One thing that I read (I think in a comment from Adam kinzinger) is that the money for Ukraine isn’t just cash. It is putting a dollar amount on the weapons and other items that we are giving them. Most of which are older and being phased out, and that are/were made in the US. So the $$ that we see are a little misleading. I also think that there is a benefit to us in helping Ukraine. Someone on tv said recently that it was the best defense strategy we have had in a long time, and I agree with that. As for Israel, I think they should have been held accountable for the way they treated Palestinians decades ago. The whole idea of Israel as a Jewish nation state was based on the idea of ethnic cleansing and that hasn’t gone well. At times I want us to just cut them off completely, but I know that gives the other countries in the region license to attack. But with the current Israeli government and seeing Israelis blocking food and other aid from going to Gaza, I am getting more pissed. I’m not happy that we are supporting them and getting the blame for their actions. Netanyahu is going to take Israel down and the US with him when Trump wins due to biden’s support for Israel. I would be ok with giving them what they need for the iron dome but nothing more. Wait, you think that Israel was “based on the idea of ethnic cleansing”?! WTF have you been reading? Whatever it is, it isn’t any kind of accurate history of the region. I’m kind of shocked others haven’t been calling you out for this crap. And this is just, what, a few weeks? a few months? since you came to the peas saying you knew nothing about the region. Many of us put a lot of time into responding to your questions. Clearly you have done some picking and choosing about whom you’re going to listen to. Anyone who would believe and publicly state such a thing is indeed an anti-Semite. Thank you, Lucy. I keep wanting to come back to the pod and every time I check in, I come across another shit-I-listened-to-a-podcast post by Kristin and I leave again. Coming from a person who posts multiple “help-woe-is-me me” threads when her son has a broken arm, or her dog pees on the floor, or she can’t sleep for the anxiety that owning a pet causes her. Everything little piddling inconvenience that the rest of the world lives through and copes with send her to a variety of sources for help with, no matter how trivial the concern. I can’t imagine her life if her family members were in a war zone or served in any military - even the USA’s. No regard for people who have family members in Israel, including serving in the army. Fuck that. iamkristinl16 , you have become a raving anti-Semite, don’t kid yourself, grasping for any straw that you think you understand and then rushing back here for support. I’m back out again for a long time.

I'm trying to do a lot of listening on this because I am embarrassingly uninformed on the long history between Israel and Palestine. I appreciate Elaine for sharing during what must be a very painful and scary time. It's not your job to do to educate us on this subject, but when you share, I appreciate it. I unfollowed a few left-leaning social media accounts because they refuse to condemn Hamas. Black Lives Matter went as far as to release a statement saying Hamas terror attack was "a desperate act of self defense." WTF?! What the actual f@ck! There is NEVER a reason to rape women, kill and decapitate innocent children and elderly people. And their reason was to say they are marginalized like Palestinians. Well I am Latina, also a marginalized group and I sure as hell will never support terrorists. You can have sympathy for the innocent people in Palestine who are caught in the middle and still condemn Hamas and the terrorist acts that they committed. And you can still dislike a government, but still show compassion and support for the people of Israel. I just don't understand how anyone can take the side of Hamas without being antisemites themselves. Sadly, there is a long history of antisemitism in the Black communities of the USA. Like with what is going on in Israel, a lot of it was stoked by those with political agendas like Louis Farrakhan, who wanted to ignite and keep strong an antisemitic bias in their bases. Here is an op ed piece - OP ED (not research journalism) - that was written by a Black man and came out in the wake of the NBA antisemitic comments being made by star players: www.usatoday.com/story/sports/columnist/mike-freeman/2022/11/02/black-athletes-community-blind-spot-antisemitism/10652472002/ Since it is an Op Ed, take of it what you will. I have no doubt that there are plenty of op eds that defend DeSean & Stephen Jackson, Kyrie and Kanye. But know that the expressed animosity from Black leaders like Farrakhan are well known to Jews in this country and have been for decades. Again, why would Jews find the USA as a safe haven?

