I really need to not buy anything, as I have so much product that is untouched.
I'm also planning to move, so I am going through my stuff and finding everything I have squirreled away throughout my house. I don't want to even think about what all I could have done with that money.
I'd love to say I'm not buying anything for DD, but that would be a lie.
I will commit to not buying: • a new album • wood veneer, cork, or rubber embellishments • packages of die cuts
I will most likely buy: • KP stamps and kits • a DD kit designed by Jasmine Jones, Liz Tamanaha, or Brandi Kinkaid • some AE stamps, if and only if there are new designs that aren't a rehash of what I own
My plan for the new year is to quit my Stories by the Month sub (I feel the need to finish out the calendar year of kits) and ignore the AE items, unless it is on major sale (travel items are exempt! 😂). I've started cutting back on my KP purchases and I try to buy stuff only when it is on sale - unless it is something I would regret not getting if it sold out. I do plan to keep my monthly KP project kit though.
I'm planning to go on a Viking River cruise next September with my mom. We're leaving out of Amsterdam and sailing down the Rhine before we go to Oberammagau for the Passion Play, and then we fly out of Munich. I need to save money for excursions and souvenirs from that trip.

Budget - I don't have one, but I probably should. I probably spend $75-100 between kits, stamps and an album.
Does anyone know if the red and white stripe album by Simple Stories has a thicker spine?
If I don't end up loving Ali's kit I might just use the Pink Fresh Christmas collection. I love the bright, fun aesthetic. It would go well with all the IACB digitals I have from last year.

I'm not feeling inspired by anything I've seen so far, and to be honest, I'm beginning to fall out of love with this project. I might just document Christmas in my regular PL album. Or then again, I might spend 100€ on crap that I just can't live without...

Does anyone know if the red and white stripe album by Simple Stories has a thicker spine? The only wide spine option Simple Stories offer is their annual holiday Sn@p binder ( this year's is from the Country Christmas collection). All the others are "normal" spine width AKA small if you're used to 6x8 AE/SC albums.

Have you thought of keeping a little expense/savings spread sheet for your scrappy stuff so you get a good feel of how much you're stashing away by only buying the essentials this year? Every time you're tempted to get something but don't, add it to the savigns for Viking River cruise trip column. After a couple of months, you should start feeling very happy with yourself. Tallying up savings can release the same kind of endorphins you get from the infamous buyer's high!

7. I want to buy a new iPad if photoshop ever releases for the iPad. Love this idea (and smart investment) and that you already know this is something you want to save for in case Photoshop ever goes to iPad... There's nothing like Photoshopping from the comfort of your sofa or bed.

I sub to both of AE's kits and to KP so it just keeps piling up but I don't want to stop my subs because I DO like them. 🙄 To you and @northrigg , are you asking yourself what value these unused kits are adding to your life that is to say: does it serve a purpose or bring you joy? It sounds simple and stupid but it's the core question the guys from the Minimalists (who practice and teach the message of minimalism as it should be: without competing for owning the least, by repeating that minimalism looks different for each person) rely on and convey whenever a listener or Patreon contributor comes with a similar situation to the one you two (and many of us on this board) are describing. Is that actual value or aspirational (imaginary) value? Imagining you'll use the stuff isn't actually adding value to your present life. Sometimes, it's good to sit down and take the time to try to rationalise our current and past purchases. If your craft stuff feels overwhelming, it isn't adding value or bringing you joy. It's actually subtracting value from your life (less happiness, less creativity, less money, less space). In case anyone wants to have some discussion on this topic play in the background while they get on with life, here are a couple videos to get you thinking:

Wow, Felicityjane knows how to do a sale. I must have been with Ali for too long because I thin I forgot sales are actually supposed to discount items. I picked up the album, looks like nice quality. Shipping was expensive, but I felt I was getting enough of a discount on the items I picked to pull the trigger. Plus I went through and tossed items I wasn't loving anymore in my stash so I might have a little room....

