They're are bigger problems with a child molester than gender whatever. I'm with the ones with zero fucks. I don't think you can rehab someone that sick. Just my two cents So don’t even try to protect potential future victims? Just shrug and let them out at the end of their sentence without even trying to rehabilitate? do you really think if she has this surgery it is going to keep her from violating someone again? I'm all for counseling both in prison and after they get out, but no way in hell am I in favor of a non-medically necessary surgery in prison. Do we then have people who can't afford the surgery purposefully committing crimes so that they can afford the surgery? Nope. This person committed a heinous crime. She shouldn't be rewarded for that. I don't think that having a surgery to become female is necessarily going to prevent future attacks. In fact, it night make them easier as women are often not seen as predatory as men. Does anybody know how registration on the sex offenders data base will be? Will they list gender at time of crime, current gender after surgery? Will her new name pop on a quick background check done by employers?

Re:Castration...this procedure isn’t an end all be all. All though the sex drive can be diminished erections still occur. But more so child exploitation can involve so much more. More then most on this board can even imagine or want to imagine. And yes, women are offenders as well. (Not saying anyone said they can’t be...just making a statement)

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI/KIDK) - Brady Summers dated Mason Edmo, now Adree Edmo, for two years. It was his first relationship since coming out. It did not end well.
"He would beat me on a constant basis," Summers said. "I had to keep my head low. I had to be careful what I said, careful what I did. And the final straw of me escaping that was him beating me with a frying pan."
Edmo went to jail, but tried to reconcile with Summers when he got out. It also did not end well. Not long after that, Edmo was in prison for sexual abuse of a child under the age of 16. It was then that Edmo began to get treatment for gender dysphoria, or conflict over feeling like he, Mason, should be a female. Edmo was also diagnosed with "gender identity disorder" and now identifies as a female and goes by the name Adree. She says that she was living as a female before she went to prison. Summers says Edmo never showed signs of either of these conditions, but was always a masculine, gay man.
"Never once indicated anything of gender dysphoria or sexual indifference," he said. "He was a predator. He, on several occasions, had his way with me. It was brutal."
After reading his ( I use “his” due to the article) crimes as a gay male. Now he identifies as a Woman and wishes to live as one. Right or wrong my personal opinion is the surgery would be good for society as without a male appendage, rape in that manner would be prevented. I would go farther and insist on a requirement to stay on hormones to reduce the strength they are capable of with male hormone circulating thru their body. Other than those points, I can see money being spent in worse manners and it is not violating this persons rights involuntary by insisting on chemical castration which also requires a constant dose of medication.

I don’t know how accurate what I read was, but it seems that she has been self harming and tried to castrate herself. It also appears that the crime she was sentenced for was for trying to give a sleeping 15 year old oral sex. Here are the two articles I read. www.idahostatesman.com/news/politics-government/state-politics/article230591124.htmlwww.localnews8.com/news/victim-of-transgender-inmate-speaks-out/940301641It really is such a complex issue. I change my mind every time I read one of your well thought out posts. Obviously I completely despise using the word “it” to describe any human being. That to me is hate speech and the poster clearly doesn’t understand. Child molesters are their own horrific kind of monsters, no doubt, but the person being discussed here did not commit the crime because of her gender identity.

I was responding to people who said they don’t care when I pointed out solitary confinement is always punishment and bad for mental health. I don’t have a position on this particular case, actually. But I am quite bothered by some of the attitudes towards trans people and prisoners that have been demonstrated on this thread. That’s what I’ve been talking about.

In that manner it could be avoided, but you don't need a penis to rape someone. Rape is a sexual penetration again someones will, be it sexual intercourse or other forms of penetration. So unless they are going to remove all form of sexual desire from him body there is nothing stopping him, even after a gender reassignment operation, to molest minors or anyone else come to that.

