www.cnn.com/2019/08/21/us/detroit-dogs-kill-girl-wednesday/index.htmlHorrific Absolutely gut-wrenching. "Emma was riding her bike near her home in Southwest Detroit on Monday when the dogs escaped from the neighbor's yard and attacked her, the station reported. A week earlier, her father, Armando Hernandez, had an argument with the dogs' owner about better fencing for the dogs, Emma's aunt Claudia Stapleton told the news station. "They didn't do anything," Stapleton said. "

Omg, how horrific. That poor family. I hope the owners of the dogs are held accountable.

I hope the dog owner serves jail time and is banned from ever owning a pet again.

Oh that poor girl. I can't imagine how terrifying her last moments were And her parents are probably filled with guilt though all they did was let her play outside on her own block.

I hope the dog owner serves jail time and is banned from ever owning a pet again. Same here. But there are no charges yet. I fear this is an instance where the punishment will NOT fit the horror.

The poor family - I just can't even imagine what they would be going through. Especially if there had been words about better fencing needed.
The dog owners are totally irresponsible in this case.

So sad and scary. I do not like dogs, especially big dogs. I go to too many homes where the dogs are always jumping, barking, growling, etc. Last spring our neighbor boy (9 years old at the time) came over to our house screaming. He apparently had fallen on their dog (who up to that point had always seemed calm and nice to me) and the dog bit him in the lip, taking chunks out of the top and bottom lip. People don't seem to remember that dogs are animals, and will act like animals. They kept the dog, blaming the bite on the kid falling on it. Seems to me that if that something like that (tripping on the dog) could happen at any time.

Oh my! This is truly heartbreaking!
I can't imagine the rage the father has for the neighbor. He's probably safer in custody.

I guessed it would be pit bulls---and sure enough, that breed was the breed of the guilty dogs.

I can't imagine how hard it must be for your neighbor boy to see that dog every day and have to live in fear of it, knowing the parents kept it. {{shudder}} I hope the dog owner in Detroit is charged with involuntary manslaughter and serves some time.

I think it's time to remind people before we bash dog breeds that 97% of fatal dog bites are caused by unneutered males. They are 2.6x as likely to attack as a female in general.

There are way too many irresponsible pet owners.

This is such a horrible story. I can't imagine the pain and horror that poor girl must have gone through in the last few minutes of her life. I am disgusted and furious at the dog owner for his negligence and disregard towards his dogs, the fencing and the safety of the neighbors. It is through his actions (or non-actions) that this sweet, innocent girl lost her precious life. He needs to be held accountable and charged with the highest penalty possible, including never owning another pet again. My hope would be involuntary manslaughter with a long prison sentence.

I love all dogs, but have a very healthy respect for pit bulls (actually any breed that is capable of killing me). I have met the nicest pit bulls and the meanest of mean chihuahuas. I wish owners of all dogs would make sure that their dogs are secured. We had a sweet doberman, but I knew she made people nervous, so she was always on the leash and in a fenced yard.

SECURE and TRAIN your dogs. Regardless of the breed. And I agree, spaying or neutering is a necessity unless you are a responsible breeder/show owner (and if you are, then you already train your dog appropriately).

The owner should be held accountable. There should be justice. I would like to see it made mandatory that our average house dogs are to be spayed/neutered. And not just from a safety standpoint, but as a softie on irresponsible breeding and the overwhelming number of unwanted pets. And, I will be the first to put down a dog that shows aggression. I don't care if it's a pitbull or a chihauhua. I just think we need to center this discussion on what we can do, as owners of animals, to ensure safety in our homes and neighborhoods. And I'd like to see all animals spayed/neutered as a starting point.

Why is it that we blame the dog instead of the owner? Dogs are not born vicious - any breed. People make them vicious.
So sad for this little girl whose death is on the people who allowed these dogs to become a menace.

I was just doing some research and saw one article that said that in 2017 74% of fatal dog attacks were by pit bulls. I would be interested in knowing more about the training of these dogs, and if training actually works. The pit bulls I have been in contact with were not pleasant at all, whether they had been trained or not. There also seems to be mixed info about whether or not neutering increases or decreases aggression.

The pit bulls I have been in contact with were not pleasant at all, whether they had been trained or not. There also seems to be mixed info about whether or not neutering increases or decreases aggression. I have a spayed female. We have had her from 8 months old and she turns 8 years on saturday. When my husband suggested we adopt her, I said no. Because pitbull. He visited her 2-3 times a week for 2 months. I finally did some research that quelled my fears. We met with a behavourist and our five children and the dog before adopting. At the time we owned 2 cats and our youngest child was 2 years old. I felt confident when we brought her home. We did normal dog training. She never showed aggression toward our children or our cats. Our cats died. We adopted a 4 year old cat who can be a bitch. Our dog has never showed aggression. We adopted a.kitten. Amelia and the kitten became best of friends. And last Christmas my DD brought home a 2.5 lb teacup chihuahua that was 8 weeks old. I thought for sure if anything would trigger Amelia, it would be him. But he doesnt. He's been with us now for a year and a half and he's kind of a jerk sometimes. But she is great with him. He's full grown 4.9 lbs. She weighs 71 lbs. She is my only experience. And maybe she's a gem, but she's a great dog. She is smart. Well trained. Loving. We have always respected the fact that if she wanted to, she could do serious damage. But I would be 110% shocked if she did. ETA: I respect the kind of damage a dog her size can do. We are always on alert and have been since day 1.
