This child has some severe issues that relate to her belief that the world is literally coming to an end (disregard whether or not you believe it to be true or not - this child does and it is the focus of her OCD and possibly depression issues according to her mother). The mother is pushing this child out onto a worldwide stage to not only discuss it over and over again but also to be held up to international discussion and criticism (again right or wrong, it is inevitable). I can't see any positive benefit for the child to be in a position where she is hyperfocusing on the one thing that is causing some severe mental distress in at least one or two ways. Except publicity for mom's book. Yes - - - lots of people write books (*lots* is debatable), but lots of people don't shove the subject of their book into international focus. I haven't checked the stats on the book sales but I think it is safe to say that people who never heard of it have now checked it out. And people who support her have purchased it. I think we have found the potential positive benefit. Any publicity is good publicity. What always amazes me is how low Republicans are willing to go to discredit admirable people on the other side of the aisle who have something important to say. It's job one because they have so few reasonable logical rebuttals. So they go right to the tear-down.

I think she is a brave, fierce young woman and I strongly believe in her cause. However, this latest performance made me feel uncomfortable somehow. This was not a speech, it was a *performance*. This child has suffered from depression since age 8. She is also diagnosed with apergers syndrom and obsessive compulsive disorder, which transitioned to an obsession over her fear of climate change. During her childhood she developed mutism and a really severe eating disorder, which is when she stopped going to school. Part of her rise to international publicity is caused by her mom, who is an opera singer, putting Greta's stories out on her social media. I just don't know. I'm not even sure what point I am making here. I just fear that this child is way more vulnerable then she comes across, and I hope she's not in the spotlight for the wrong reasons, and I hope she deals with all of this well. Seeing her there made me feel a bit worried. If this was my daughter, given her mental health problems, I'm not sure if I would have let her do this this way. I think this is fair and I appreciate your insight. I do think, however, that many of the best minds have had to deal with mental illness. As someone who has to deal with depression, I sincerely hope her loved ones make sure that he health is first and foremost. And yes, she is one of the most courageous kids I've ever seen.

The words scientific and evidence are foreign to many Republicans. And the "woke self" comment directed at Lucyg was assy. But then, what do you expect?

Only if you accept the findings of the vast majority of the world's scientists instead of fairy tales put out by Big Oil. Talk about ulterior motives. But I guess the right ignores those "ulterior motives". What a joke. climate.nasa.gov/faq/17/do-scientists-agree-on-climate-change/

I find it hilarious that the word woke is being used as an insult by so many.
Somehow, this right has turned this into a bad thing and are oh so happy to use it in a condescending manner. Kind of like being politically correct. Being aware and choosing to be kind is bad. Gotchya.

Can't wait to see how the religious naysayers will spin the issue in 15-20 years' time (if they're still around). Will they revert to some sort of God's plan and oh how mysterious He is excuse? The amount of cognitive dissonance they experience daily must be all-consuming and exhausting. I'm really glad I'm not in in their shoes because I'm not sure my mind could handle all these crazy mental gymnastics and the amount of stress endured daily to pseudo-reason my way out of the scientific evidence and irrefutable data.

Only those who aren’t already firmly on the side of reason and science will believe for a moment that these types of comments serve to nullify Greta’s points. Worst case scenario, her parents (or others) are in fact using her. She’s still right.

I was a wee bit excited they said they are starting the impeachment process with Trump and shared the article with no comment on Facebook. I'm thinking of editing and adding
"I am so grateful for our father in Heaven who has made this happen. He truly does love his children. Tender mercies exist everyday."

Possibly, although a quick google search indicates that Sweden does use the DSM 5 for clinical purposes. I was responding more to you since you seemed to be discounting the diagnosis/claim of a diagnosis of Autism, saying that it was actually Asperger's. I wasn't discounting the word Autism but pointing out that Asperger Syndrome is a branch of the Autism Spectrum Disorder with a certain diagnosis in so far as it's condition is similar to autism in some aspects but without clinically significant language delay after the toddler years. People with Asperger Syndrome usually have no general cognitive delay, meaning their overall IQ is usually in the normal range or above and very often of very high intelligence. Just because they put them both under the same name doesn't mean there is no significant difference within the spectrum. Yeah, it’s all just Autism now. They eliminated the differentiation. (I’m not a fan but that’s me).

