I think I am going to call my vet and ask for an Rx for my dog. She is a breeder rescue (Golden Retriever) who we have had for 2 years. She’s come a looooong way, but she is still terrified of being outside, and even at home she is very jumpy, and retreats to the bedroom constantly, as our bed is her safe zone. We tried Prozac a year ago and it was not good at all...we couldn’t get through the 6 week ‘rough period’ to see if it would work. DH vowed “no meds”, but I am to the point where I feel her quality of life could be better if she wasn’t afraid all the time. We have tried obedience classes more than once, and have tried CBD’s without any success.
So, please share with me your experience with anxiety meds, if you would. I need reassurance this is the right decision. Thanks!

We put our heeler on anxiety meds (Prozac) a few months ago and I wish we had done it years ago. It has not fundamentally changed her personality, but it seems to allow her to not get so anxious quite so quickly, so she can still follow commands (and doing that helps her feel even more secure - she wants a job).
It’s been a great choice for us and our dog. She is happier on meds.

My cat has been on Prozac for years -- we call it the miracle drug.
My dog has slowly been getting worse and worse anxiety from thunderstorms over the last year or so. It was to the point where she'd be peeing and shaking in the shower if it got cloudy! We've tried three meds that didn't help, and finally got her on Xanax which does. I only give it to her when thunderstorms are expected, though.
One of the meds that didn't do anything for my dog was Melatonin. It works as an anti-anxiety med for some dogs, and has no side effects. It might be worth a shot.

Oh yes, we did try melatonin also. No luck there. The Prozac made her super duper mopey and withdrawn, so we d/c’d that after 2 weeks. I know there are other options though, so I think we need to at least try and see if we can get her some help.

We have a prescription for trazodone for 4th of July and other horror shows. We don't usually give it for a passing thunderstorm, but we do give it if there's a storm when we're traveling. The poor pup literally runs in circles from sheer panic.
It makes her a bit sleepy/lethargic, but she's able to function (eat, go for a walk, etc.)
