I don't have any pets but the house is 30 years old and my vacuum gets musty smelling after a few years (or less) and I really want to replace it at about 3 years.
My DH will wash out the filter and the canister with hot soapy water a few times a year but it doesn't take the smell away for long. I just can't stand that smell.
Now before I'm labeled as someone bad for the environment, I keep cars for decades, fridge is 25 years old, other kitchen appliances are 30 years old and we are just now replacing them, my bed sheets are 15 years old, etc.
My current vacuum is a Shark Rotator Professional from Costco I think. Probably around $275 or so. What would you buy next if you know you only want to keep it around 3 to 4 years?

I actually have no idea. My vacuum cleaners are bought to last. I've been using Dysons for years now, and although I think I know the smell you're talking about from bag cleaners, I have never had a Dyson smell like that. Other than the motor, it's pretty much all washable.

No, they are so expensive that I just take the whole thing apart including the 2 filters, clean it out well and it is good to go.

No, I use ours until they die. I think our current one might be close to 10 years old now. It is a top of the line canister Kenmore from Sears.

Plus it takes hours of research just to decide they are all the same damn thing and then I go buy one

I wonder what's causing that. I've never had a "musty smell" problem and have almost always lived in older homes. My condo building is well over 100 YO.
Anyhow, I have an Oreck upright that's probably 15 years old. No smells and works like a charm. I've taken it in probably 3x over the years for a little tune up but that's it. I'm hopeful that it's the last vacuum I ever need to buy. I also have a smaller Oreck cannister purchased at the same time and that one I've never had to have serviced.

I've never noticed any kind of musty smell in a vacuum cleaner and we keep them till they die.

I have had my vacuum for 20 years and no desire to replace it. It doesn't smell or act funny. I can't imagine paying money like that every 3 years.. but that is me.

I use ours until it dies. We have a dog so I know that our vacuum can smell musty after a while; however, usually a good cleaning clears it up. Are you sure your filters were left to completely dry before using? Also, try cleaning the entire vacuum, not just the filters, but all the parts including the brush head, canister and hose (google deep cleaning). If the smell still returns, you can buy replacement filters rather than a whole new vacuum.
ETA: Also, if the smell keeps returning, it likely is due to your rugs and not the vacuum.

I would love it because ours smells musty and sometimes like burning rubber. But dh insists that we use it until it dies and I don't really have a compelling argument other than the smell. I kind of want to vacuum up a bunch of legos and rubber bands to see if i can kill it. eta: our vacuum cleaner is well over 10 yrs old. I don't think I'd want to replace every 3 or 4 yrs.

I was just thinking about this as I used mine yesterday. I’ve had it 5 years and it’s still going strong. I hope it never breaks because I love it so much. Doesn’t smell at all and I have an extreme sense of smell.

If it's just a smell issue, I would try a more thorough cleaning. (check Youtube for instructions) You could also consider placing a small bit of cloth or a cotton ball in the bag/canister with a few drops of an essential oil.

I've never heard of that issue with vacuum cleaners. We have been married 36 years and I am on my third vacuum cleaner. It's a Miele that is about 2 years old. The Miele before that lasted 17 years.

I use a vacuum until it dies typically. My last one was a bit of of an investment - Miele - so I hope to have it for decades.

I’ve only noticed funky smells from vacuums that have bags. I never really noticed an ongoing smell from any of the bagless vacuums we’ve had, but I do tend to take it apart and clean out the canister really well with white vinegar a few times a year.

I have no idea what new vacuum you might want.
I'm still using a Dyson I bought in 2006.
About the musty smell, though, can you take it to a vacuum repair shop, tell them the issue, and see if they can fix it so that it doesn't smell anymore?

We used to, but then we bought an industrial backpack one like janitors use. It is a very simple machine, but it sucks!

You can replace the filters, you don’t just have to wash them. I’d be more willing to rip out any old musty carpet/replace old rugs before I got a new vacuum every 3 years.

Try a vacuum with bags and filters. The bagless vacuums always stunk to me, so we moved to bagged. Such a difference as the bags act as a filter, too. If the vacuum smells a little dog-like, a bag change always fixes it.
Like others above we run vacuums until they die, too, except cheap parts keep breaking making them unrepairable (planned obsolescence). So when our last one broke last month, we upgraded to an actual repairable vacuum. We decided on the Miele cat and dog version, and the filters and bags on this are like Cadillacs I swear. I was absolutely shocked at how thick these bags are. Go check this vacuum out at a dealer. We haven’t filled our first bag yet, but I really doubt it will ever smell.

We blow our filters out with the air compressor. It does a really good job of getting the dust out of the fibers and there is no water involved.
I do like a new vacuum though. I feel like they just don't suck as well after a few years.

No, I clean my Dyson. Had it since 2004 and still works fine. Now, bed sheets--I replace more often. I'll use one set of sheets--wash weekly and put back on the bed. But I definitely replace more often than 15 yrs!

I don't replace mine until they die. I'm only on my second cleaner in 21 years. I don't have a smell from mine. I clean out the filter occasionally and empty the bag pretty regularly but that's about all I do.

My sister is a vacuum killer -- she killed two Dysons - last April she killed my Dyson ... she buys only less expensive vacuum cleaners now since she kills them -- can't say "cheap" because none of them are cheap! Don't ask -- I do not know why -- she actually takes better care of her vacuums than I do -- she took better care of my vacuum before she killed it.
