Our kids' rooms are small so we're interested in affordable but efficient closet storage solutions so we can get rid of their dressers. What do you use?

Not just my bedroom closet, but almost every single closet in our house including pantry, linen, laundry room and garage. ELFA from The Container Store. It is not inexpensive at the outset, but it saves tons of money over time. I still have every piece since I first started buying it when I was 19, so 27 years ago. I use all but 2 very short shelves but I have them in case I have use for them again. It has moved with me/us at least a dozen times and been reconfigured just as many. When they make updates to the system they make sure the old product can be used seamlessly with the new. The quality is second to none as far as these types of systems. It is super easy to install and reconfigure and they have excellent staff to help you determine what you need. You don’t put tons of holes in your walls, just install the piece along the top of the wall and everything else hangs off of and it holds a ton of weight per linear foot. I love the different options available for this line, they aren’t there with other similar products. Especially the different shelf widths and drawer depths and widths. I almost exclusively buy it on sale, it is 25% off right now, it goes on sale 30% off in January or February I believe. I am hoping to have an enlarged entry closet to outfit with Elfa by then.

How big are just the closets?
My bedroom is tiny, and has a shallow closet.
I have a Sterilite 3 drawer plastic storage drawers at the bottom of the closet, to hold underthings.
Then there is one rod to hold hangers.
Then a shelf directly above the for to put folded clothes.

bump. Elfa is definitely way out of our budget. No matter how much it's worth it, we simply can't afford it. Especially with 3 closets to do. We've been looking at closetmaid at home depot. Is that probably the most economical that includes drawers?

Have you an IKEA anywhere near you? I'm in the UK but I've used them in Asia and Australia as well. They also have storage systems like Elfa. I haven't compared the prices but IKEA are affordable, and we have pieces that we've bought in Asia, shipped to Australia and back to the UK and they haven't fallen apart.

This is also what we use. I really like that you can reconfigure the layout if needed (though in 15 yrs ours has stayed the same), and take with you if you move (though we've been here 30+yrs and probably not going anywhere). In my craft room and DHs office we used the less expensive Rubbermaid shelving. I prefer the ELFA shelving, but have not had any issues with either system.

Our master bedroom closet has built-in shelving with one half column of drawers and hanging rods on each side but the way it’s configured doesn’t really work well for how we prefer to store our clothes. DH’s side has two half height rods (that he doesn’t use) with a shelf in between that he has his stuff stacked on. My side also has two half height rods that I don’t use with a shelf in between that my stuff is stacked on and one full length rod that we both have our hanging stuff hung on. For how much closet space we have, it’s a dumpster fire and we both need to go through everything that’s in there, purge some stuff and reorganize.
If I had my way, I would have my shelf guy come back and redo the whole thing to make it more functional for how we want to use the space. I was really surprised by how affordable it was to have him make over our main floor closet into a functional mud room. I think we paid $1100 to add an entire 9’ wall of floor to ceiling shelving, two rows of coat hooks, cubbies and a bench. Something like that, minus the bench and adding some drawers, would be perfect for us in our master. We need more shelving and virtually no rods for hanging clothes since those things could go in the 8’x10’ cedar closet out in the hall between DD’s bedroom and the main second floor bath.

We have used the ClosetMaid ShelfTrack system in our closets. We were able to buy both the kits and individual pieces to get the configuration we wanted. The shelves are easy to adjust and install. There are options like baskets and shoes racks too.
Elfa products were not in our budget and we are happy with the how the closet functions and the cost.

At my old house that we built in 2010, we put the Rubbermaid Closet systems in 3 closets. They worked great and could be reconfigured if needed. When we got divorced and I moved earlier this year, I left the closet systems where they were.
My current bedroom has a shallow long closet that I hate the doors on!! I'm not sure what to put up instead. But if I take the doors off, I could maybe organize it a lot better. Sorry to hijack but does anyone have any ideas what to replace the doors with? Curtains maybe??

You could make the style of door(s) and hardware fit a lot of different decorating styles, and also have access to the middle of the closet for organization purposes.

This looks like it might be easy-ish if you have someone that knows anything about wood working. I'm thinking of modifying it for my craft room closet and considering it for dd's closet.

We have a barn door on our bedroom closet at the lake cabin and I LOVE it! I like that it slides all the way over and completely out of the way if we want to move anything big in or out.

My craft table is made from recollections cubes 😁 I made the wheeled base for it.

My room is not big at all. The current doors are the 2 sliding doors, so similar to barn doors but they are the old closet doors on the track inside the door frame. There's not enough wall space on either side of the closet for actual barn doors. I wish. I may just take the doors off and leave them off. It's only me in there, so who cares. And I pretty much keep my things neat and organized. Thank you for your help.

how small are rooms that you can't even fit a dresser? that's small! if their rooms are small, then their closets probably are too. a closet system should be fairly affordable for a small closet.
if not that then i have made great use of closet space with those stackable closet organizers and sterlite drawers. just figure out your space, what need s to be stored and use every square inch to the ceiling. but once you buy all that you might have paid a good portion of what a "real" closet organizer might have cost. you can make the stacking closet organizers go farther by using them as the sides and then putting shelves between them.

I think they're something like 10 x 15? The dressers fit-they are in there now and they've been using them. But if they want a desk or something it's just too crowded. The closets are about 6.5' wide by about 2'.

They're sliding doors so you only have half of the opening accessible at any time. If the organizer has drawers, which is what she wants/needs, then it'll be hard to open them unless they're perfectly lined up with the opening. Which isn't likely.

I cringe at the thought of trying to cut/lug bigger boards. Even so I'm going to check out the plans linked here and at Ana White's website.
