I don't particularly care much about continuing to live in Houston much longer. I've been here since the mid '80's. Grew up in a small town about 90 miles away. For now its convenient since its close to my mother (1.5 hrs) and to where my dd is going to school (1.5hrs) and I can be employed. I have a nice house...it was rebuilt 2 years ago after a fire. I got to design it just the way I wanted and I really do like it. However...I have often found myself daydreaming of where I want to move in the next...say...10 years. I will stay here as long as my mother is still alive (she is in her mid 80's). But after she passes, I will have the means to move (hopefully) wherever I want. Problem is...I'm not sure where that would be. I just know I don't want to spend the rest of my life here. Too much traffic. Its not the prettiest place on Earth. Too hot in summer. No real change of seasons. Its boring. Yes, there is theater, lots of places to go out to eat, cultural diversity, ect...but I'm not one to take part in all of that. I prefer to go exploring and do "nature" things. Anyways. I want to move to someplace quaint and quiet. Simple. With character and interest. Scenery. Mountains or sea....either is fine. Just not flat, boring land and concrete. Suggestions?

Maui is my dream destiny. Or Montana. I've never been to Montana, I just like the idea of it. I've been to Maui and loved how the air felt.
ETA: Whenever I pass a crisply painted, new apartment building, I have an odd urge to chuck all of the homeowner responsibilities and live in an apartment. But that urge comes with a fantasy that I'm a COMPLETELY different person.

I dream/think about it all the time. I absolutely hate where we live. We tried last year to relocate out of state but every job that DH applied for he got to the final interview and they picked a local person. We aren't the type to move without a job in place so for now...we are stuck.
I would love to move back home to Utah but my husband refuses.

I'd travel extensively, and see where you feel at home. Do you have friends who have moved away? It may make it easier to find a community that way.

I think about it all the time. I, too, live in the Houston area and my reasons are pretty much spot on to what you said. I have always wanted to visit North Carolina and Montana sounds pretty too. I just don't know if I could handle the winters in Montana. Oh to dream!

Do you mind winter? I am always plugging my state...Vermont. We have beautiful scenery, simple living and/or small town living, extremely rural living, one small city living, a great music scene, a great craft beer and cheese scene, lake Champlain, many small lakes and ponds, mountains, rivers, farms lands, trees, with in hours of Montreal, Boston, NH mountains and sea coast, Maine sea coast. Downfalls are it is not cheap and if you are not a winter person, among other things...but nothing is absolutely perfect.

Dh and I dream of moving back to Colorado some day. Oregon would be my second choice. I lived there 5 years.

Totally understand.I grew up in Phoenix, lived as an adult for a couple of years in NJ and Denver, then back to Phoenix, then Minneapolis/St Paul for the last 19 years. When DD13 graduates from high school and is settled, I want to move.
I don't mind snow but not this harsh of a winter. I like mountains and the four seasons. So I've got some time to figure it out, but I'm considering Portland or somewhere in Oregon, Salt Lake City, Albuquerque, Prescott or Flagstaff AZ, or possibly CO Springs. I'd consider other places too.
Good luck

I honestly thought that we would stay in our community and our house forever but as we've gotten older, we've begun to talk about moving somewhere warmer. Also, it would be nice to not have so many home-owner responsibilities. I love our home but one of our girls now lives several hours from us (on the warmer side of the State) and our other daughter who currently lives in New York, is planning to move back "home" (to the other side of our State) in the next 2-3 years.
I keep thinking that once grandbabies arrive, I would love to be closer. I also have a few years yet until retirement so at this point, it's just a dream...

I did it. I picked up and moved from Atlanta to Santa Fe for no reason other than I wanted to move.
That said, I highly recommend Santa Fe, except property is expensive here. Otherwise, I love it.

I really would not suggest Montana to move to. The places that are affordable probably won’t have great health care available. Bozeman school district is now considering building affordable housing for teachers. And people are looking for housing that is almost an hour to two hours away. Missoula has always been expensive and I see that People are building out in French town. Butte is dying. Anything around flathead lake area is out of reach except for the rich. I don’t know anybody in the Billings area, but I have always thought of that area as rather flat and not as exciting as the west side of the state. Everybody is complaining of taxes and utility fees, you need heat almost everyday in most parts of the state Yes I am exaggerating that, but I have seen it snow in July.
I have friends looking at Nevada?

