We’ve had some big changes around here in the past week!
DH had been looking for a permanent gig for the past 2 years. He’d had 2 false starts, one a scam and one that ended with no warning when the department head changed. Each time we’ve been so excited only to be disappointed within 2 months. He’s had tons of phone interviews and many 1st and 2nd in person interviews. He even had 1 Fortune 500 company come back to the recruiter and tell them he was their choice and they would be making an offer asap...and then they kept coming back and saying they were working on the offer and it was imminent.
While waiting, DH continued to work for our company and go on interviews. He interviewed for one job and thought it had gone well, but I think he was surprised when they asked him for 2 more interviews in just a few days. They made an offer within a week of the first contact and he accepted. THEN the real fun began!
The company is an IT consulting company, and we own an IT consulting company, so DH had to divest himself of his shares in our company and can no longer work for us. This was hard to swallow, since we’ve had this company for 30+ years. I had to gift DD a percentage of the company to remain a partnership. The new company wants to put DH on a client site permanently, which meant DH had to go thru a huge background check to work with this client. We’ve worked for the CDC before and this background check put that one shame. For a while , I wondered if they were looking for a reason NOT to honor the offer.
But on Weds, he started his new job!!!! WWWooooTTTT!!
As it turned out, the location he is going to be working at is not the one that the company originally told him. While this one is further away, it’s actually easier to get to because he doesn’t have to go thru the city. He also found out that they don’t work 8-5 with an hour for lunch. They seem to go in about 9:30 and work until 5:30-6, and lunch counts as a working hour. He was told that anytime his work could be done remotely, he should do it remotely. The actual work is something he has done before, though not on this scale, and he is really confident about it. He is so excited!
I have been working on a new contract for a company I have been working with off and on for a year. This contract was just for me to cover while others were on vacation, but I had recently had a conversation with the director and had let them know I was very open to something more permanent. The contract was just supposed to be until the vacationers returned and a new person on boarded. I found out Weds. that they would like me to continue working with an open ended contract with a guaranteed 2 weeks notice. They offered me the ability to work an average of 40 hours a week with more or less as needed, rather than locking me into an absolute number. This is an advantage to me as it lets me finish jobs when I’ve started them rather than forcing me to stop at a set time. I am ecstatic, to say the least.
The icing on the cake? DH’s newest numbers for his kidneys were good. Not fabulous, but better rather than worse. So far, he’s held steady or improved slightly for the past 2 years. His kidney dr is hopeful that he may be able to stay at this stage for a couple more years. With the progress being made in kidney research, a couple of years could be enough to hold him until new research is available. I am hopeful that having the stress of job hunting off his shoulders will help even more.
So, for us, last week was a turning point, hopefully for the better, for our family. I just wanted to share!