Why did I look at the FJ sale? It's fabulous. I have never purchased from there before but I will be today. I've bought in past FJ sales and not only is the packaging super cute, the products are really really good quality. I think her pictures don't do justice to her products at all. They tend to look a bit washed out, when in fact the colors are super saturated. I'm hoping you love your parcel when it arrives! I also had a few items missing and they were shipped promptly. So I can also say customer service was great and no "send me a picture of your missing item" like SC does.

Wow...it took me about 3 seconds to buy that grey and white album from FJ. Total impulse buy but I'm very excited. Agree that shipping cost was high but mitigated by good price of the product.

nicolep further to what sleepingbooty said, I recently heard a definition of minimalism vs maximalism that really resonated that might help in this case. Maximalism basically holds that if something has value to you you get it/keep it. (This is the message of all advertising). Minimalism concedes that there are some things that have value to us (they are beautiful, we like them, they might be useful) that you might choose not to bring into your life/keep because you'd prefer to focus on some bigger value, or because they don't bring enough value into your life to be worth the trade off in what they cost ($$, clutter, overwhelm, frustration). I encountered this when I gave up Fbk. Yes, it had some value in my life. But the trade-offs weren't worth that small value. I wonder if AE/KP stuff is nice enough to be worth the feeling of having too much? Because there are a lot of lovely, beautiful, useful things in the world that we can't or won't buy for various reasons. Appreciating something doesn't mean you need to have it. Sometimes I just treat things like museum pieces - "oh, look how beautiful that is! what a joy to be able to see that it exists in the world!" >clicks away.

Anyone interested in discussing DD/JYC budget in here? I feel like it's a bit of a sensitive topic but it could be an important one to crack open before all the pre-order/order periods open. To those who (are trying to) budget: 1. Got a maximum threshold figured out? 2. Do you have a goal amount you'd ideally like to stick to? 3. Do you have any other purchases or savings you want to work towards to keep in mind before you do some scrappy holiday shopping? 4. Do you feel like splurging on scrappy December goodies in the past has had a negative impact on your savings/debt/spending money? 5. Triggers that make you spend and you feel you need to pay attention to before you hit that 'purchase' button? 6. Need an accountability partner when the DD spending games begin? Let us know and we'll check in periodically. 7. Saving for a specific crafty spend that you need to keep in mind before you start spending left and right? For the project I'm doing, I need nothing. And I want very little. I'm happy with my computer journaled JYC. I did that last year, and it was a really good place to start. Doing a blurb book for the photos, or adding them to my year's highlight book will be enough. I'll get my craftiness in with cardmaking. I will probably buy a couple of digital items while I'm working on my book, or if IACB releases something that goes especially well with my current supplies. I'd estimate $10-20 will be the most I will spend. I don't plan to buy any other crafty Xmas supplies, but I'm a bit of sucker for Memory Box dies, good Christmas sentiments, and word dies, so I'll be trying not to look at any "inspiration" because I already have plenty and I've not had time or energy to use them enough. We have done some travel this year and will be doing a bit more travel (visiting family) next year, so between that and paying for the stupid MRIs that I need every year (that my excellent insurance only pays a portion of, grrrr! this time of year is expensive ) I feel like I need to watch all of my spending all of the time. So my minimalist inclinations and the knowledge that I already have enough help.

What is IACB?
I have a confession: I am a Christmas scrapaholic. I am in the process of cleaning out my craft room. I have had no problem giving away stuff I hadn't used or no longer liked. Except for Christmas stuff. And I keep buying it too. I just really love the illusion of a happy, perfect, shiny life that all the Christmas products represent to me (and yes Hallmark movies too). Right now I am in a position of being able to afford scrappy things. But I can see where that will not be the case in about 4 more years.
For all of you that feel overwhelmed by your stash, can you give some of it away? There are organizations that would be happy to have all that free stuff.
Also, If you live in the Chicagoland area, Craft Fancy will be having a garage sale. This is a way for you to sell your old stuff and make a bit of money.

