Good luck! I just got back from a two-day road trip taking my son to college for his senior year. We chatted, laughed, and listened to podcasts for 12 hours. Ours didn't end up at the beach (it ended up in a shit-ton of work moving him into his apartment), but it was one of the highlights of my summer.

Safe travels. The ocean at the end of the trip sounds like a wonderful reward.

Sounds like the first leg of your journey went pretty well! My cat howls and does a ‘dirty protest’ whenever I put him in the carrier. I’m glad yours were better behaved!

I will be traveling with either 3 or 4 cats and my dog and I’m so happy to hear yours did well. I plan to have my vet give me something to help them with the stress before I start out. I would like to take all 4 cats at once to avoid having my neighbor feed the outdoor kitty until I can get back to pick him up.
How did you handle getting them in and out during a hotel stay? And what did you do about litter boxes? I picture mine going under the bed and me struggling to get them back out and into carriers. I plan on buying new and larger carriers, like dog sized, than the ones I have now that are just good for vet trips. Since they will be spending hours in them, I figured I need to go as big as possible and just sell or donate them when I don’t need them any longer. I’m mostly concerned about the litter box situation during a long drive and the reloading into their crates from a hotel room. I’d love your tips!
Have a fun and safe remainder of your trip.

That sounds like a slice of heaven to me. Honestly. A three day road trip, ending up at the ocean? For good? Yeah...that sounds really, really nice. It really does sound nice, just what you need. Glad to read the update and that the cats have done well so far. 👍🏽

The vet gave us medication but the cats know. They won’t touch any food I put it on this morning. They are not usually picky. I have small litter boxes. One I have on the floor of the front seat which is protected by large trash bags. Mostly they liked having the option to stay on the crate vs closed up. I have a crate for each. Soft sided. But the shadows like to squeeze in together. Once I remembered that they did well. dexter just doesn’t travel. Large amounts of drool and heavy breathing, till I let him out. And that’s with medication. Today I’m going to make him a nest with my clothes in the front seat and see how he does. Once he was out of the crate he seemed to do much better. He doesn’t get Curious like the others and doesn’t wander around the car. ‘’None of them are hiding. They stick really close to me and so when it’s time to pack up...5 min... I will just grab one and put them in the crate...the rest usually want to see what I’m doing. So far it hasn’t been to hard

We did an 8-hour road trip with our cat that hates the car. We asked the vet about how best to handle it and his recommendations were: - get a large dog crate and put a towel from home and a cardboard box large enough to fit him in it - no food, water or litter box in it (if you don't feed or water them, no need for a box and they're too scared to eat anyways) - once the crate is placed in the car, put a sheet over it so they're covered - make sure the crate is temperature controlled - ie not in the sun where it will be the hottest and make sure there is air circulation We used all of his tips and our guy was out like a light sleeping peacefully at the 15-minute mark.

How do you travel with cats? It’s hard enough to travel with dogs It’s actually easier. As posted above they don’t eat or drink so I don’t really have to stop to let them out. Traveling alone is tricky cause I have to eat and bathroom but crack the windows and make sure I’m in and out in a flash. Drive Thru for food. My car isn’t big enough for s large anything so they snuggle on the front seat. The shadows took turns sitting on dexter as a thunder shirt type thing and he settled right down.

It is so great to know that you’ll be in your new home tonight! I hope that the rest of the day goes well.
I hear you about stick shifts not being fun in traffic. Living in the Bay Area with a stick cured me from ever wanting to buy one again.

So jealous of your destination; the west coast is one of my favourite parts of the world! Made it to Hamburg safe & sound. North to Denmark tomorrow & then the adventure really starts for ds. Yay you’re home!!! Can’t wait to hear about your new digs. You say they’re small, if you need organization or purging info there are loads of us that would be happy to help.
It is my understanding when they breathe they that they are having an episode of motion sickness. We drove from San Antonio to Missouri with our pair, it was quite the experience. But occasionally this would be an issue so I would just hold them and keep them away from the windows. Except in the Ozarks at night. We rolled the windows down just a tiny bit and between the animal sounds and smells they were racing from sod to side window to window the entire time. It was really awesome seeing them so enthralled.
