Middle 7:40 to 3:40 High 8:15 to 4:15 I think that is way too late. It doesn't allow kids to have jobs and/or sports and still have enough time to do their homework. Agreed. I have to drop my son off at 6:15 AM for football practice and when he has away games often doesn’t get home until 10 or later. It’s a very long day!

At my school (which is technically K-12) elementary and middle school are 8:00-3 and high school is 8:30-3:30. We’re a charter school in NC. We don’t have any buses and we set our own schedule. We just have to have 1025 hours of instruction (or 185 days... we go by hours).

I think that since the main purpose of schools is education, that academics should be their first priority. Since scientific studies show that students learn better when they have a later start, it's a no brainer to me. Sports, jobs, and extracurriculars are secondary.
That said, our MS and HS tried to shift their hours later, but the teacher union wanted so much more money (there were no more hours -- just a time shift) that the whole thing was killed.
My kids would have loved to start later. Homeroom started at 7:15 and first class at 7:25. The bus came at 6:30 and it was really tough to get out the door when it was pitch black and cold in the winter time.

Our district doesn’t provide bus service for kids. Only kids with special needs get picked up in a bus. Also, all our sports teams usually start practice during 6th period and go for about an hour after school ends, so from 2-4. I am all for starting school later, especially for high school. They are up late as it is doing homework.

By the time it’s implemented, my kids will be done with school or driving on their own. While it’s good in theory, I could picture kids staying up later because they have more time in the morning. Also, lots of kids are dropped off early because LA traffic/work start times warrant that early drop off. Now it will just be a bigger crowd of unsupervised/minimally supervised kids hanging out at the school in the morning.

I dont know how highschoolers would have enough time to be involved in extracurricular activities, do homework and have a social life, while getting enough sleep with that schedule, although I do understand the theory behind it. Ds' school starts around 715 and is done around 220 (i dont know exactly because the times changed slightly after he graduated). My high school had the same hours

High school in Australia (we generally don't have middle schools) are usually from around 8.30/8.45am to around 3.30pm. Our kids manage sports trainings, work and homework fine. It's all about what you are used to. Starting before 8am seems crazy to me, especially given the sleep needs of teens.

Our school district is the 4 day week. So it's 8-430, tues-Friday. For everyone. All the grades are housed on the same block/campus. I typically had a flexible work schedule back in the day. I would have loved this schedule. More time with my kid! And the opportunity for a long weekend away at times when the rest of the masses weren't off as well. Disclaimer: before anyone shushes me, I only had one kid, he was easy to raise, and we were pretty close so I (mostly) enjoyed my time with him. Plus, he's nearing 30 so I see his childhood through deep rose colored glasses now.

In our district, the elementary schools start at 8:40, middle schools start at 7:50 and the high school starts at 7:40. They wanted to flip the start times here but the parents overwhelmingly shot that idea down. They didn’t want the little kids out so early in the morning when it is still dark outside and then potentially unsupervised after school so early in the afternoons.

High school starts here about 7:10. They get out at 2:45. Since my kids went to school with me when I taught elementary school, we left the house before 7 every morning. For my kids, they got up about 6:15 for their whole school career. I think they were just used to it, but elementary kids are much easier to teach earlier in the morning than HS kids. For us, it is a busing issue and some kids just have to start later than others.

I will say that it didn't give them time for shenanigans.

Our district flipped the start times this year, it’s now Elementary 7:50-2:30 Intermediate & Middle 8:45-3:30 High School 8:35-3:45
The district’s reasoning was that studies show high schoolers do better academically with a later start time. For the first year we were in this district, my high schooler started at 7:05. That was really rough. Several other districts in our area have switched and several more are considering it. I just have 1 high schooler now & our mornings run much smoother. There haven’t been any issues with sports, jobs or extracurriculars. My son rarely has homework, there is time built into each class period to work on assignments.

Oh, I never answered for middle schools. That is around 8am - 3pm and elementary is 850ish to 340ish. High school is 715-220, sk the kids can do extracurriculars, have jobs, do homework, and have something of a social life after school.

