My first job was at a family restaurant called Shoney's (which are still around I guess in the South).. anyways, I grew up around the Shoney's family, my dad was some kind of regional manager and when I turned 16 I got a job there (this was back in the late 1980s). Kale was something that we used to decorate the salad bar with. You didn't eat it.. ICK... Now I see that it is considered very healthy (and I am not that at all!!).. but the other day I bought a pre-made salad which I thought was spinach and romaine lettuce, but it wasn't it had a ton of Kale in it. I thought, okay, let's be adventurous. (which I am NOT)... I took a big bite out of my salad and YEAH... I thought I was eating decoration from the salad bar.. yuck yuck yuck... Now I know there are going to be some Peas that will say I am crazy.. haha.. Just give me back my regular old salad.... Spinach (which is a stretch for me, but I will eat it.. raw only) and romaine or iceberg. But don't be telling me this Kale stuff is delish.. cause it's not.

I try to like it but . . .
I rubbed oil into it, sprinkled with salt and pepper and baked it to make crisps. They were ok but I’m trying to use less oil and salt, so any goodness must be negated surely.

Kale and garlic were made for each other.

Raw kale needs to be 'massaged' with an acidic dressing and left to sit for a few minutes to be really edible IMO. This makes it less tough and bitter.
Cooked kale also needs salt and acid of some kind. I'm eating my lunch right now - whole wheat spaghetti with chickpeas, shredded kale, preserved lemon and a little queso fresco. Delicious! The bitter kale really sings with the salt of the crumbled cheese and the tang of the lemon.

I know, right? DH likes to buy those salad kits from Costco that have a bunch of chopped kale in them. Blech, nasty! It’s so tough and it always gets stuck between my teeth in the back. I’m not a fan.

I'm Italian and both of my parents used kale in various dishes, most often in soup or sauteed with onion and garlic to be served on top of polenta. Then we grew it and fresh kale salad is delicious. Do the massage thing and put other items that you will eat in the salad and you might like it more.

So funny you posted this. Literally, yesterday, I was talking to my mom and said "I don't get the whole kale thing - it is for decorating salad bars - not for eating"

I like kale a lot ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I prefer lacinato kale to curly kale, though. And it has to be properly prepared.

I worked at Applebee’s in college and we used kale to decorate the plates as well. I had no idea that people did actually eat it. I love chopped kale salads now, and sometimes eat it with my eggs or in smoothies.

Tastes like dirt no matter how you prepare it. I gave it a chance — one summer we had kale in EVERY Single CSA box. I tried it in least 10 different ways. 🤢🤢🤢

I wasn't a big kale fan until I had it on a food walking tour in Chicago. What magic did they use to make it taste so good?! We went back to the restaurant after the tour and they were happy to share their massage technique and it is game changing. You actually see the texture and color of the leaves change in minutes.

There is a prepared salad sold in the grocery store here. "Sweet kale" is the name of that mix. It comes with a dressing. It is very good. I would have never tried it, but a friend brought it to a luncheon and I liked it.
Otherwise, I don't care for it. I don't like arugula either.

I love kale. It's definetely better than just romaine or iceberg (yuck!) lettuce. We mix it with spinach, and then add other veggies to the salad. We also love it cooked. It's more flavorful than just the regular watery iceberg lettuce.

I agree iceberg is just not much to it... but Kale.. nope.. would eat iceberg any day over it.. PS.. I worked at Applebee's too!!! Although for a short time. I don't remember it as a garnish. But Shoney's sure did.. They LOVED to use Kale.

One of my favorite salads is the kale salad with salmon from a local pub. Kale, sunflower seeds, dried cranberries with a light coating of a lemony vinaigrette. Simple perfection.

Similar to your story....I was a waitress at Red Lobster in the late 80's, and kale was put on every entree as a decoration, too (with a wedge of fresh lemon).
We've tried to eat kale in salads / put it in smoothies / make "chips" by coating with olive oil and garlic, but they're all a big NO! I've read that if you massage it, it makes it much more palatable, but we still didn't like it. We LOVE spinach, though---raw or sauteed.

Kale is super grody. My husband loves it. Me and the kids absolutely refuse to eat it in all it’s forms.

In fact, whenever I don't see a little garnishment of some sort the plate looks naked to me. I can't remember where, maybe Texas Roadhouse? I think some steak place, a piece of meat and a potato on a plate with nothing else.. I always think to myself, something is missing.... It's the damn Kale. HAHA

Seriously riiight! I don't care how it's prepared, kale is revolting. It is, at best, a decoration. Though I admit the following is about the most amazing kale recipe I've found: In a very large pot, heat olive oil and saute garlic over heat for about 1 minute, but not until it's browned. Rinse kale and pat dry. Chuck in trash bin. Add spinach, salt and pepper to the pot, toss it with the garlic and oil, cover the pot, and cook it for 2 minutes. Uncover the pot, turn the heat on high, and cook the spinach for another minute, stirring with a wooden spoon, until all the spinach is wilted. Using a slotted spoon, lift the spinach to a serving bowl and top with butter, a squeeze of lemon, and a sprinkling of sea salt. Serve hot.

Mmmmmm, kale! Love it raw in salad, love it in my Zuppa Toscana. Used to grow several varieties for ourselves and our chickens. Favorites are the curlies and the Russian Red.

I buy this sweet kale salad that I think has no real kale in it. I hate kale and there can’t be any kale in it. I think it’s just a delicious coleslaw kit with awesome dressing. Not real kale.

If anything gets massaged in this house it will be me, and not a bunch of disgusting kale! I've tried it kale a few times but I'm not about to torture myself any more. Icky, icky stuff!

Massaging kale means to actually work it with your hands and a bit of acid, and that only 'needs' to be done with larger pieces. Shredded or chopped kale will macerate on its own if left to stand for a bit in its dressing/acid.

I’ve tried kale, kale chips, etc. blech!!
But I do love the sweet kale salad in a bag kit that comes with poppyseed dressing, cranberries and pumpkin seeds. The dressing disguises the taste of the kale nicely!