Trump has overwhelming support - by double-digits over other GOP candidates. How are we doing better? Unless his legal troubles prevent him from running for president, the majority of GOP voters are buying the white supremacy he is selling and will nominate him for president. Where do you think I was born and spent the first 23 years of my life? California. That you were ignorant of Jewish surnames, etc., has nothing to do with being from the West Coast. The public schools I attended in Los Angeles were overwhelmingly Jewish - just ask oh yvonne , we went to the same jr. high, before she moved to another neighborhood, but still with plenty of Jews. Not beheading people doesn’t make this a safe haven. I can’t believe that I have to have this conversation with you. If it comes down to what you will embrace spending funding on, well, I guess that is your bottom line. That doesn’t make a country that is currently glorifying anti-semites as “patriots” or amazing athletes or talented musicians a welcoming place. Please don’t dictate my reality, because you really truly have no. clue. what it is to be Jewish here. If I tried to tell you how Latinx people should feel, I would hope that you would shut me down, because it would be beyond offensive. I'm sorry Elaine - truly sorry. I am truly open to any and all solutions. I'm just waiting - I hope you know many of us are truly horrified with what is happening. I grew up in the Bay Area and you can dismiss my reality - but what does it help? I am not pretending to understand the Jewish experience - I am just trying to find an end to to the horror that has been the reality of my entire adulthood. I have been trying to figure out what this means. I went to college in the Bay Area. I owned my first home in the Bay Area. My sister went to college and law school in the Bay Area. One of my cousins (born in L.A.) went to college in the Bay Area. I never met anyone ignorant regarding Jews and their culture, and surnames, in the Bay Area. Your reality is certainly your reality, I will not dismiss it, but regarding knowledge of Jewish issues it was/is not typical of the Bay Area as a whole. You may want to ask yourself why. Or not. I honestly don’t care. As to why you are somehow keep bringing up the past 40 years for Israel, that, I have no clue. Israel was founded 75 years ago in 1948. I grew up knowing that, even though I am 60. I remain flummoxed as to why you think offering Israeli Jews $ to come here is culturally appropriate, defensible, and doesn’t play into all the antisemitic tropes ever created in the history of time related to Jews and money.

Hold the Arab countries surrounding Israel, who confiscated all the lands and property of Jews who were forced to leave with the creation of Israel, responsible for helping the Palestinians. Shine the light on the fact that those surrounding countries don’t offer real support, beyond bombing Israel, with the assets they seized, instead, choosing to keep the Palestinians in poverty and without the infrastructure that would allow for the Palestinians’ independence for those countries’ own political agendas. Instead of relying on Israel to provide electricity, water, etc., maybe use their funds and influence to help the Palestinians actually build their own infrastructure - they have had 75 years to do so.

