What they could pay for is what they got. That's what I got too... (actually my ex bought me an older car. We dated while I was still in HS)

Because we know that my dd(16) is going to be going away to college we bought her a 2018 Ford Explorer. We wanted something roomy for when she moves back and forth and safe. Warranty was a big thing with us because she is planning on being far away so went with new. Price was ok also because she is already getting scholarships as a Jr in HS.

We bought a 2013 VW Jetta for under your price. I think we’ve had zippy for 3 years now and it’s a great car for her. She is now 20 and takes great care of that car. It’s actually a family car, but she drives it the most

Not a thing! My almost 18yo still doesn't have his drivers license. He Ubers everywhere or rides with friends (I give that friend some money for gas). The cost of insurance here for a teenage boy is ridiculous, so Uber is by far the cheaper option. Plus his grades are not at a place I think they need to be to warrant that much of an expense. We live in town, so uber trips are never more than 10 bucks. His school is less than a mile from my office, so I drop off and pick up, or he will take the city bus to get there, and the school can't accommodate a parking spot for everyone.
He just doesn't really seem to care about driving that much and I'm happy to not have to pay!

My kids had to buy their own cars since we don't have money for that. My youngest bought a rusty 2004 Civic with 160,000 miles and no A/C for $1,200 bucks last summer. Running great yet!

15k on a used car for a 16 year old. Count your blessings 🙂 I'm embarrassed to answer.

DS wanted a project truck. So we got him a 1995 Chevy 1500. Needed some work. It was about 8 months before he turned 16. Him and dh worked on it. By the time he got his license, it looked great. Then on the way to school last Nov, him and dd were rear ended. It bent the frame and totaled the truck. We got a good price from the insurance company and we’re able to replace it with a bigger truck.
DD will be 16 next June. She is wanting an older Mustang, think 2008 (V6). Dh says if there is one in her price range ($4500) it might happen. I’m hoping she’ll change her mind by then. She will have 2 more years of driving to the cheer gym, 45 mins away. We’ll see. I’m her defense, she has grown up around cars and appreciates a good muscle car.

When DS turned 16, his grandpa sent him money for a car. He test drove cars in his price range and bought the one he liked. I liked that the new car had more advanced safety features than DH’s and mine.

My 16 year old is now almost 29 and still doesn’t have a license. So no car needed. I didn’t get a car until I bought one myself at 25. We both made do.

My son got a 2011 Honda Civic and my daughter got a 2011 Mazda 3. The Honda came from an auction (we had connections for a good price). The Mazda he got off of Craigslist and hit the jackpot. Owner had every single service record on the car and it only had 50K miles. Make sure you run the report where you enter the VIN number and any accident history will come up. If you know what you are doing you can find a car that is at a good price point and reliable. It might take a little time for the right car to come up, but it is doable. Use Kelly Blue Book as well.

My oldest will probably get my 2007 Accord and I’ll get a new car then, the younger one will probably get their dad’s 2009 Accord. I will consider a newer car for them for college when the time comes but until then the adults get the nice new cars. LOL we are told we are mean and cheap but I’m happier to give the kid the 15 year old car in case they smack it into things.

We just bought our 17 year old a little yellow VW beetle. It wasn't my first choice and I'm actually surprised my husband thought it was a good idea. She is an excellent student and super hard worker though. More than that, she's incredibly responsible and trustworthy. She is very deserving, in my mom opinion.
She used to take my Honda Pikot when needed. She leads an afterschool community service project at an animal shelter and the group all carpools together from school. Now that she's no longer restricted to just one other teenager as a passenger, she won't be driving anywhere with seven other girls. Three passengers seems like a much better idea to me!

2005 Toyota Corolla. He’s 6’5” but managed to adjust the seat and make it work! This is our first check when car shopping...will DH fit? As it stands he has to get a car with driver’s seat that adjusts up and down and out it all the way down. Then the seat goes all the way back. And then he leans the seat really far back so his head doesn’t sit too close to the ceiling. It is a PITA to get in the passenger seat after him because you are practically laying down in the back seat!

