This is me, too. On our last day in the States, I went to Target and Hobby Lobby. From now on, I’ll rely on the crafty Peas to enable me with what to buy online. Rather than online, check out the places you intend to visit for crafty stuff e.g. The pretty town of Utrecht, Holland has a fabric market every Saturday morning, the market is 400 years old. Utrecht is a train hub as well so should be easy to get to. www.holland.com/global/tourism/destinations/utrecht/markets-in-utrecht.htmI’ll keep that in mind! I loved the fabric market in Seoul and would go almost every week. It’s 2 1/2 hours by car and 8 hours by train (but that could be because few trains run at night, when I just mapped it out).

Update 2: 9/24–we signed the lease today on the smaller house. We will move in on the 11th because they need to reinstall the railing and bannister. They took it down for the last tenant’s move out and will reinstall it when we move in. I have no idea how they will get a washer and dryer up those stairs, much less an armoire, but they promise that it will be just fine. We did some exploring this weekend and found that there’s a nearby town that is much larger than our little village, with even more train options. And there’s at least 3 grocery stores within 5 minutes of the house. I’m still working on dairy free substitutes, but we will get there. Attachments:

That's charming, though the staircase without the railing looks a little daunting. I'm glad they're going to put it back! I'm sorry you missed out on the farmhouse, but it sounds like this one has some advantages also.
P.S. I spy a pup rump! 😄

I would choose the house near the town. I like convenience.

I could live in a one room cold water flat if I were living in most places in Europe! Congratulations on getting a place, sorry it wasn’t the farmhouse, but the pictures you posted and what you are describing sound so delightful!!!

Wow that staircase seems very steep.
How exciting to be living somewhere much different than the U.S.
Too bad about the farm.

I think she sniffed every inch of the place. We have gates on each side of the house and they made sure they were closed. Then Henri spent a lot of time petting Emma and every time she would pass by, he would give her a little scratch. From my limited French, it seems they lost their golden retriever, Jaegar, a short time ago. At the lease signing yesterday, Jeanine was telling the engineer how sweet Emma was. She’s a charmer!

Wow that staircase seems very steep. How exciting to be living somewhere much different than the U.S. Too bad about the farm. It’s crazy steep. But they all are. In every house we looked at, there was either a steep staircase or an open staircase (meaning the back of the treads is open). This was one of the better staircases!

Make your first day out to Bruges - you won't regret it. It's absolutely charming. You are right; everyone has been very friendly and helpful. And really patient with my horrible French pronunciation! I have some food allergies and restaurants have all been really helpful accommodating me. Thank God for the Google Translate app! The housing office here has been great with Emma. When we were looking at houses, we have a person calling for us to make the appointments since we don’t speak French. They tell about the dog upfront and I told them that Emma was “un chien de thérapie”. They wanted to meet her and now Emma is welcome in the housing office anytime. Our first “official” day out was Attre. It was very charming and there were lots of fun shops to explore. I think we will do something on Saturday. Maybe Bruges! Right now we are just waiting for our household goods to arrive and clear customs. Then we can schedule the real move in dates, although they currently have us blocked off for our dates. They really frown on you going over 30 days in lodging and you need the base commander’s signature. We will be exactly at 30 days when we move in, so everyone in the office was pleased yesterday.
