I had no idea about this area--it is so damaged by the first WW that people are still forbidden to go there.

I’ve just shown this to DH as we have travelled extensively around France including the areas surrounding the Red Zone and neither of us were aware of this, despite, particularly in his case, a knowledge of and interest in WWI. We will both be looking further into it, thank you.

I teach my students about it each year. The people in charge of "déminage" stay quite busy and they think it will take about 500 years at the current rate to clear it all out.

There’s a red zone showing between Compiegne and Soissons, we’ve been on holiday at that exact place around 6 times and have never heard of Zone Rouge. We got to a campsite La Croix du Vieux Pont. The Clariére de l’Armistice is down the road towards Compiégne which is visited by thousands every year.