Our 17 year old, who's 6'4" tall & wears a size 14 shoe (& still growing), drives my old (2010) MB E350 sedan on which he learned to drive & has ample head, leg, & foot room!

DS got our 8 year old Honda CRV when he turned 17. He didn’t bother to get his license until then. When he went away to college 2 years later, he traded with his dad and is now driving a 2010 Outback. We didn’t feel comfortable with him making 7 hour drives to and from college with a car with over 100,000 miles and the Outback has better safety ratings as well.

He just got his license this week! He is now proudly driving a 2004 Audi A4. It is is in great condition and only cost about $3000. We planned to get him a much newer car but a family member offered this to us. $1000 of the cost was having it transported to us.

The oldest has a 2009 Honda CRV that we got with extremely low mileage. The younger one just got her license a month ago and has no car yet - she also needs a college-level viola and they are as expensive as a car, so we’re weighing options.

Ds has a Ford Fusion. He started with a truck and wanted something smaller. Lots of big trucks and SUVs around here and he does fine. Our biggest requirement was that is was AWD
Eta: he is 6'4

An impeccably cared for, well-maintained, 2002 Mazda Tribute. She LOVED it and it was safe and 4wd. The engine died after 4 months of driving it for unknown reasons; the mechanic is perplexed. It will cost me far more to replace that I paid for it. She’s pretty bummed. She now understands how much of a money pit cars are. She’s driving a borrowed car for the time being until I figure it out.

Our son bought his own from money he'd been saving from Christmas and birthdays plus little odds and ends jobs like mowing the neighbors lawn. He started working 2 weeks before he turned 16 and saved all that and had enough 2 months later for a down payment on a 2008 Mercury Mariner (bought in 2016). We did not help him buy it. We wanted him to feel/have the responsibility in hopes that because it was his money/his car, he might be more careful with it and with driving. In May he traded it in and bought himself a brand new 2019 Ford Escape (he's only 19) so he's doing well considering his age! I liked that his first and now cars are both SUVs for safety. Thats all I drive also.

The driving age here is 14 so she had a Ford Fusion. I kept thinking about that car in an accident and decided we needed something a little bigger for her so in February we sold the Fusion and bought her a Ford Escape. She is 16 now.

DS got a Jeep Grand Cherokee that my DH bought for about $1500. He drove that for a couple years and DH traded it for a standard cab 4wd Chevy truck. The truck was newer (2001) but had more miles on it but the transmission was starting to go in the Jeep. Knock on wood, he’s been driving the truck for about 3-4 years now, it has about 240k miles on it. We’ve had to put some money into it but cheaper than buying something else. I’m hoping it lasts until he buys his own car after college in a couple years.
DD inherited a 2004 Chevy Tracker from DH’s grandma. At the time it had 34k miles on it at 13yo old. She didn’t take it to college. I expect it to last through college as well.

Our kids were older, both girls were high school seniors, and ds got his a couple weeks ago, he'll be 22 in less than a month. Both girls got new (end of production year sales) X-Terras, ds got a 2017 Honda Accord. Our oldest daughter had a rough few years from 8th grade forward, including 2 major jaw surgeries and a terrible boating accident where she nearly lost her leg and recovery (not back to original) took a few years. I think we would have given her anything by the time she could drive, we just wanted her safe and happy. In fact, dh bought her a new car before she had her license that we traded in a few months later when we realized it had huge blind spots, so she had two new cars before she earned her driver's license. I don't know if we would have done the same if the situation was different, and then we felt like we had to do the same for the other two kids.

Three years ago we got a hand me down Buick LeSabre from my Grandpa. I think it's a 2008. It's been a great first car for both DD and now DS---big, sturdy, low miles, and a really smooth ride.