@bonanza said: This child has some severe issues that relate to her belief that the world is literally coming to an end (disregard whether or not you believe it to be true or not - this child does and it is the focus of her OCD and possibly depression issues according to her mother). We can't disregard whether we believe it to be true or not. Because *I* believe it to be true. Does this mean that my mental health is preventing me from seeing the issue rationally? Second do all those people who believe (without facts, I might add) that God is in control and that there is no climate crisis because *He* will provide, suffer from a mental disorder preventing them from being rational? Because I don't see how one side can be argued without the other. And at least one side of this issue has science on their side. I want to one day live in a world where the content of what we say is actually listened to without people opposing us dismissing on the basis of mental diagnoses. Yes, I'm touchy. I'm used to having the difficult things I say being dismissed due to mental illness. You nailed it. No matter the reason for this young girl’s passion about climate change, I believe that she is on the right side of history. She may well have serious issues, but she spoke truth to power, and I respect that.

In one of the articles posted here Greta states the proceeds of the book went to 8 different charities. The book that hasn't been released yet? Greta's own book has been released since the end of May. Maybe you'd be interested in what she has to say you can get it on Amazon and it's called" No one is too small to make a difference" multiple excellent reviews ...... .This is brilliant and an important read for young people and adults alike. The haters and oil sponsored shills will flood it with bad reviews but Greta is not making this up - she's just saying listen to the science. The rest of us seem to happy to go over the cliff into oblivion. Great insight to climate change from a young girls point a view. Good readWell written / very accessible Will use with students in school to kickstart discussion.and so many more. Just because her mother has had problems with the original publishers of her book doesn't mean that the message that Greta has to give us isn't worth listening to.

You know what's really crazy? That people are willing to put down the 16-year old girl because they've been led by their media to believe that it's the right thing to do, because admitting that climate change is happening might cause some rich old guys to be slightly less wealthy.
The science tells us the planet is changing. The science tells us that at tipping point is coming, after which we will find it difficult to reverse the effects of climate change. The science tells us that this is going to cause major catastrophes and disastrous impacts upon the people on the planet. Our military leaders tell us that climate change is going to have a major impact on national security, as climate refugees become a thing. Our farmers tell us that they have noticed the change in climate having an impact on their crops already. We've seen an increase in the frequency and strength of hurricanes, and flooding and blizzards have become a major issue for many parts of the US.
But admitting that climate change is human caused and that our ways need to be changed if we hope to survive means that the fossil fuel industries will have to change. And those fossil fuel guys really like making money. So you end up with the message being pushed that they need to push back against the "stupid libs" who are trying to take away our way of life. You end up with young men on 4chan/8chan/wherever making attacks on 16-year old girls as if they stand to profit from the continued use of fossil fuels. Just imagine their dismay when they realize that the oil execs aren't going to be voting them a bonus for calling Greta names and attacking her for her autism, but that they WILL be having to deal with the fallout from climate change.
Crazy talk. There is no other planet to fall back on, and if Americans who oppose the science really think that they'll be exempt from the ramifications because they're American and can always avoid bad things because 'Murica - well, that's not really how it works.
Now, some countries WILL benefit from the polar caps melting, the sea level rising, and a general warming trend. Russia has a lot of permafrost that could become useful if it weren't frozen. They could also use a warm port and the ability to sail around the arctic year-round.

If Greta was a black girl talking about racism how different might this conversation look? I think she too would be considered inconvenient by people with privilege. I think there is an army of girls pursuing a better global future but we aren’t hearing them yet, may that happen in my lifetime so I can witness it.

Hi @dottyscrapper I asked how different might the conversation look if Greta was a black girl talking about racism. You made the assumption about what I was “suggesting” and then got “hurt”, do see see how problematic your response is? Your defensiveness showed when the first words of thought out response to my question was “In what way”. When black women say white women make racism all about their hurt feelings all while shutting down dialogue, you are exactly who we are talking about. Again I ask, how different might this conversation look if Greta was a black girl talking about racism? You can ponder that question without me.

The voices of women have been missing from power-positions and decision-making for MILLENNIA.
And this is why.
But guess what, men in power, we're not going back. EVER.
So whether it's Greta or Juliana or Chanel Miller or Malala or Emma Gonzalez - we're going to DRAG the world toward progress, equality and safety - the kind that's not just for rich white dudes.

Truth is, I think if this were a black girl talking about racism, she'd most likely not be heard at the UN at this time. I still think all women have a ways to go but black women even further. The liberal response would probably be mixed. But I think the conservative response would be the same. They won't hear it.
