I am seriously considering cutting my hair short. I have had it shoulder length or longer most of my life and I want a change. Almost every style I see is with straight hair. That would require a lot of work each morning and I really just want a wash and go kind of style. I have no idea what my hair will do when I cut it short. I don’t think it will be curly, but could certainly see it kinky or frizzy and that has me nervous. Any ideas or suggestions before I possibly do this? Also, I do not have a regular stylist so it would most likely be with someone new. Well, I did it and really kind of like it.

Cutting my hair short was the best hair decision I ever made. I've been growing it a little longer this last year and next spring it goes back short. I'm already tired of the maintenance.
Pinterest is full of short hairstyles. Just evaluate them for your hair type and shape of your face trying to find photos that match your features. Also look at TV or movies for styles. When I first cut my hair short, I took a videotape I'd made from a TV show to my stylist so she could see the actress whose hair I loved from several angles.
If you see someone in your area whose hair you love, ask who cuts it. I can't tell you how many times in that first couple of years of short hair that strangers asked me who my stylist is.

Have you looked on Pinterest for ideas on styles? I would look there and then search YouTube to find videos of people with your hair type to see how they style it.

The advantage is that hair grows. Do it now, in case it is not best and will have grown out for the holidays...
ETA: My hair looks best when short... Much easier to take care of.

I have looked at Pinterest and google images. It is very rare I find any kind of hairstyle I like no matter what length. I should have Friday off I may take a chance. I do know I want to go an actual local salon so if I like it, it will be easier to maintain.

Go to Pinterest, search ‘graduated bob’ and tell me that’s not the cutest haircut ever!
eta...not the radical ones with really long sides. The normal ones.

I cut my hair in a pixie a couple of months ago and I love it! It’s so easy to care for and feels more youthful on me than the mom bob I was wearing before. I spent a lot of time on Pinterest looking at photos of people with similar face shapes and hair textures as mine, and had a couple of good pictures to take to my stylist when I went in.
Short hair is trickier to cut than the usual longer styles - make sure you are comfortable that your stylist will spend the time to get your cut just right.

I have an appointment for Tuesday. I'm tempted to go very short and very blonde. I have worn my hair short since I was a kid. When I look for hairstyles on Pinterest I always search for short hair styles for round faces. Maybe try a search based on the shape of your face.

I took a videotape I'd made from a TV show to my stylist so she could see the actress whose hair I loved from several angles. That is such a GREAT idea !!!!!!! The different angles and seeing how the hair actually MOVES would make it much easier for the stylist to know whether it would work with a specific type of hair.

I cut my almost waist length hair last winter and now regret it. My hair just does not behave. Also, I was so spoiled in not having to "fix" my hair everyday. There were so many things I could do with my long hair but now it just hangs, crookedly at that.

I liked short hair for a minute and then regretted it. I wish I had tried a wig or something first. That said, many people love their hair short.

I have thick, curly hair that I have spent half my life trying to tame. Last autumn I had an undercut to take some of the weight out, and I had a lot of fun shaving shapes into. This summer I went pixie, and so far I love it. I wash it twice a week, towel dry and rub in some mousse/gel with a little serum and let it dry naturally, and then do literally nothing to it except fluffing it up a bit when I get out of bed in the mornings. It doesn't get blown into my eyes or my food. I don't have to tie it back.
I'm not sure how I'll feel about it when it gets colder and I have to wear scarves to keep my naked neck warm, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. ETA: this is the before and after photo, both taken on the same day.

I have had my hair super short for many years. Prior to that it was to my waist and then to my shoulders. I will never, ever go back to longer hair. Even though I have to flat-iron my hair, it seriously only takes me 10 minutes from wet hair to completion. It is SUPER fast to do! In fact, my daughter was in the bathroom the other day when I was doing my hair. She wanted to talk but that sometimes is hard to do with a blow dryer going so I asked her to hold on. I finished in 2 minutes with the blow dryer. She said "That's it?" I said "Yep, doesn't take long to blow dry this hair do." I have gotten my hair do down to a science. Really once you get used to it, it doesn't take any time at all. Take photos in to your stylist and see which one she thinks would work best for your hair type. I just screen shot photos from Pinterest and show my stylist when I want a bit of a change. Have fun!

