While visiting my family in southern IL, my DH took a break from writing his SBIR grant on his triple-negative breast cancer drug and experienced quite an unreal experience while visiting this store. He described how the loud speakers were streaming gospel music and then the gentle interruption of "get your AK-47's on sale and ammo in aisle 3, it's your constitutional right to own a gun, etc." He described many aisles of assault riffles for sale. But the question- "did you get your free popcorn while browsing?" OMG.... what is going on? It was surreal....

That does not sound anything at all like our Rural King in Florida. I love that place! We always go early in the morning and I don't ever recall hearing them even use the speakers, let along promote fire arms. They do have free popcorn, right when you walk in the store. We go there to buy bird seed in bulk. I enjoy browsing their seasonal stuff and the chicks and bunnies as well. Also, they often have really cool rain boots.

I’ve not had that experience in the Rural King here, with the exception of the popcorn.

This store is local to me and there are two separate Rural King stores/owners, etc...from what I understand. Rural King started in Mattoon, in east central Illinois and is a family owned business, they have over 100 stores all over the country. Rural King Supply is a different company that has 6 stores that are farther south in Illinois. I'm not sure what you consider southern Illinois, as most people assume if you're south of I80 you're in southern Illinois. The Rural King that I'm most familiar with is the one based out of Mattoon as it's near my farm. Yes they have guns of all types. I've purchased a handgun there and buy my ammo there as its reasonable. I have heard all sorts of muzak there, including what might be considered 'light rock' Christian type. The only announcements that I've ever heard there have been employees calling for information for something or for a carry out. There are usually a few dogs wandering around with their owners and dog treats are by the popcorn. Cause you HAVE to get your free popcorn and coffee while you browse. There's a LOT of surreal stuff that happens in Illinois these days.

Rural Kingmy rural king is based out of matoon as well we have a rural king - yep - free coffee, popcorn, and dog treats they sell firearms - i've never heard them BLAST anything over the loudspeakers as to 'assault rifles' there is no one definition of 'assault rifle' even the verbiage in the two federal bans - 2018/94-04 use different definitions none of the 'assault rifles' legally owned by citizens are the same as the military definition of 'assualt rifles' the difference is 'fully automatic' (bumb stocks not withstanding as they are now outlawed) AR15s are one pull one shot which will produce approx 50+ shots if the shooter is fast and pulls the trigger continuously a fully automatic weapon will shoot 1000 rounds in the same amount of time and just a reminder AR does NOT stand for 'automatic rifle' (it stands for ArmaLite - the manufacturer) i'm not defending or taking a stance - but passing along information i LOVE rural king i buy jeans there - dog food - fishing supplies - the cutest yard shit - and they have a great tool section gina

I LOVE the rural king we have(well it's in the next town but..) I'm in there quite often actually and planning to go today. I've never heard them project anything over speakers much less pushing guns, but those would sell good enough around here anyway.. The free popcorn and coffee is cool, but tbh I don't bother most of the time when I'm there.

We go to the Rural King by our lake house and it is always an experience. Suburbs in Chicago do not have one - our loss.
Never any music, but free popcorn is always available and last week DH showed me the live chicks you can buy!!

This sounds like a gross exaggeration It does to me as well. Rural King is definitely.... country, but I can't say I recall even hearing anything over the speakers when I've been in there. They do have popcorn though.

They do have popcorn though. No exaggeration. There was definitely someone announcing ammo and sales over the loud speaker. I misspoke about the "assault" weapons as I'm not familiar with them. This store was originally the first Wal-mart and the grocery store and converted to RK. The arms section is in the grocery store, so many aisles. This particular RK is near the Jefferson Barracks Bridge area on IL side. I have no need to exaggerate. Just wondering if all RKs do this? Obviously not.

They seem purposely inflammatory and exaggerating.

Go visit that store and report back and describe your experience. I'm sure all stores are different, especially how the store promotes their product. I'm not sure what "inflammatory and exaggerating mean" to you, maybe I described an "embellishment" as in telling a story. Maybe it was a Rural King Supply store, which is different from Rural King. I was expecting a store to have supplies for feed animals/farms and seeing little chicks. Not a weapons dispensary promoting their product, which was alarming to me. This is a message board to describe how someone feels and their experiences.

You said your husband visited there. Was it you or your husband? Surreal. Get your AK-47s. Aisles of assault rifles. Surreal (again). Weapons dispensary. Sure. No exaggeration or inflammatory language there.

I went there, too... it is a weapons dispensary... a business that dispenses weapons. I said I misspoke that I'm not familiar with all assault rifles and the terminology... my point is the announcement and sheer shock of the aisles of weapons/guns sold at RK. Not expecting this. What is your problem? It is surreal to have 5 aisles of weapons to browse for purchase at a RK. That is my point.

Again, please explain what was exaggerated or inflammatory language? I have been polite and poised about my experience. Maybe your experience was different. Please reply? I have not disrespected anyone, only responding with our experience. Keep going...

And calling it a weapons dispensary is ridiculous and unless you frequently refer to Home Depot as a toilet dispensary then your words and intention are meant to inflame. And I still don't understand why if you also went there that your husband had to "describe" the music, announcements, and aisles of weapons.

No you didn't give specifics as to what terms are inflammatory and exaggerated....It is a weapons dispensary... It's a place that dispenses weapons... I don't find that derogatory... it's what the business does. An establishment that sells weapons. ... I used my DH's point of view because he described to me that was his interpretation and then after we left we discussed our different views of what we heard and described a different view point from two PhD scientists visiting a new environment...... Just describing our situation. I have not put any political tone into this at all. Just what we observed and happened. What is happening in America.

Just like a pot dispensary despenses pot...

Nobody needs these types of weapons. Whatever the fuck you want to call them. If *these legal weapons* can shoot 41 shots in 30 seconds luckily ONLY KILLING 9 PEOPLE and injuring 37 (how the hell can I actually be typing this?!) , you better fucking believe that is an "assault" weapon. "Passing on information", really? Is that what you call it? How can you even attempt to justify that as not taking a stand minimizing it like you just have?