Why would they come to a country where Nazis are marching openly and the President who said there were “fine people” at one of the marches? Where the top Republican candidate is that President? The one who encouraged White Supremacists to attack the capitol and try to overthrow the US government? Where anti-semitism is growing? Where hate crimes against Jews here are growing at an alarming rate? To pretend that the USA is some safe haven for Jews is laughable. If I weren’t tied here due to the fact that my special needs sons wouldn’t be able to successfully immigrate, I would consider picking up and moving to Israel and joining my family (who are dual-citizens and aren’t interested in moving here). 🇮🇱 I never considered that before Trump, but after the march in Charlottesville (which never in my wildest nightmares would I have imagined Nazis marching an hour from where my boys slept) and what has happened in our country since then, I have those longings now. Trump was an abomination I will never excuse. I hope we will continue to do better. There's no doubt you can find too much history of antisemitism here - I don't excuse or pretend it doesn't exist. I'm a west coaster - and will always have a bit of that bias of people who for the most part are more ignorant than antisemite - I really did grow up not even understanding that a Cohen or Goldman were Jewish. If not here where? I'm not pretending, but a friend just brough 7 Israelis here. Seriously - they just posted on Facebook asking for support. I don't think we're perfect, but right now we're not beheading people. If someone has a better answer, I am 10000% supportive of it - and would whole heartedly embrace spending our 7 billion dollars supporting people a different way - this isn't working - and it hasn't worked for my entire lifetime. Trump has overwhelming support - by double-digits over other GOP candidates. How are we doing better? For what? To leave Israel? That is what I'm suggesting, but am open to any and all suggestions that will end the violence. We send billions every year and there has never been stability. Can we better support those who escaped/survived the violence of WWII and their descendants? We basically threw those who had been victimized and oppressed into an area of conflict with little more than the promise of weaponry to support them. How does this end - honestly how does this end? Why would they come to a country where Nazis are marching openly and the President at the time said there were “fine people” at one of the marches? elaine - sports fan for sure take a back seat for the week. Dd is a competitive gymnast so I’d like to keep her in for the week but we can also make the missed sessions up over the next few weeks. Her coach knows what’s going on with dad. The kids are both very independent so he won’t need to do much for them. I’ll figure out the drain bag holder I guess. They seem easy enough to sew up if I need to make one quickly. snyder my mom had breast cancer surgery with a few lymph nodes removed and she did wear a sleeve from time to time. I asked DH if he would need a sleeve and he didn’t know. I didn’t go to the most recent surgeon appt and he didn’t ask apparently. Men! I will ask about physical therapy. I know he will have exercises he needs to do to regain range of motion. I used this set of pouch drain bulb holders: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08CVDFXL9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1Now, I had drains in for a full 8 weeks after my surgery and the belt was vital for when I was out and about in public after the first two weeks. But, I was unusual, and most people have their drains out in 1-2 weeks. So, you can decide what is best. With the lymph nodes taken on the left side of my chest, I can no longer get shots, IVs placed, or blood pressure taken on that side. Most nurses automatically go to the left side first, since I am right-handed, so have the conversation about the nodes being removed more frequently than I would have thought I would. Hopefully, your dh will see a specialist in lymphedema who can give recommendations. I do know that they actually measured my arm and leg on my left side before surgery and then repeatedly over the first year post-surgery to see if I was having lymphedema issues. They should also be able to recommend whatever compression garments (sleeve, socks, etc) he may need.

First off, (((hugs))). How scary for both of you. He will be most comfortable with a drain belt with a pouch for the collection bulb, although he can pin it to his top. That said, he will need something to hold it in the shower. I had a waterproof belt for that.
If he will have 1-2 drains, chances are he will need to sleep with his chest elevated. We bought an adjustable frame bed when we found out I had cancer, and I wouldn’t have made it through all the recoveries without it. But, if you have a recliner for him, that could work.
Finally, I mean this gently, it may be the best to prepare your children that sports may not happen next week. You don’t do children a service by placing their sports ahead of their father’s health for a couple of weeks. Literally, it is an okay lesson that family and health are more important. Being alone is probably okay, but depending on how needy the younger child is, I don’t know if I’d put it on him to be responsible for her 3-5 hours a day that first week.

I think it is really strange and sad that she doesn’t have health insurance. I would have thought she was set financially. Perhaps she was given poor financial advice with investments when she did have money coming in. It makes me sad if she is struggling financially now, in addition to struggling with this unusual pneumonia. That will just add to her stress levels and that won’t help her get better. When she was an Olympic athlete, all USA athletes HAD to be “amateurs,” meaning that they could not be paid. They could receive no monetary payment for their sport while competing at the Olympic level. That changed in 1988 when athletes could be professionals. So, unlike current Olympic athletes, she wasn’t able to earn a living being a gymnast. Nor, at the time, were sponsorships the lucrative deals they are now, although, even now, for gymnasts, I don’t think corporate sponsorships are the same as for athletes who use things like shoes (think Nikes) or skis or other equipment that can be used recreationally in their sports in brands sold to the masses.

The whole situation is awful. My friend’s nephew & wife were killed but they hid their twin babies first. The babies were found 12 hours later. Her dh already left to help with his elderly parents because his sister is now caring for the babies. I can’t even fathom going there during this but when it’s your family you just do it. 😭😭😭 I have no words. May their memories be for a blessing.