Well, that’s how we ended up in Houston 22 years ago. We just up and moved. 😂
I think we’ll always have some kind of home here in retirement (at this point we’re thinking condo inside the loop in a walkable area) but we plan to spend the hot months in Maine. We up and bought a house there (which we mostly rent out at this time) a few years ago.

Hopefully this will be me someday! lol.... I have always enjoyed New Mexico/Colorado.....The only thing about those areas though, is that I'm not a fan of the "architecture" that is so prevalent there. The adobe ect. Are there any areas that are not so into that style there? I tend to gravitate more to the old, shabby chic, English cottage vibe. I love Hawaii too. But I'm just thinking Hawaii is too inconvenient when/if I become a grandma.... Vermont has actually been one of the places I daydream of. I remember all the old Newhart shows and its seems like such a perfect place for what I'm thinking I want.

I gave up my career, hopped on a bus and didn’t stop until I hit an ocean. I was young, though, and quickly developed a Plan B.

It is the The Waybury Inn. We don’t have a Larry, Darryl, and my other brother Darryl, though. Well we probably do, but I won’t scare you right off from considering us.

No never but now I’m dreaming of it. I’ve been looking at Portland or Canon Beach for a while. It might be too grey up there though.... I’ve been traveling a lot lately and always look at real estate online at least. There are so many great places but I do worry I’d be a wimp in bad weather.

I’ve moved a lot in my life, so have been able experience living in a lot of different places. Some I liked more than others. We moved to Nebraska for DH’s job 14 years ago. I did not expect to love it here like I do. If I had to pick another place, I would choose closer to the Rockies or New England (not a big city).

I would love to move somewhere like East Tennessee or Land Between the Lakes Kentucky. Such beautiful scenery. DH vows that he is never moving all of our crap again, LOL.

We have thought of moving, but now that husband has a terminal case of cancer we are kind of stuck. I probably will move closer to Houston and family and friends there when I'm on my own. Our current house would make a great rental and help support me there.

I've seen quite a bit of the English cottage look there around Denver. However, it sounds like somewhere east like Vermont might be a better fit. I would love to visit Vermont again. It's so pretty there.

I’ve only been there once, a couple of years ago in a road trip, but it did not change my mind. It was beautiful! We’ve lived in Texas our entire lives and we’re both over it. The kids all seem to be headed for the east coast, and there’s a good chance we’ll follow in a few years if that’s how it all shakes out. The only problem is that my professional license is limited to Texas, and it won’t be easy to start over in a new place. DH’s job is very portable, though.

If bad weather concerns you, absolutely do not think about Cannon Beach. I adore it and spend a ton of time there but the Oregon coast is oppressively grey and gloomy much of the year. It is not for everyone.

No, we have always lived in the N Tx area and probably alway will as we own a business here & have grandkids. But my dad owns a ranch in the Hill Country west of Austin & when I’m there, sitting on his porch watching the deer, turkeys & other wildlife, I think I’d like to stay.

I’ve moved plenty in my life due to my dad’s banking career and then 20+ years as a military spouse but I still enjoy going to new places, finding a new home, etc. I’ll probably work another 3-5 years but will definitely consider picking up and going somewhere warmer in retirement. My kids probably won’t settle in our home province so I’d likely be flying to visit them anyway so what does it matter where I fly from lol.

I dream of just packing up my car and disappearing into the world. Starting a new life. Changing every single thing.
However, I have two kids I would NEVER leave.
I would love to live in a small town in New England.

I live in the foothills of the Rockies. We have four seasons. Sometimes all four in one day. It isn't quaint or simple (it's a city), but there are so many little towns within a short drive from here that we try to get out and enjoy them. This weekend we went to an old mining town about 7 minutes from the gambling town we visit every few months. It was like we entered a different world.
We have hiking for days just 10 minutes from our house. It is the perfect place (for me). We live in the city and are only a very short drive from a completely different world. We have been to gorgeous, breathtaking beaches in Hawaii and the Caribbean, but I always think that where I live is just as spectacular.

I cannot imagine living somewhere else - I love my area. I can see that at some point, we would purchase a second home on a beach somewhere but I doubt it would ever be our 'main' home.
