I have learned from these threads that I am so NOT a germaphobe. The only place that I am remotely aware of germs is my kitchen and I pay attention when cooking. I am old and I never get sick, I have a very healthy immune system.
My toilet lid is rarely down.

It’s disgusting if you don’t put the lid down before you flush. Why would you not want to contain the spray? I heavily judge people who don't keep their kids down. There is no reason for it. You “frequently” get period blood and vaginal secretions all over your bath towels and you’re judging me about a toilet lid? Okay. 👍 Yep. I clean myself with my towels. Shocking. Not putting the lid down is on par with not washing your hands after you use the bathroom. It’s just an easy and basic level of cleanliness.

I literally have no idea what I do. I've never given it a second's thought. I guess I leave it up because I've never paid attention to how it is when I walk in or how it is when I walk out. Same. I am not fussy about toilet lids and frankly, I don’t care one way or the other about flushing with the lid open or closed. I probably do it both ways, but it’s not something I’ve really thought about. We’re all healthy and my house is clean.

I’ve never really thought about it, but since I always put the lid down when I flush, I’ll say I do it every time. I know I wouldn’t put the lid back up after flushing.

I keep the lid closed at home because one time our kitten made one of those crazy runs through the house and ended up in the (clean) toilet. We called him Mr. Peabody for a long time after that. He's 11 years old now but I still keep the lid closed in all bathrooms. In other people's houses, I leave them however I found them.

I always put the lid down. Who cares if you touch the lid? You’re going to wash your hands in two seconds.

Judge away....I never put the lid down and have managed to live almost 68 years without falling ill from toilet spray germs. But then again, I use a porta-potti if it's my only option, and have done what bears do in the woods when camping with no facilities. Now middle-of-the-night SEAT up issues have caused some discussion in my house! I don’t understand the whole “I’m still alive” argument. There are plenty of people alive who have terrible hygiene habits. There are plenty of people alive who have filthy houses. And there’s always a couple of people on these threads who don’t understand that being alive is completely separate from being disgusting.

IMO, it is so not on par with washing your hands. You probably get more spray on you while you are peeing than you do when you are flushing. Or I want to see what you all have for toilets. Again to each their own, but I do not see it with the disgust level that some here do. 🤷♀️

We never put the cover down but our toilet is in its own “room” away from the sinks.

I think this? lol I don't know that many bathrooms I go into have the lid down. I am pretty sure I leave the lid up.... ? The only thing that grosses me out and I think is in bad manners is when a man (ahem HUSBAND) leaves the ring up. C'mon dude. Didn't your mother teach you to put that down? A girl (and 3 live here!) can't sit on a seat with the ring up. Gross!

This drives me crazy when I have people over. People always leave it up! I leave the lid down at all times. I have a cat that is always on the look out for water and if the lid is up he will find it and spend ages playing in the toilet water.
I'm in the camp that you leave the lid as you found it. So if I am at someone's house and it is down I will put it down. If it was up I will leave it up. Everyone has a preference, it's rude to not pay attention and leave the bathroom as you found it.

I think you are the first person in my recall who has ever called me disgusting. I will be sure and laugh every time I flush with the lid up in my brand new, beautiful, newly remodeled bathroom, just because YOU think I am disgusting!!! Have a great weekend!

My husband trained me pretty quickly to put the lid down. I love it. Nothing can fall in, he was the one who was in the habit, now I do it everywhere. My kids, however, cannot learn to put the lid down.

31 of you have voted, and 27 of you put the lid down every single time? Really? I’ve only heard of this if you’re showing your house. I’m a heathen then. I don’t like touching toilets, even the lid. I leave it. Yes, every single time. We used to have two big dogs that would drink out of the toilet if we didn’t, and that to me is even more gross than touching the lid and then washing my hands. Also, little kids can fall in and drown. It’s a thing. They now sell lid locks so big headed top heavy little kids can’t fall in and get stuck. Even though my kid isn’t little like that anymore old habits die hard. And for the record, I even put it down after DH has been in there and didn’t. It drives me nuts to see the lid up. ETA: Plus if the lid is down, it’s less likely that a clumsy person will accidentally drop or knock something off the counter into the toilet.

I guess I assume the lid is there for a reason, to be used. Why would they put lids on toilet seats if they weren’t to be used? I don’t wanna walk into my bathrooms and see toilet bowls, I’d much rather just see the top of the lid. Personal preference.

I won’t say always but, yes generally I put the lid down. Partly for bathroom spray reasons and partly it’s a lid and that’s what it’s supposed to do...cover openings.

I can't think of a house I've been in recently when the lid hasn't been up already.
However I will leave it how I found it as there might be reasons for that particular household. In mine we do not put it down because we have a three year old who is very good at using the potty but will stand there and pee her pants if the lid is down and we aren't quick enough. I'd rather have spray than cleaning up puddles of urine and urine soaked clothes.

After a busy day, this was amusing. I do not think my parents or sister are disgusting and are probably leaving the lid up out of habit. Thank you for saying it is a habit for you. I put it down. We have one bathroom. It is not very big. DH managed to knock my contact case into the toilet once. Thankfully my contacts were not in it and I had another. I am not a germaphobe but if something got knocked into the toilet that holds something that makes contact with my eyeballs, I am tossing it. As for being annoyed, I do not have the best relationship with my parents so I am easily annoyed by them. I probably never noticed if my MIL failed to put the lid back down or not. At least not enough to comment on it.
I have seen several bathroom and hygiene threads here so I thought this little petty annoyance would make for easy entertainment.

I chose the second option - put the cover down if it was already down.
I don't put the lid down at home, and most people I know also don't put the lid down. I always put it down at my mum's and at one friend's house, because they both prefer it down.

So yeah, I get it why she’d want hers kept down. Just like I didn’t like my dogs to drink out of our toilet so we kept ours down at all times. Eeewwww. Gross.