This. Very much this. That is Hamas’ manifesto. It isn’t complicated and it hasn’t changed. I think that people are confusing Hamas - a terrorist organization like Al Qaeda - with a Palestinian governing body, which it has never been, nor disguised itself as. I read that Hamas is the governing body of Palestine. Are you saying that isn’t true? Or that they aren’t “really” governing the way that you would think, even though technically they are said to be the leaders of Palestinians? ETA scrappinghappy thanks for sharing that. Most of the comments that I see on social media supporting Palestine refer to the way that Israel treats Palestinians, and that they need to be free (I assume from the control of Israel). They don’t necessarily state support for Hamas. I hadn’t heard of their covenant until tonight on cnn but after reading it above it definitely is clear that their attacks are likely not meant to simply get land back or get better treatment for the people. I think Palestinians need to be free from Hamas but also more humane treatment by Israel. How do average Palestinians feel about the situation and Hamas? Yes.

He is allowing death and famine to occur ubder his watch. He is super controling and isnt helping. He is using his people to get what he wants. Hamas isn’t a person, it is an organization.

I feel this way as well. The history is very complicated and can't be ignored, even though obviously this week Hamas was the aggressor. I don't understand why it has been that *we* need to support everything Israel does or else be considered to be anti-Semitic. IMO, Israel has not always been innocent and has not treated Palestinians well, which is likely what has been a big part of what is happening now. However, Hamas also has an anti-Jewish section of their manifesto so to speak, so it doesn't seem like their hatred is only aimed at Israeli's (which is what makes me also fear for actions around the world). I feel horribly for the innocent people on both sides and wish there could be a good solution that would make both sides happy. At this point I am not sure what exactly the goal of Hamas is. The same as it’s always been. Destroy the State of Israel and murder all the Jews. This. Very much this. That is Hamas’ manifesto. It isn’t complicated and it hasn’t changed. I think that people are confusing Hamas - a terrorist organization like Al Qaeda - with a Palestinian governing body, which it has never been, nor disguised itself as.

That was one of the most blatant examples of a poor coaching decision I have seen. I mean, awful. It will be used as a teaching moment in training rooms around the country as what NOT to do in that situation and to emphasize why the victory formation exists. That happened years ago in a 49er NFC championship game where all we had to do was take a knee but they continued to run the ball and Roger Craig coughed it up. Our hopes for a Super Bowl win that year were snuffed. I bet none of the current college players were even born when Roger Craig was in the NFL (he was a force to be reckoned with). Actually, I just looked it up (retired in 1993), and, for the players (none who were alive at the time), some of their parents were probably in middle or high school. 😂

Crazy ending to the Miami/Ga Tech game! What was the Miami coach thinking when he called for a play with less than a minute to go when taking a knee would seal the win? It's all anyone is talking about on my sport's apps! I took a nap after the Ohio State game, so was actually up and watching that game until my dh got back from walking the dogs and we’d go up to bed. He came in and we watched the last few minutes together completely stunned! My dh is a Wake Forest alum, so he follows the ACC. That was one of the most blatant examples of a poor coaching decision I have seen. I mean, awful. It will be used as a teaching moment in training rooms around the country as what NOT to do in that situation and to emphasize why the victory formation exists. So, yay!, I guess for Miami’s coach for providing all of college football with a teaching moment. I felt awful for Miami’s players who were shown crying on the sidelines. It must have been, and will continue to be, heartbreaking for them.

Doesn’t Israel have a much more sophisticated military than Hamas? I’m having a hard time understanding why this would be a long drawn out war like Israel is saying. Or why the assumption is that the US will need to send them all kinds of money and aid. Hamas has taken hundreds of hostages, including children. Unless Israel wants to sacrifice those hostages, it will take a long time to extract them.

I guess I would say that Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah (and all the remakes of it, including Kd Lang’s) are not the “original” Hallelujah. Musically, I’d credit that to Handel.
However, the modern song “Hallelujah” by Cohen isn’t religious, IMO, although, as already discussed, references biblical stories to illustrate metaphors.
