And yet ... his district keeps sending him back to Congress ... I am in 'his' district and I find him appalling. I am a middle of the road, middle aged farmer/stockman. I don't check all the boxes that his supporters do. I am pro choice (let me tell you, that earns NO friends around here). I am not anti-immigration. I think more channels need to be opened to allow people to enter the country legally. I am some what fiscally conservative, and I have NEVER voted for Steve King. But the top things I hear in support of King are immigration and Pro Life. People are desperately afraid of anyone who is of a different color or creed in these parts, although they will never admit it. The big dairies up north hire migrants and illegals, because they can't get enough help, but they also back King in a big way. They just sweep the entire "illegal" thing under the carpet, like it never happens. This Esquire article is a long one - but worth a read. The area up north is VERY conservative. Dutch Reformed, and they circle up tight. Esquire article on Northern Iowa DairiesLast time JD Scholten was pretty close to winning. Hopefully this time he can pull it off. He did come close. I knew the death knell on his campaign was when he had Bernie Sanders campaign for him. He might have gotten some votes from the old coots around here that really are tired and embarrassed of Steve King - but once Bernie entered the picture, all bets were off. Bernie is WAY to far left for these parts. Lots of people won't admit they think just like he does, and send him to Congress because he accurately represents their views. That's true in northwest Iowa and in parts of Texas and lots of other places where these true deplorables keep winning. I HATE being lumped in with this. It gets me worked up every time, especially since we farm. Everyone assumes we are King supports. NO. NO. NO. I know a lot of people just like him around here though. That is an interesting article. I grew up in northwest Iowa but moved to Orange City in 7th grade. The parade we were at this spring was Tulip Festival. My mom currently lives about 8 miles from Sibley. From what I have seen, there is a pretty sharp contrast between Sioux county and the rest of the area in terms of religion) as well as prosperity in general. Sioux county is where the Dutch reformed are. The area is growing but also changing demographically. When I lived there, people were more open to people of other races. But they were not very open to other religions. I grew up catholic, and was frequently told by friends who were Christian Reformed that their parents wouldn’t allow them to date someone who was catholic.

Esquire article well worth reading. I have earlier read parts of the info but this is much more in depth... IF Nunes was not involved I might have more sympathy toward all of them... Seems today they can not get work Visas, big problem, although dt has no problems getting them for the vineyards! The thing is that dairy farms work 24/7/365, not like farms growing crops which are more seasonal...
I don't know the answers but there needs to be way for people who want to work should be able to, but it need to be regulated fairly.. and possible path to permanent residency as well as citizenship. They help feed us and we MUST keep local family 'farmers' in business. (farmers, agriculture, dairy, meat packing etc)

Bernie is WAY to far left for these parts. I don't want to derail this thread, but Bernie could very well repeat his Steve King performance on a grander scale -- i.e. the entire Dem party -- if he gets the chance. He's WAY too far left for LOTS of parts. I do agree with you ... but if Bernie was there campaigning for JD Scholten, I’m sure it was at Scholten’s invitation. Maybe he should have known better. What flies in Northern California may totally bomb in northwestern Iowa.

This exactly is what keeps me up at night. Until the 2016 election I was proud to be an American. Now all I feel is shame and disgust. I was so damned naive for as old as I am. I had no idea how really, truly stupid and devoid of any moral compass that a huge chunk of the citizens of this country are. Couldn’t have said it better. My DH knew shit went down when I stated a couple months ago I’d take Dick Cheney any day over these idiots. Had a discussion the other day that quite obviously my own white privilege allowed me to stick my head in the sand, that I wasn’t naive enough to believe having our first black President somehow cured this country of all it’s ills. But I sure as fuck wasn’t prepared for my fellow citizens to hear and see Donald Trump and vote for him in 2016, let alone the absolute hatred that drips from his twitter feed and rallies after he was elected, and have them double down on supporting him. People have challenged my DH for feeling disgust with this country, can’t understand how a retired military guy can feel that way. He simply tells them who better to understand the shit show we have now than a military guy? If they want to keep arguing, he tells them to really take a second and think about his statement, then leaves the conversation. One of us has to be diplomatic, because I’m done coddling any Trump supporter in my life. If you support him, and tell me you listen to his words, read his twitter feed, are aware of the policies he’s enacted, then you are a racist. Your Christianity and supposedly saving the babies by having anyone with an R by their name isn’t going to save you from the label. I’d argue that for some of these people, having had a black president for 8 years has seemingly more firmly entrenched their bigotry. 😕

Please make him go away!! Iowa we need you to vote him out!! Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) doubled down Saturday on his remarks criticizing abortions conducted in responses to cases of rape and incest. The Iowa Republican tweeted his thanks to pro-life commentator Rebecca Kiessling for remarks she made to the Iowa Standard in King's defense. He tweeted Saturday that fetuses developing from cases of rape or incest were "as precious as any other" and should be protected, ".@rebeccakiesslin of Savethe1 delivered a powerful statement to the entire nation for legal protection from abortion for innocent babies who were conceived in rape or incest. Their lives are as precious as any other, regardless of how they came to be," King wrote. King's tweet came in response to Kiessling's criticism of abortions for reasons of rape or incest in the Standard, which Kiessling opposes citing her own conception from her biological mother's rape at the hands of her biological father. ** thehill.com/homenews/house/458704-king-doubles-down-says-rape-incest-should-not-be-factored-in-to-abortion