RedSquirrelUK you are so cute For me, short hair takes more upkeep and I have to have it cut every 4 weeks to keep the style neat. I'm currently trying to grow mine out.

I cut my shoulder length hair in July and I love it! I have strange wavy/curly hair. I have worn it short in the past but it wasn't as curly and I used to use a curling iron to style it. Gosh, now that I think about it, that was a loooong time ago! I wanted my sides a little longer than they came out, but it's growing and I love it!
When my hair was long, it took so much more care. Now I can let it dry naturally and it has some curl or I can blow dry and straighten the sides in less than 10 minutes. My cut is similar to RedSquirrel. My dd was in cosmetology school and I used to let her die my hair ashy blonde so it would blend with the grey better as I grow it out. My ends were fried and I needed a change. Now the blonde ends look more natural (I was a brunette) and the gray is growing in nicely. I'm one of the rare people who want to grow out my gray.
I say give it a try! It's only hair and it'll grow back!

I do get mine cut every 3 weeks. I stretch it out to five weeks. That’s about how long I can go without touching up my roots, and it’s easier if I can do both at the same time.

Oh man, I could never do 5 weeks. I used to go 4 weeks but I am much happier with 3 weeks. I touch up roots every other time--so every 6 weeks on the roots. Works great.

I went super short and then funky. http://instagram.com/p/BQ-2QaCB9kz I get the shaved part cut every other week at the barber shop for $10. I am growing out the longer part for now. Right now, I am thinking about having it all bleached so I can do whatever color I want.

I was worried about the extra up-keep but mine still only gets cut every 6 weeks, the same as when it was bobbed. Curls help a lot, because it doesn't appear much longer as it grows. I'm only now realising how lucky I am. ETA: thank you! I meant to start with that and got distracted.

I'd be sure to talk to a stylist who knows your hair and you really trust before doing this. Hair does grow, but a really bad haircut sucks. Get their opinion on how your hair will be short and how much styling it will require. For me, short hair was WAY more work than longer hair is. I have fine, wavy/curly hair and it absolutely MUST be styled every day if it is short. The idea "wash and wear" is a total no-go for my hair when short - it will look awful. With longer hair, I can let it air-dry and with some salt spray and a good hair oil, the curl looks good and it's zero effort. And when I want to style it, of course I can. But I don't want to have to heat style my hair every day and that's what my hair needed when short.
FWIW, my stylist warned me about requiring daily styling and I was sure I'd be fine with it. The cut itself was good, but I underestimated how much I'd dislike styling every day, and how crappy I'd be at it lol

Thank you everyone for your input. I am still not 100% sure, but I do know I am ready for a change. Right now if I let my hair air dry it gets rather poofy. Not curly, just bigger. When it is humid I have no control over it.
I will continue to think it over and see what I can find.

I love short hair. I have naturally curly hair but when it's super short it's straight but has great body. I can blowdry my hair and maybe use a straightener on a few pieces. Run a bit of pomade through and a squirt of hairspray. Done in 3-5 mins! I had short hair for the last 15 years. Shaved on one side, or both, super short all over, long on one side. So fun to change it up all the time. You have to be realistic about your hair, how fine it is, how much you really have. So when you are looking at photos and say I want that a good hairdresser will say yes but you realize your hair is too xxx for that.

Last time I was seriously considering cutting my bra strap length hair, I put it in a pony tail and chopped it off with a pair of Fiskars scissors. I have no regrets (it's just above my shoulders), but I'm a shit or get off the pot kind of girl. I only pause if it's life changing, and hair is far from life changing, as long as it will grow back. Have some fun!

I have wavy hair, and it is awful to keep up with longer than I have it now. I was always frustrated when it was longer trying to keep up with it. Now I can literally sleep on it, wake up, comb through and go. I don't even have to wash it everyday anymore. I used to have to do that. Short is much better for me than long. But you have to know your hair and what works for you. Your stylist will be a great help!
