www.washingtonpost.com/politics/evangelicals-arent-turned-off-by-trumps-first-term--theyre-delighted-by-it/2019/08/11/3911bc88-a990-11e9-a3a6-ab670962db05_story.html"In conversation, evangelical voters paint the portrait of the Trump they see: a president who acts like a bully but is fighting for them. A president who sees America like they do, a menacing place where white Christians feel mocked and threatened for their beliefs. A president who’s against abortion and gay rights and who has the economy humming to boot... For many, the eight years of the Obama administration felt like a nightmare. The indelible image for the Rev. Chris Gillott was the night the Supreme Court ruled gay marriage legal across the land and Obama flooded the White House in rainbow lights. “I didn’t see it lit up in a rainbow this June,” the youth pastor at Christian Life Center in Bensalem, Pa., notes, with a hint of satisfaction." Screw the shootings and degradation of the presidency. We got us some gay-haters and rippin' stock market! WOOT!

I try to understand this daily. Mainly because one of my aunts is this way, and she posts stuff daily on facebook about it. I finally had to hide her posts. Couldn't unfriend her, that would be WW3 in my family. But then it's not just her. It's her friends posting back to her about how incredible a man Trump is, and how much good he has done for the USA. I'm seriously asking here..because goodness knows I don't want a family feud on fb. but what HAS he done? Has he seriously improved our economy that much more? I think he has, right? I don't think health care is any different. And they are big time kick out the immigrants and pro-life also. They feel all their retirement money is funding insurance for illegals, and abortions at planned parenthood. UGH

I don't get it. Every single evangelical person I know, and I know a lot of them, think Trump is the best president we have had in a long, long time. They truly believe that Obama took the US to the brink of disaster and now Trump is saving us and solving all of the problems Obama caused. Several of them have said more than once that Trump is a gift from God.
I do NOT get it. At all.

I don’t either. My very Mormon family feels the same way. It makes me not want to interact with them at all, even my very sick mom, because I always feel surrounded by the enemy when I’m with them, a completely deluded enemy that uses no critical thinking skills. I know they think I’m deluded too, but I’ll contend I’m still the more ethical, compassionate, and even intelligent person.

He’s not actually against abortion. 😒 Which may be the truth, BUT he is definitely not FOR a women’s right to choose. And his personal beliefs are much less important, insignificant really, compared to his public political stance which involves packing the Supreme Court with as many anti-choice judges as he can. That fact, even if he may have secretly paid for abortions in his own lifetime, may have an impact on women’s reproductive rights for generations to come.

This is what they believe he did, despite the fact that much of it is a lie, other parts are due to someone else’s work not Trump. I think there’s 2 maybe 3 things that might be viewed as truthful. It was fact checked somewhere, that’s all fake news, you know! Trump did all of that stuff & more he’s done more than any president ever...🙄

a menacing place where white Christians feel mocked and threatened for their beliefs. A president who’s against abortion and gay rights and who has the economy humming to boot... They must be inciting their neighbors, because I hear nothing anywhere near mocking and threatening Any Christians around here, including me! He only started talking about abortion when he decided to run for president, well known fact! The economy is not so humming right now today and may get far worse... too much talk of recession!
Oh and
NO new wall as of yet! NO new Healthcare a s of now! NO infrastructure, new or repairs! Gutted the State dept, diplomatic core. Gutted regulations for OUR safety, food safety, water and air...
Cutting requirements of CDL truck drivers. No mention of bus drivers yet, safety of our kids!! Tariffs killing the farmers.... shame on the farmers who are still supporting him!
And the Evangelicals don't seem to care if their children might be killed in churches, schools, walking or riding down the street..... None of them have any clue what is in the Bible or what Jesus would do!

I know it's anecdotal, but I have several very Christian friends, one I met through the original Peas, who are brave enough to express their dislike of Trump loudly. It's not brave for me to do it - 99.9 percent of my FB friends are like-minded to me. But they have 99.9 percent conservative Christian friends and are willing to take it on. I admire them.

The real hilarity of that asshole's supporters is that he doesn't have a religious bone in his body. HE IS A CON!
I also think those who are against any type of sexuality except straight white, missionary sex are a bunch of perverts. They are the only people that I've known who think about or give a damn what anyone else does in their bedroom. They are the ones who are obsessed with other's sex live and that is perverted. Normal people don't think about what others do in the bedroom.

