Meanwhile in head-in-the-sand-land: Pastors praise Trump for skipping UN panel on 'imaginary' climate crisis for 'real' problem of religious persecution. And who is one of the most outspoken religious persecutors in this country!! Do I need to answer that? I don't think so!

DISGUSTING CREEP! Greta is brave and brilliant and she is changing the world. I love, love, love her! And I think it is beyond disgusting that she and other children are carrying this huge weight on their shoulders, this fear of the future. My generation did that. I feel like we let them down horrifically.

Fox News apologized to Greta for the remarks by Michael Knowles and state they have no plans to let him on future shows. www.buzzfeednews.com/article/claudiakoerner/fox-news-apologized-greta-thunberg-mentally-illI love what she said about herself: “When haters go after your looks and differences, it means they have nowhere left to go. And then you know you’re winning! I have Aspergers and that means I’m sometimes a bit different from the norm. And - given the right circumstances- being different is a superpower.#aspiepower”

I love her for the expression on her face when Trump lumbered in, giving the impression that he thought he was the master of the universe.. Summed up my feelings for him perfectly.

How low can these people get? Laura Ingraham compared her to " Children of the Corn" and said she couldn't wait for Stephen King's next sequel " Children of the Climate". link The number of people that think the same way as these two on social media is truly disgusting.

I think she is a brave, fierce young woman and I strongly believe in her cause. However, this latest performance made me feel uncomfortable somehow. This was not a speech, it was a *performance*.
This child has suffered from depression since age 8. She is also diagnosed with apergers syndrom and obsessive compulsive disorder, which transitioned to an obsession over her fear of climate change. During her childhood she developed mutism and a really severe eating disorder, which is when she stopped going to school.
Part of her rise to international publicity is caused by her mom, who is an opera singer, putting Greta's stories out on her social media.
I just don't know. I'm not even sure what point I am making here. I just fear that this child is way more vulnerable then she comes across, and I hope she's not in the spotlight for the wrong reasons, and I hope she deals with all of this well. Seeing her there made me feel a bit worried. If this was my daughter, given her mental health problems, I'm not sure if I would have let her do this this way.

I totally get what you are saying and I don't think I can express what I want to say in response very well but many of our world geniuses/great leaders/great artists, past and present, have had mental health problems, been vulnerable, been different. It's because of this that they have gone on to do great things. We desperately need someone now, doing great things, someone has to get things moving, galvanise the world where the 'adults in charge' give platitudes and empty promises or, in some cases, actively make things worse. The mother in me understands your feelings exactly and I would be wanting to protect her if she was my child.

I understand what you are saying and I think your concerns are justified. As someone with mental illness myself who is raising two children with mental illness, I feel that for me, I have moments of greatness and I'm not going to let my mental illness or fear of exposure or potential future suffering to stop my moments of greatness. And I have one child like me. My other child seeks to live a life of anonymity and I am alright with that as well. I think as parents, things like this need to be child led. And my hope is that Greta is the one who is behind this and her parents will stand behind andpick her up if she falls.

She has described what the media reports as mutism as meaning she "only speaks when necessary" which one can interpret as, she doesn't abide with idle chit chat. There are a lot of people out there that have very successful careers who have been diagnosed with Aspergers syndrom and many others that have it and have not being diagnosed. I don't see any of them being referred to as mentally ill in the same way as the media is portraying her. This isn't a new campaign for her she's been active in doing something about it since she was 8 years old. I think she's a very intelligent young woman who is actually passionate about what she believes in and has inspired youth around the world to bring it to the notice of adults who should know better and be far more informed than they seem to be. Far from it being her parents that are encouraging her on this path, her campaigning gathered speed after she wrote an essay about climate change which was published in a Swedish newspaper and other climate activists contacted her.

@dottyscrapper I want to clarify that I don't think autism is mental illness and that's not what I was referring to in my comment. But the depression and OCD most definitely are. Eating disorder is kind of on the line for me.

But this passion seems to actually be a clinically diagnosed obsession, and I find that worrying. Also her speech seemed so incredibly over the top - 'you stole my childhood'? really? It just struck me as odd.

Are you paying attention to what the effects of climate change will be in about 50 years when you and I are gone but these kids and their kids are struggling w/climate refugees, runaway methane release, etc? Eating disorder is kind of on the line for me. Oh I wasn't referring to you jeremysgirl not at all. I was referring to the media when they berate her Aspergers as mental illness. They all make such a point of her Aspergers diagnosis to dismiss her passion in what she believes in. They've also taken her "mutism" out of context which was mentioned in her mother's autobiography explaining the challenges of dealing with Aspergers and ADHD ( which her sister has been diagnosed with) within family life. I can think of many a teenager that can be described as being " mute" when the occasion arises, mine included but I choose to call it selective hearing when they don't answer me!

People are suffering, people are dying, eco systems are collapsing.........I'll give her a pass in using my instead of our....she's representing the youth of this world

I am not that familiar with her previous actions and don't know what is typical speech or behavior for her. But what I did listen to from this last speech did feel "off" to me as well. Not that I am saying that how people have been treating her is ok. ETA that I also want to point out that there is a diagnosis of selective mutism, which is much different than "typical teenage selective hearing." I would assume that if her mother is saying that she "developed mutism" that she was actually diagnosed with it. Again, that doesn't make it ok for people to dismiss what she has to say. But to minimize the diagnosis is not ok, either.

Let's see, child has Aspergers (and states that in her Insta profile) and diagnosed depression, OCD, mutism, and eating disorder. Mom has written a book.
Nope, no ulterior agenda here.
