I have an annoyance. We leave the seat and cover down on our toilet all the time when not in use. If my parents or sister use the bathroom (we only have one unfortunately), they will leave the cover up every single time. It bugs me. Thankfully all brushes (hair and tooth) are in the cabinet so no spray.
Any time I use the bathroom at someone else's house, I will put the cover down if it was down or leave it up if it was up. In other words, leave it the way they seem to prefer it. I admit I will put the cover down before flushing and then put it back up if it was up when I went to use it.
I am not easily grossed out but I want the toilet cover down all the time.

I didn't vote because one and two are usually true.
IF I notice, I replicate the lid, but I don't always notice and would be amused if it irritated someone.

Both options 1 and 2? I leave it however I found it. Other than leaving the ring up. If I found it that way, I would leave it down when I was done.

would be amused if it irritated someone. I didn’t realize this was a thing until one of the guys at work mentioned what “bad manners” it was to leave the lid up.

I put it down. Habit. I wonder if I'm bugging people who don't normally put it down??

I think this is one of those habit things. I always put the lid down, so when using someone else's I put the lid down and it doesn't occur to me to note whether it was up or down when I arrived so I just leave it down. Similarly, my parents never put the lid down in their own home and it doesn't occur to them to put it down in mine.

I always leave it down after flushing. I’m so used to having kids and pets in the house that I automatically just leave it down. At home I get slightly irate because my DH doesn’t even close the lid to flush. And half the time I go in to the bathroom and find an empty cob from the TP on the spindle no matter which bathroom I go into, but that’s another rant for another day.

I put it down even if it's up when I go in. I keep it down at home so out of habit it's going down.

I would probably leave the lid as I found it...open if it was open and closed if it was closed.
I do not typically keep the lid closed on mine.

Do you mean the solid cover? I rarely see toilets with that down.
However, I think that the seat should always be left down for the next person.

I literally have no idea what I do. I've never given it a second's thought. I guess I leave it up because I've never paid attention to how it is when I walk in or how it is when I walk out.

Well this is a lid story but about me and dh. Dh really really Likes the cover down. Not me- I just wanna run into the bathroom and go, not mess with the seat. Neither of us use the kids bathroom but we agreed the powder room could have the lid down since it is so important to him (he thinks it looks “ugly” up. Ok...). But my hill to die on was my master toilet in a little washroom. I WANT THE LID UP! I go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and just to to be able To sit on the toilet without worrying about the lid when I’m still half asleep. He agreed to leave it open so we’d both get what we preferred on one toilet. Except he forgets. Every time. So I took matters into my own hands and used packing tape to tape the lid to the tank. Yep. but now it always stays up. Lol As for other people’s home- I leave it like I found it.

31 of you have voted, and 27 of you put the lid down every single time? Really? I’ve only heard of this if you’re showing your house.
I’m a heathen then. I don’t like touching toilets, even the lid. I leave it.

Definitely a lid putter-downer here. I think it looks tidier. What’s the point in having it if it’s meant to stay up? I read that feng shui says it should be down too, to avoid all your money going down the toilet.

I watched an episode of Myth Busters back in the day that concluded closing the lid made no discernible difference in contaminates. Even sterile toothbrushes in a medicine cabinet were affected. The lid does nothing except make people feel better.

Put the lid down to flush, but leave it as I found it. Same with gates.
In our own home, the lid is only up while the toilet is in use or being cleaned. I have a hole in my house that poo goes into. Give me one good reason why it should not be kept covered whilst not in use.

ETA sorry I quoted the wrong post. I wanted to quote lainey’s That said it was gross to flush with the lid up. I am all for people flushing as they please. For me having the lid open is not gross. Most of the home toilets that I have ever used do not flush with a force that would make me stand back and go eeeww. So what does the lid really do other than let you not to see “things” being flushed down, and just not looking allows for that just as easily. Now commercial toilets often flush with much more force and I would be more apt to put down the lid...but they rarely have them.

I’m not fussed about the toilet lid. Never have been.
I leave it however I found it at someone else’s house.

I agree with all of this except I wouldn't have said empty cob. Never heard it called that. I don't care about Mythbusters or that our low flush toilets 'probably' don't projectile the poop germs, it's just gross. We keep our toothbrushes tucked away, everything is. I wish we had a bathroom with the toilet in it's own little room, then it probably would bother me so much.

There is no reason for it.

Judge away....I never put the lid down and have managed to live almost 68 years without falling ill from toilet spray germs. But then again, I use a porta-potti if it's my only option, and have done what bears do in the woods when camping with no facilities.
Now middle-of-the-night SEAT up issues have caused some discussion in my house!

We always keep the lid closed- that way there is never a situation where someone is surprised in the night by the seat being up. My mom leaves mine open. I close it the next time Im in there.
