in AR and God knows where else. Not a happy time for me.

We've been moved twice and used Ford Van Lines, out of Omaha (one move was to there, one from) but we were extremely happy with them. It was a corporate relocation so no idea on prices, but service, professionalism and only one broken caster in a plastic storage bin was top notch. Best of luck on your move!

We just moved from VA to MI, and we used U Pack. www.upack.com. They were reasonably priced, and were extremely friendly to work with. They drop off the trailer on a day and time frame specified by you, and you get 3 days to fill it (weekends do not count). When it's full, you call them and they pick it up. They will then drive it to wherever you're going, and when you get there you call and arrange a time for them to deliver to your house. When it was all said and done, for them we came out below our quoted price, so I was thrilled. They do not provide boxes or pads in their trucks, those are extra. And they do not pack or load for you. We packed everything ourselves, but we hired people to load all the boxes and furniture into the truck. We used Moving Staffers for that, as that was who UPack recommends. They were very fast, and had some mad Tetris packing skills! I was shocked that they got it all in 1 truck!!! We hired 2 Men and a Truck to unload our moving truck for us. I really really liked them.

On our two cross-country moves, we used North American (chosen for us by the DH's company, which was paying for the move) and Graebel (chosen by us, paid for by the company). When we moved from Orange County to San Diego in June, we used another national company whose name is escaping me. We've used local companies for more local moves, but honestly for an out of state move, I'd definitely stick with a national company. We've NEVER had a problem with the costs changing from the initial bid, including the packing (and on this last move, we had them UNpack us too - which was money very well spent IMO).
Good luck on your move!

I have never moved far but have moved several times within a 5 mile radius. I can't imagine having someone come into my home and go through my things and pack it up. And then add in that I have to trust them to package and move my things with care so nothing is damaged or broken ... it makes my heart rate increase just thinking about it! I honestly could not do let someone else do this for me. But I'm a tad bit of a control freak.