If you are in the city, I don't think it's worth the distance or the traffic headache. It is a nice little store and I do like supporting craft stores. They really cater to card makers now. They have a ton of dies and stamps. They do get a few new paper collections but it is not like the old days, when most of their store was scrapbooking. I think I will be checking out their garage sale though. I always love seeing what things people want to get rid of. The garage sale is September 16-18th

Oh my word, the FJ international shipping costs . I'm sure their stuff is beautiful and I love that grey album, but I'm not paying more for shipping than the actual product. No way. I think that's why I mostly stick with Ali's DD products - mini kit + album + a stamp (sometimes) + international shipping ends up being fairly reasonable for me.

I generally need FJ to present their shop page by “category.” I’m fine with keeping things as collections when they are released, but it would be great if one could search (I mean by clicking not by physically typing in search terms) inventory by type and not just collection. Does this already exist and I’m just not capable of using the internet?

I think it was @northrigg who said FJ was having a sale and that would be a good way to pick up last year's Christmas stuff. Sorry, I can't find the original post to quote, but THANK YOU! The Australian dollar is terrible right now, but a lot of Holly was hugely on sale. I got last year's album for half price! And they say it has a 2.5 inch spine so that should be good. I still have plenty of things left from previous years I can add to the new things I got this morning, plus I can always pick and choose other things like the new FJ or Crate paper to add if I like those, but now I feel safe from feeling forced to buy from the AE/SC machine. So I am sending a huge thank you out to everyone on this thread!

Oh thanks so much @northrigg! I got almost of the the Holly things they had except the gold numbers and the wood veneer trees. I have plenty of those type of items. I should have also realised they had some Joy items, but no matter. I have bought from FJ a few times in the past and their stuff is top quality. I was so excited to get the cardstock dividers, and the vellum pockets. I was drooling over those last year. Now what I really need is more cards...I never seem to have enough of the "right" card for my spreads. I might have to break down and do some stamping and i am keeping my eyes open for whatever Crate puts out this year. At least the FJ albums don't have 2x2 pockets to fill, haha!

That annoys me too - I usually search byy words like alpha, puffy, stamp, paper, vellum, silicone, kit etc or click on the new category. Pretty sure I probably miss out on seeing things but I can't be bothered to click through each collection.

I bought the FJ Holly kit last year because I didn't feel like the AE kit was enough product for what I would have liked and it was amazing! High quality and I was ok with the shipping because there was so much stuff!

Out of curiosity, is everyone doing the same size DD again this year? 6x8 is my go to size these days although I do mix it up from time to time. I haven't found an album I love yet but at this stage I'm thinking I'll probably stick with the 6x8. It's a good size for me given I document every day in the lead up to Christmas.

I don't have a set budget but I don't like to carry a lot of Christmas stuff over from year to year and I find most Christmas collections are really winter oriented so I tend not to buy a lot anyway. This year I'm looking for an album but so far I don't really like anything I've seen so I'm hoping that Ali's are a) designs I like and b) still available when I wake up since the sales start in the middle of the night. I bought a few things from the Holly collection at FJ but plan to use most of those on non-Christmas projects. Christmas is the one area I probably don't splurge.

I don’t have a real budget but I am thinking I won’t spend a ton. Last year I bought some things but never used them because of stuff going on in my life. But I also don’t have much of a stash either so...I have a white 6*8 album ($5 when Baby Boy Bakery or whatever it was called, went out of business. SomIncoukd use that but I’m also thinking of doing 3*8 also. 2. Ideally, I would like it to be under $100 and honestly I haven’t seen much I just have to have. 3. We’ve got college tuition for two kids to pay for so that’s always in the back of my mind. 4. It really. We budget every month and I’m pretty good about saving for DD. 5. I don’t think so. I do get swayed by stamps and I hardly ever stamp so I am telling myself no stamps this year. 6. Sure. What I really need is someone reminding me that more isn’t better. I do better with just one kit. Too much overwhelms me. 7. I don’t think so. I just want to spend intentionally, not just because everyone else is.