who decides what's elective and what's necessary, though? Maybe people in prison shouldn't get any vaccinations, or any preventive dental care, either? Just because YOU don't think sex change surgery is necessary for the health and mental well being of this individual doesn't mean the people who got to decide would share your opinion. Exactly. I don't think that smokers should get treatment for lung cancer - it was their choice, right? So any treatment/surgery following it is "elective" and the taxpayers shouldn't pay for it. I don't think that drug addicts should get treatment for their addictions - again, it was their choice. I don't think that obese people should get treatment for their high blood pressure, diabetes, heart bypass, or any of the other things that happen because of their choices. I don't think that people who crash their cars should get treatment for their injuries - they chose to drive dangerously. I don't think that people with genetic birth defects should get treatment - after all, their parents were the ones who chose to reproduce with defective genes. All of those sound horrible - but they all view health issues as "choices" where the person can be punished by withholding treatment. For the record, I think that as a society we SHOULD treat people when they are ill or injured, and we should also help them to make life changes that will help them with their addictions and health issues. As we learn more about gender identity and sexuality, we learn that it isn't necessarily a choice any more than a heart defect or depression. Would we tell a prisoner that they can't have heart surgery or meds, or get their depression treated? If we just say no to these treatments, does that not make more sentences into death sentences? If a diabetic prisoner is denied insulin, they will die. Do we just say "oh well, shouldn't have done the crime"- or do we treat them because they were sentenced to 4 years, not a life sentence? Some of our beliefs and prejudices will be looked upon 100 years from now as absolutely barbaric. If the medical personnel has determined that reassignment therapy is the appropriate treatment for this person, that is what should be done.

This person has existed this long without paying for gender transformation themselves. They can pay for it themselves when they get out. Inmates should get basic and life saving medical care. I don't care if your teeth are crooked, you don't like wearing glasses, or you want to be a different gender. That's on them.

Just like other medical procedures people in jail get and others in the general population may not (which is a whole other degree of problem thanks to our "We're #1" shitty medical system.

I read the taxpayer doesn’t really end up paying for the surgery over what it pays for the regular healthcare of inmates. Apparently, the state has a contract with Corizon Health, a well-known (and controversial) correctional medical provider. The state pays Corizon a flat fee per inmate. Any service that may cost over and above that dollar amount is not chargeable to the state. The issue may be that Corizon does not want to approve these types of costly surgeries for the obvious reason that they decrease their profits. That’s why Edmo’s lawsuit was against both the state and Corizon.
I can understand why Idaho is fighting this lawsuit, though, because they currently have 60-70 transgender inmates, 40 of whom have gender dysphoria. Even if just half of those wish to have gender reassignment surgery, you’re looking at costs of over half a million. I would imagine that at some point the state will be forced to increase their payments to Corizon because I don’t see a medical provider, any provider for that matter, willing to absorb those additional costs. So, I would imagine they do not want to set a precedent with the Edmo case.
I personally don’t know how I feel about this. On the one hand, if it’s been deemed medically necessary (although that’s disputed by the prison psychiatrist), it shouldn’t be any different than providing, say, cancer treatment. On the other hand, I also understand how taxpayers can see this as fundamentally unfair considering that there are tens of millions of law-abiding people who are uninsured and can’t even access primary care.

It’s not a foolproof step, but I could see it lowering those tendencies. Even the physical abuse they meted out to the former partner. Testosterone fueled rage would be made less likely. ( and of course I’m not saying that women never become enraged or abuse others. )

I would have to do a significant amount of research on gender dysmorphia and whether not having the surgery would have detrimental mental health effects.

I am a believer that if there is a treatment/cure/surgery etc, available for any disease or condition, it should be a basic human right to be treated. That looks like a big part of the split of opinions here. Some don't view it that way.

I would have to do a significant amount of research on gender dysmorphia and whether not having the surgery would have detrimental mental health effects. I don’t feel as though I need to research this. He has doctors that say it is medically necessary, and a judge who looked at the evidence and agreed. That’s good enough for me. And I agree with those who are troubled by the idea of catering to violent prisoners’ preferences, just on principle. But I don’t have all the facts, I’m never going to have all the facts, and I don’t have the medical or legal knowledge needed to make a reasonable decision here. So I’m going with what the experts have to say.

This prisoner has TWO issues. s/he needs counseling for the crime that was committed that caused incarceration! This same person needs extensive counseling prior to the surgery, it really is drastic surgery. Life changing .... Has all this been done? Counseling for BOTH issues. Is this person mentally healthy to proceed? Those are the questions that need answers before any surgery!

This is an it not a man or woman and deserves a dog cage and not a boob job because she’s misunderstood. Child molesters are not rehabilitated and I am the most trans rights supporting person but this bitch can rot in prison as a man. Feel free to put me on ignore if I offend you. I never forgive and forget about forgetting. YOU owe every person here who loves a transgender person an apology. Calling them an IT?? You are ridiculous.
