We came home and there were lights everywhere, we had to take a few mile roundabout to the back entrance to get home and when we looked to see what was happening they were saying that a man called from the street next to us saying he had shot this girlfriend and that there were two kids tied up in the laundry room that he would kill when the police arrived. They've been out there for a while and then it disappeared from the active call list and the guy that lives at the house said he talked to the police and had been swatted. The person who called it in used an internet number and made it look like it was from that address. I've never in my life heard such a thing. Who in the world does shit like this?

Something similar happened in Wichita KS. Someone from California called it in (I think they played online games together). The man who’s house was swatted ended up being shot and killed by police due to not cooperating and if I remember correctly, he had “something” in his hand. (Maybe a phone). The guy who called it in is charged with something like 2nd degree murder. Scary stuff!

That is awful. I'm not sure if they were rushing to release info or of this is also happening on pierce in Columbus. Sickening.

I’ve heard of several instances of online gaming foes doing this to one another. Some people suck. As seen above, it’s not a harmless prank, it can actually put lives in danger.

I've never heard that term, either. It is horrible. I had something happen to me back in the mid 80s when we lived in Central OH. DH was working overnight, so I was home alone, and awoke to pounding on my door. I went to answer it and there were 4 or 5 police cars surrounding our small apartment (it was a double). They said that I had called and stated that I was being harassed, but it wasn't me. I figured someone on the other side of town was getting away with something by calling all the cops to our place. I never heard anything about what that could have been about, either.

My husband works in online gaming, sadly this is something I've been aware of for a while.

That is awful. I will ask my daughter if she has seen it yet. She is on the bomb squad and goes out with all SWAT calls. All of hers that I know of have been real calls. That is terrible. I don't understand people. So sick!

I have never heard of this before, I will ask my DH if this is common around here. He works for a local PD.

I think the police are going after the initiator of the calls now. Perhaps a little prison time will convince them it is not so funny.

I have heard of this before. A couple years ago, there were a few local high schools that had gotten bomb threats. DD's high school included. They were all investigated and found to be swatting by some kid in the UK. It took awhile, but they eventually found him and arrested him. No idea what the reason was behind it.

My daughter said that she has never heard of it. So, at least it's not in her area or ours. Truly awful that people think of this stuff.

Glad to hear everyone is alright.
This happened about a year ago in the very small town where I grew up. The situation ended with no injuries. It was attributed to online gaming.

I've heard of emergency calls being hoaxes, but I'd never heard it called 'swatting.' What a heinous thing to do.

This has happened to a coworker who lives in my neighborhood. Also related to on-line gaming and his daughter. It has happened more than once and then they had the police calling him first before responding to the calls. It was so bad that they actually moved. Not just the police calls, but they would get every pizza place in town delivering pizza all at the same time. Weird stuff like that. The worse case (and probably the breaking point for them) was when they were not home, but their daughter was and the police swat team had the place surrounded and she was under her bed scared that she might get shot. She called her dad who was on his way home and he called the police. When he got there he let them all in to checkout the place. Scary, stupid stuff.

How AWFUL !!! I've never heard of this !!! I read every reply, and have a question----online gaming is mentioned a lot. WHY are the victims giving out their addresses to random people they only know online ? Something similar happened in Wichita KS. Someone from California called it in (I think they played online games together). The man who’s house was swatted ended up being shot and killed by police due to not cooperating and if I remember correctly, he had “something” in his hand. (Maybe a phone). The guy who called it in is charged with something like 2nd degree murder. Scary stuff! Wow.....I cannot even imagine! This guy's poor family has lost him because of a stupid prank?

This is so dangerous! I hope the person responsible is arrested and gets more than a slap on the wrist. People have been killed during these situations, not to mention the waste of law enforcement resources.

Google "swatting" and you'll see numerous instances in recent years.
I don't think people are necessarily giving out their addresses. If someone can figure out your identity, they can figure out where you live.

Swatting has been happening for quite some time. More than a decade, actually. Swatting was recognized by the FBI in 2008. I'm honestly surprised there are so many who've not heard of it.
It has certainly gone more hi-tech, however, and I support making swatting a felony. First degree murder if someone dies as a result.

Sad unintelligent immature people w/nothing better to do and/or no better ideas on how to contribute positively to life.
It's only going to get worse until we stop being so unequal and use more money to hire more people to help more people.

This happened in my town about a year ago. Our police worked with Boston PD and they found out who made the call and she was arrested.
