I'm trying to get my home spotless before my next eye surgery on the 5th, so I decided to clean out the entire refrigerator. I've done it a million times and I'm usually careful. I take out the food, carefully take out the shelves and bins and glass and clean. I let the glass parts reach room temp and wash them in warm soapy water. Fine... I have the big glass shelf in my gloved hands and it broke into almost a glitter of Glass!!
I didn't hit it, didn't drop it and didn't use hot water. I've never seen anything like this. There were barely any pieces of glass; only mounds of glittery glass everywhere!! I was barefoot and didn't have my eyeglasses on (dumb!!!!), but luckily I was okay!!
It took hours to sweep it all up, vacuum it, sweep/vacuum a few more times and then wash my floor, counters, etc... All I could think of was how lucky I was not to get hurt!! I also thought that a 30 minute job wound up being a job that took hours to clean! I'm waiting for maintenance to bring replacement glass.
Wondering if this ever happened to anyone??

I have had it happen to me. Didn't break into that fine of pieces though.

So glad you are okay, especially that none got in your eyes!
I have taken mine out a lot to clean, never even thought about letting it come to room temp before putting it in super hot water though so thank you for bringing that to my attention.

Was all that glittery glass at least pretty? That truly is a freak accident. So glad you weren't hurt.

You name it and I’ve managed to break it. I have never seen glittery glass like you describe though. It is sooo frustrating when those short jobs turn into hours long ones!
Hope all goes well with your surgery.

How freaky! So glad you weren't hurt. I've never heard of glass shelves breaking for no apparent reason. Yikes.

Glad you were not hurt. Like you I leave the shelves out to come to room temperature before trying to wash them. I don't know what else you could have done. Just seems to be one of those freak things.

Wow! I would be leery of the replacement for sure. That kind of glass is not supposed to do that. Sounds like you had an inferior type of glass in there, not saying you put it in but that you were slighted somewhere about that glass. That could have been so dangerous.
So glad you are not hurt. It really sucks to have to clean up glass like that. I always seem to miss some no matter how careful I am.

We've had the pyrex shatter in the oven, but never the glass refrigerator shelf breaking. Glad you weren't hurt at all.

It's never happened to me, but I've heard of it happening. I'm glad you weren't hurt, though it really sucks that you had to clean it all up.

Years ago my sister was cleaning the inside of a coffee carafe. She removed her hand and the inside imploded. Sounded like an explosion.

It's tempered glass. I often get calls about this on cars, a back glass will explode unexpectedly. What most likely happened is that there was already a small nick somewhere in the past on the glass. It could have happened putting a jar there, or even as far back as when it was manufactured. Taking the glass and moving it may have caused it to finally put enough pressure on it to explode. Tempered glass is under pressure, that's what makes it strong.
Now imagine doing what you did, only with a full 7' shower door. yep, that was scary as hell. Plus my husband (the glass man) didn't have his shoes on either! I only had on keds or flip flops. It was so scary.

Yikes! So glad you are okay. Sounds like an absolute mess!
I've never taken my pieces out of the fridge. I take all the food out, and just clean it inside the fridge. Never had any problems, but that doesn't mean it can't happen!

I am so happy that you are okay. That sounds awful. That happened years ago to my DH with a Pyrex baking dish and he was badly cut. I ended up calling a sitter and rushing him to the ER.

This is why I'm on the hunt for vintage Pyrex now and refuse to buy the newer stuff. The thought of it exploding terrifies me!

So glad you are okay.
I never had anything like that happen, but I did have a freak accident with a glass lid to a pan. I had made shrimp scampi for dinner and was waiting for my hubby to come up for dinner. I put a glass lid to a pan on top of the bowl and within seconds it crumbled into a mound of glass all INTO THE BOWL of my dinner!
peanut butter and jelly was then on the menu!

Not my fridge but one day we woke up to a loud noise and when we went to inspect found that the glass in the oven door had fallen out and broken in to a billion tiny pieces. The oven was not turned on so still a mystery of what caused it to fall.

I've had a shelf shatter in my hands, but never fine pieces like that. More the same that a car window would shatter.

Thanks for your comments & kindness.
Yes, it made an exploding sound and just crumbled into glittery dust. tMaybe here was a Nick in it but I usually look it over carefully.
I always bring it to room temp and I thought you're not supposed to use hot water on it; only warm.
I have had 3 Pyrex dishes explode, but they broke into shards, not dust like this. We replaced ours (from Walmart) with one's DH found in Salvation Army (PYREX all in caps--I know th e difference now!), or I'll use my corning ware and to broil, I use my safe roasting pans.
I wasn't aware of windows breaking in cars. Surprised that it doesn't happen in this extreme heat down here, especially when we turn the a/c on full blast. We open the windows for 1 minute first though.
Just a good reminder about safety: we all should wear protective Eyewear when we're cleaning glass or cooking with glass.
In all of the responses, I'm surprised that this never happened before, so I'll investigate the refrigerator type and see if there were recalls about the glass shelving. I never thought that the replacement glass might be just as dangerous, but we've lived here for 8 years and this never happened before.
As far as taking everything out and cleaning it in the refrigerator, I try to do it every 3-6 months. I thought everyone does it. Once you do it, you can see how icky it could get in places you'd never see unless you totally empty it.
Thanks, all!!!
