www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/27817767/steve-kerr-says-being-called-president-trump-was-surrealLet me start by saying that before Trump called him out about the NBA and China, I could not have picked Steve Kerr out of a lineup. I might have recognized him as a “sports figure,” but I’m not sure I would have even recognized him as part of the NBA. That said, I love his response to Trump’s criticism and how he refused to get sucked into an argument. “I refuse to be a sound bite”—I think more people should take that approach with Trump.

I’m not a fan of Steve Kerr or Donald Trump, but I do think that was an elegant response by Steve Kerr. Did he go on to address the situation in Hong Kong?
I am a big NBA fan and I have to say I’m sickened by this whole matter. It certainly seems like the NBA cares more about profits than human rights.

Shades of things to come. But that's what happens when you care about profits over people. China is a country full of buyers - that's all capitalists see.

Steve Kerr lives in a country where he has the freedom to speak his mind about the president and the country, which does frequently, without being hauled off to jail and beaten. He gets asked about the issues with the NBA and China, and he's speechless, confused, and won't comment on the "bizarre international story." He's a phony.

I like Steve Kerr, the coach, but don't like Steve Kerr the man. I'll leave it at that.

He said he didn't know enough about the situation to be comfortable talking about it and that he'd have to do research. There doesn't seem anything confusing or speechless about that to me. The point he made about most of the time people wanting him to stick to basketball until they don't was interesting. He has a fair point. He's also right about the Human Rights violations committed by the US. And gun safety. I'm not sure why people don't like him (is it because the Warriors tend to dominate? - honest question, I really don't follow NBA), but nothing he said in the linked article gives me any pause about him. Honestly, the President should have more important things to worry about than whether one NBA Coach comments on a situation or not.

I read his comments, I heard his comments. Basketball is BIG business in China. China wouldn't allow NBA news conference before the game Thursday, and now the NBA is doing the same. IMO damage control.
Some of you may believe Kerr doesn't really understand what's going on in China and Hong Kong, with him finding it just bizarre, and that's fine. I don't.

I respect people who admit they don't know enough about a situation to have a public opinion. Kerr is deep in basketball season. I highly doubt he's spending much time informing himself on breaking news. I'm sure he has a personal opinion but at this point, it's probably not based in much more than gut instinct. He doesn't want to insert himself in a controversy without knowing more - I don't see how that's a bad thing. We would all do well to follow that lead.

You keep saying the word bizarre as if he said it. I went back and read that article 2 more times and even did a word search on the web page. He never used the word bizarre, nor any word that can be construed as if he thought the situation was bizarre. More than once he said he doesn't feel like he has all the information he needs to comfortably speak on the topic. Mountain meet mole hill.

If that's not enough, you can find the live interview on YouTube if you want (look up "Steve Kerr no comments on Morey/China").
If you're interested in what's at stake for the NBA if this rift continues, there's this:
"At stake in the standoff: billions of dollars for both sides and a strong four-decade-long relationship that began with a Washington Bullets exhibition game in 1979. It is a relationship that has multiple layers including Chinese-related business partnerships with NBA players in the millions, a friendship with Basketball Hall of Famer and former NBA All-Star Yao Ming, who is the president of the Chinese Basketball Association and is a vital goodwill ambassador for the NBA in Asia, and millions of fans."
Also:
"If all of a sudden China decided it was no longer going to broadcast the NBA, clearly that would hurt CCTV and Tencent [an Internet conglomerate offering multiple e-services], but it would hurt the NBA more,” Syracuse University professor John Wolohan, who specializes in sports law and U.S.-China sports relations, told USA TODAY Sports. “If one of these sides is going to lose, it’s going to be the NBA.”
NBA revenue from China -- and a conservative estimate puts that at $500 million annually based on deals that are publicly known -- is part of basketball-related income which impacts the salary cap and how much money is available to players on an annual basis."
The article goes on to explain individual players and how they endorse their clothing in China.
Steve Kerr has been involved with the NBA for over 30 years as a player, broadcaster, commentator, general manager, coach, and even a small percent owner. He knows exactly what's on the line with China. So no, I'm not buying his short and simple non-answer.
adding: I didn't realize the first link has the video clip of his original comments so no need to search YouTube.

Do you know what's going on in Hong Kong ? Do you ? I would guess like a lot of others you don't know the history of Hong Kong or what those demonstrators are fighting for. Why would you think Kerr should comment on it when he's admitted that he doesn't know enough about the issue?

Ah! money. That's OK everyone just turn a blind eye to the injustice provided the money is still coming in!

I'm not sure why you think I care about what's at stake between the NBA and China. I could gift two shits about the NBA. Because what the NBA and those owners need is MORE MONEY. If you feel he knows enough to comment, maybe he's choosing NOT to comment because of that. Maybe he disagrees with the NBA and the ass kissing they are doing to China right now, but he knows enough to keep his mouth shut. Who knows. I don't know. You don't know.

Just like I agree with your general point here, we should all know more before we insert ourselves, especially publicly. That being said...he’s not deep in the season, the season hasn’t even started, it’s still pre-season. And he is known to be very aware of and speak out about political topics so I have a very hard time believing that he is uninformed in this situation. From his other comments about this (not those in the OP), and other comments from around the league, I really feel like they are being muzzled and I don’t like it one bit.

He gets asked about the issues with the NBA and China, and he's speechless, confused, and won't comment on the "bizarre international story." He's a phony. I listened to Steve Kerr’s answer. It was a person who actually thought about what he wanted to say before saying it instead of just blurting out some gibberish. “"I don't," Kerr said following Warriors practice Monday evening. "It's a really bizarre international story, and a lot of us don't know what to make of it. So it's something I'm reading about just like everybody is, but I'm not going to comment further than that."What I've found is that it's easy to speak on issues that I'm passionate about and that I feel like I'm well-versed on, and I've found that it makes the most sense to stick to topics that fall in that category," he added. "So I try to keep my comments to those things, and so it's not difficult. It's more I'm just trying to learn."Missing was the part where he said he sent an emailed his BIL who studied a Chinese History. There was nothing wrong with this answer and if this is what trump was whining about then it was nothing but another political attack by trump against anyone or anything associated with San Francisco. And because trump acted as the petty vindictive little man that he is, he got his ass handed to him by Steve Kerr.
