I thought this Washington Post Article was an interesting read on tipping during travel. I have tried to be better about tipping at hotels, since we are a party of 6. But $10 a day was more than I expected.

Most of my hotel stays are business related (we tend to get vacation rentals otherwise, so no daily housekeeping), so it’s just me and I’m barely in the room. I tip $5/day.

I always tip, but not $10.
It's typically just me. ALL my things are always put away, I don't leave anything on countertops, desks, or nightstands. Covers are pulled up on the bed, towels rehung on the towel bar, trash in the trash can. I tip $3-$5 a day depending on what kind of cash I have onhand on any given day.

I don’t tip because we always leave the do not disturb sign the whole time so they never come into our room until we’ve gone to prepare for next guest. And we aren’t messy- it’s just the typical things they would do.

I cleaned rooms when I was younger. I was occasionally tipped a dollar or two. It was nice but never expected. I usually tip now, but not $10. I don't like being told how much to tip. If housekeeping needs more for wages, the hotels should adjust the price of the rooms accordingly.

I would never tip $10/day because, depending on the length of stay, we MAY only have them come in once to clean, if at all. I would do $5 for the last day.

I should add...that while I have 4 kids. We always leave all the towels that need to be replaced in the tub, hang everything else. Make sure the floors are picked up and put all the kids extra blakets/stuffies in the pack and play so they aren't in the way for bed making. I make sure all garbage is the in the cans and ready to be taken out. I try to remember to tip $5 a day. But I agree with the comment above about building that into the price. When we were at Disney World it annoyed me that I was having to tip (I did it because I realize it is important for the cleaners) when we were paying $500 plus a night for the room.

I don’t tip, my husband does. Definitely not $10 a day or even close, just a few dollars when we leave. I believe companies need to pay their employees, I am already paying the hotel the amount they asked of me. If I request something I tip when it’s brought to me. We all provide some kind of service in our jobs so we all should get tipped or not.

We often just keep the Do Not Disturb sign out as well. So in that case I tip at the end of our stay, usually just a night or weekend and I leave $5. However we stayed for a little while in Boulder and decided to have them come in one day. I forgot to hang my lounge clothes up when we left the room, they were on the bed. So they didn’t make the bed. Is that typical?

I always tip (not $10 a day, more like $5 a day) and I do it each day. I do that because I would imagine it is not always the same person each day, so I like to make sure the person there gets the tip the day they clean.
My daughter's team went to nationals in Disney World in January. Five girls in one room and I am quite sure they were not neat! I sent extra money with her so she could tip each day as they were going out for the day. She did and not one other girl in the room had ever heard of tipping, so of course we were the only ones that left money, but at least they got something.

We generally tip $5 a day if they come in to our room, but we keep our room clean. I think it's rude to leave your room a mess. If they happen to come by while we are in the room, we just bring them our trash cans and dump it in the bin, then tell them to skip our room.

eeek. I’ve been tipping $3/day. (I’m very neat and don’t want my sheets changed daily. Towels, yes.) But I guess I’d better up it to $5. It ain’t the ’80s anymore. I’m not ready for $10/day yet, though.

We tip at least $10/day, but that’s for 2 rooms . We keep our rooms neat, some days we just ask for towels & tp. I know it’s not required, but I’m already spending money left & right while I’m on vacation, a small daily tip is really nothing & not even missed by us. And, I think the staff really appreciates it.

I feel like a cheapo now I usually give three bucks a day but for my defense it’s usually in the Caribbean ,in the USA we travel in our Motorhome . I truly believe that tipping is out of control but seriously if you make my bed and clean my bathroom I’m going to give you something.

I tip once upon leaving. I leave the do not disturb sign up for my whole stay. I don't like the idea of housekeeping coming and going while my stuff is in the room.

My husband laughs at me because I am always picking up our hotel rooms. He is Mr. Things Strewn All About and I am the opposite. Our rooms usually require regular cleaning (bed, towels, etc.), but they're not messy or dirty. I usually tip $5 or $10 per day of our stay.
We also make sure to tell our kids how hard the housekeeping staff works to keep things nice for families like ours. We took our annual Legoland/beach vacation a few weeks ago, and our 6 year old was so polite to the staff that they brought him a special little Lego set. As we walked out of our room for breakfast one day, he saw the housekeeping staff and said, "thank you all for working so hard to clean our messes."
Later that day, there was a mini set on his pillow with a note - "for the nicest boy in the hotel." It was signed by the head of housekeeping and the manager. A little kindness goes a long way. It's sad how many people treat the support staff at hotels like they are invisible.

We tip $3-$5 per night - except on Holidays we'll leave $10. We travel for Thanksgiving every year so we always tip extra that day and get the limited service option. They always ask at check in if it's ok to just empty trash and leave towels or do we need the full service.

We tip at least $5 a day. Too many of these people are paid minimum wage and work hard.
