With all the body imagining issues of late, I would not use the words heavy set. Would using the word of large stature get around that?
Nice letter. Thanks for sticking up for this innocent person and possibly educating a clueless employee.

Could you pop by the store and get his name? Perhaps put your watch in your purse. Go up to the register and ask for the time then get his name. You could also describe the clothing he was wearing. Send the e-mail all the way to corporate headquarters. Is it possible to get a copy of your receipt through the store or your credit card company?

Hispanic is a made-up word invented by the Nixon administration for use during the 1970 census. I prefer Latino. I haven’t asked my half-Latino children what they prefer, but we should have that talk.

My BIL fits the description of your checker and refers to himself as having a large build.
Thank you for standing up for humanity. We all need to step up, every chance we get.

Thanks for sending a letter. Bartell used to be a nicer drug store with good customer service, now you may as well go to Rite Aid and pay less for your purchases since there’s no reason to go to a Bartell’s anymore.

Honestly, I don’t think the description of the cashier is needed at all except for “male”. Put the date and approx time like you have and they can search the tapes or the register log. Since your complaint is their racial profiling, this going to the wrong person could have the response “she hates fat people so she did the same thing by profiling him by his description” and go nowhere.
While he needs to be spoken to directly, because the person he called over didn’t react it’s apparent the entire store should have additional training.

I think your revised letter is great.
I thank the peas for educating me about the word Hispanic, I will be sure to use the word Latino from now on. I had used them interchangeably, but will now just use Latino.
I appreciate all the things I learn here, honestly, I feel like everyday I learn something from you guys.

The revised letter is perfect. Let us know if you get a response. I would hope they would be horrified at what you experienced and reply that they'll be conducting sensitivity training or something. My 'glass-half-full' wish is that they were told to be on the look out for a man fitting his description (perhaps this other man was a known shoplifter or something) and the reality is the cashier was in the right to call security but should have been far more careful about what he says in front of customers. But even I know that wishful thinking is a longshot

Thanks girls. Hispanic changed to Latino, and the description of the cashier no longer describes his height or build. I appreciate your help getting this right. And sent.

Both the Bartells by me are fine, so I’m surprise to hear from you and others that they’ve gone downhill. I would like to keep my prescriptions there since I can walk over to pick them up in my neighborhood’s business district. My other option is CVS or the pharmacy at QFC, but I’d have to drive or bus there.

Hi all, just a little update. I received the following reply to my email from the district manager. Hopefully he means what he said:
Thank you for brining this situation to my attention. I will be reviewing your comments about your experience with the store manager and the clerk involved and will address appropriately.
At Bartells we have a very diverse environment in both our workforce and our customer base and we do not condone any situations that could be considered profiling in our stores at any time.
Thank you again for bringing this to my attention so that I can correct this immediately.
Please contact me directly if I can be of any further assistance to you.

I am glad they responded quickly and in this manner. I am a frequent Bartells customer and have always had good customer service with the store employees as well as the pharmacy staff. Interesting about the comment about shopping at Rite Aid...something about those stores is very off-putting to me. Not sure if it is the smell, floor layout or what but I much prefer Bartells.