I don't think it should be a state wide decision, it should be a district decision. I live in a district where some kids have a bus ride at least one hour each way. It would be harder for rural districts.
I don't have kids 6-12 grade right now. I know the bus picks up 6-7 graders around 7:15. I think they start around 7:45.

fewer and fewer high school kids have after school jobs.. most employers out here (land of always available jobs).. won't hire anyone under 18.. too many restrictions. social life does not need to be a consideration during the week.. they can socialize on weekends.

Middle School (8-9) starts at 7:40, High School (10-12) at 7:50. Intermediate School (6-7) at 8:00. If my kids need to ride the bus (same bus for 6-12 grade) they have to catch it at 6:30.

Our high school starts at 8:30 or 8:00 depending on the day of week.
My kids however do jazz band which is zero period and start at 7:10am. They also do football and don’t get home until about 7pm. It’s a long day.

It varies by district here. In my district, it’s middle schoolers at 7:30, elementary at 8:00, and high school at 8:30. My youngest daughter’s private school is K-12 and they all have to be there by 8.

High school hours were 7:35-2:30. They changed to a later start time 2 yr. ago and now it's 8:09-2:39. The students love starting almost 40 min. later and only going 9 min. longer! Could they not round those timings to 8:10 to 2:40? The :09 bugs me lol

My girls are at a k-12 school that goes 8:20-3:20. I find that to be an early start time and I wish it was at 9.
My girls do early morning sports a couple of mornings a week which start at 7:15. They also do after school activities until 4:30/5 once a week.
Public school here is generally 9-3. It doesn’t matter what grade level. Most schools don’t bus kids in - kids walk, get rides, or take public transit, so that helps with start times.
Our administration encourages sleep and all levels. Dd10 is encouraged to get 10 hrs sleep per night and dd14 is encouraged to get 9 hrs per night.

My kids started between 8:00-9:10am in elementary school, 8am for all 3 middle schools, and 8:30am for HS.
I know 9am is late, but that was a great start time. We got up, got ready, and had time to play a game. I wasn’t yelling at them to get ready and we had time to walk the 3/4 mile to school. I really liked it. 8am wasn’t horrible, but that 7:30am start time was brutal. They went to school in the dark and came home in the dark (because of after school activities). I don’t think it’s healthy for teens to go months on end and not see the sun 5 days a week. Not to mention that teens need more sleep than we think.

My 10th grader starts at 9:30 am. He has "Learning Opportunity" at 9 am from Monday to Thursday. Students can use that time to get help from a teacher or finish up last minute homework. ETA - he is not allowed to miss the 9 am start time. So even if they do not have a need for extra help or homework time they are required to be at school, in a designated area for 9 am. And they finish for the day at 3:32 pm.

Here the little kids start later and as you get older you go to school earlier. DS, at the high school, gets on the bus at 7:20am and school starts at 7:40am and goes until 2:10pm. I was THRILLED he was on the bus at 7:20am because before he got to the HS, he was getting on the bus at 8:20am (middle school) which meant I wasn't getting to work until 9am.
When I was in HS, I had to take 2 public buses to get to school. I was up at 5am, out of the house by 6am.

We just moved to Illinois. Our High School is 8:00 - 2:53 on MWF (although the Jrs and Srs can get out at 2:20 on those days - the school calls the last 30 minutes PRIDE time and the older kids only stay if they need some remedial help or have homework questions). On T/R they are 8:30 - 2:53 with NO pride time. I have no idea why the last start 2 days a week. It is hard to get used to. LOL

DD's middle school starts at 7:15 and gets out at 2:12. On half days she gets out at like 10:30 in the morning. I have to drop her off at 6:45 every morning. It sucks by contrast DS's elementary doesn't start until 9:15 and goes until 4:10. He has to go to AM care in the mornings as I have to be at my desk by 8:1-8:30.
We get a break next year, high school starts at 7:43 and the 6th grade center starts at 8:13. Then when DS reaches middle we get to go back to the 7:15 start. I'm NOT looking forward to getting him up that early. He's NOT a morning person and as it is DD is militant about making sure she's on time. DS is less so.