Ya know, the other thing that pisses me off is that I am vehemently anti-religion and have no tolerance for it. However, I am a great admirer of Jesus and believe the values that he tried to teach the human race are of great value. I try to follow his teachings and I don't need to believe that he was some magic, immaculately conceived god to do that. He was a really great teacher and philosopher and that is more than enough reason to honor him.

I don't like to call myself Christian because many evangelicals give all Christians a bad name. Let's just say that I am a believer of Jesus Christ and his teachings. I believe that we should follow his example. I try to lead a good life, be kind to people, help people, advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves. I want the best for people, whether they are like me or totally different from me. These are all things that Jesus calls us to do. I cannot for the life of me understand why any follower of Jesus would support Donald Trump. He stands for the complete opposite of the teachings of Jesus. I work for a church and can tell you that many of my co-workers share my feelings about Trump. There is no way Jesus would approve of how Trump is leading this country.
Furthermore, it's up to us to speak out against Trump and his policies. Jesus would not expect us to sit silently. I speak out loudly and at every opportunity.

I think we are all just sitting here gobsmacked because we don’t understand how people we thought were otherwise compassionate, thoughtful, intelligent people buy into this crap. And how those that say they are against him are still spouting baloney like “the Dems better put up a great candidate or I am voting third party or not at all” and fail to see how this is still supporting him in the end.

I also think a lot of more conservative leaning Peas don't even open any threads labeled political any more, because they assume that whatever it is, it'll be anti-Trump. And yeah, I really don't think there's any {valid} answer, so they just ignore the questions.

A month or more ago, someone, I can't remember who, posted a long list of what Trump has accomplished, but it was noted that it was from the WH website and mostly made up shit.
I am totally interested in a REAL list of the great things he has done. I'd be very open to that if it can be proven it's not fake and made up. I don't think such a list exists, honestly. Everyone I know who supports him and talks about all of the great things he has done exclusively get their news from Fox News, sooo....

I am a practicing Protestant Christian in an Evangelical tradition. I used to consider myself Politically Conservative. Now, I guess Libertarian is the closest in accuracy, but I'm almost a political agnostic.
I loudly denounce Trump to both my liberal and my conservative friends. I didn't vote for him and have never defended him.
So I can't speak as a first hand Trump supporter, but I think I have enough first hand knowledge of the other parts of the equation to *guess* what the mindset is.
I was a teenager during the Clinton years. I think a sex scandal in the White House was a defining moment for the modern religious conservative in political activism. Focus on the Family and other conservative groups really started leaning in to "us versus them." The conservatives were the US and everyone else was a THEM. They had us convinced that liberal policies were sending America to Hell in a Handbasket, and that every new adoption of a liberal policy was an attack on "US" (the religious conservatives).
Obama, in their eyes, was the liberal darling who was going to damn us all. They saw his liberal choices as an attack on them, their beliefs, and even their definition of what America represents.
So now Trump comes along, and he acts like an "US." He's not pursuing liberal policies, judges, or leaders. Their conservative status quo is safe. In my understanding, it's less about what he IS doing, and more about what he's NOT doing. And support of him is really just support of themselves. When you believe the government has been out to get you and your values for the last 8 years, you feel relieved that someone isn't waging those same attacks (even if he's waging other, worse ones). I've never heard anyone I know who voted for him argue from a position that he was the most skilled or that his character is good. I only hear, "well at least he's not..."
That's my perception of how they think.
I left working in politics for two reasons. One was that Christians seemed more concerned with making Republicans than they were with making disciples.
Christians do believe that people are in leadership of nations because God allowed it. But where some think Trump is a gift to our nation, I believe he's a judgment.
ETA: In case it's not abundantly clear, I don't endorse this way of thinking. But it's my best attempt at an explanation.

I lived literally down the street from Focus on the Family for 4 years and found them to be evil that poisoned Colorado Springs: James Dobson is a poster child for everything that Jesus was against. Dobson was besties with Haggard, until the Haggard’s gay sex scandal became open knowledge. I came to hate evangelical Christianity while living in Colorado Springs and had to explain on more than one occasion to my grocery bag boys - whose families belonged to FoF, why I was Jewish and not afraid of going to hell (at the time I wore a Star of David necklace) - in addition to seeing what FoF did to influence the cadets at the Air Force Academy. There was a lot of money spent and activities aimed at roping USAFA cadets into the FoF fold. It was calculated and anything but Christ-like.
