Book Burning at College
What is wrong with people? You may have a different opinion, you may think the author is wrong but how in the world is it ok to threaten and burn the work of someone you disagree with. As a librarian the thought is so appalling. I have no words. Tina

Really sickening, and more than that, frightening. Reminiscent of Nazi Germany.

If those idiots want to pretend white privilege is purely economic, ask them to find the last time a white person was shot to death in their own home by a cop while playing video games with their nephew.

As Kurt Eichenwald said on Twitter, “We are all learning where we would have lined up in Nazi Germany”.

I am utterly disgusted that this university did nothing in the way of punishment towards the students who did the book burning. By this inaction they are, in my mind, perfectly condoning the book burning.
The first thing I thought of when I read this was the Nazi book burning of the 1930's.
And the famous quote by Heinrich Henne written in 1823 "Where books are burned, people in the end, will also be burned".
I find any book burning appalling.

I think those students have missed what " white privilege" actually means.Which makes them white privilege uneducated students.
I'm surprised that the college dismissed the book burning without any consequences.

For those of you saying how the university did nothing for punishment to the kids who burned the books...there doesn't actually happen to be a school rule that says "no burning books".
Not trying to make light of it, just pointing that out. The school did have a serious talk with all of them, including continuing the conversation that the original questioner started during the lecture.

Exactly, as the article pointed out it was within their first amendment rights. I don't see this as any different then burning the flag, both are sadly disgusting but there's no law against it.

I think it’s sad that students burned the books. But if the books they burned were their own copies of the books, which the article did not address, in a grill made for burning things, I don’t see what the students could be disciplined for. It is within their first amendment right to burn their own possessions as long as they are not going against fire regulations or causing harm.
If they took others books or university owned books to burn then yes, I could see a consequence for that. If the set the fire in a place where I fire should not be set, then yes I could see a consequence for that.
I don’t agree with them. I don’t think they were correct to do it, but they have the right to do things I disagree with. That’s what we are about here.
The fact that they can’t see their own bias is more disturbing to me than the lack of consequences for burning their own books. Obviously the university needs to address diversity in a more meaningful way. But unfortunately I don’t think that message will ever reach a portion of the population. Unfortunately that portion of the population is bigger than I thought it was.
