So here we are on January 1st and I decided to do OLW and I can’t pick a word. The word that keeps coming is control but it feels so negative. I am a bit of a Type A (alright not a bit-a lot) and need to transition into a new phase of life. Our boys are young men now and I need to stop worrying about some of their choices as much and control the things I can. I’d also like to give up control of some of the planning of our life (we are currently on vacation and I planned the whole thing and I plan pretty much our day to day.). My husband works long hours and I just figure things out for our home. I’m trying to let things go. I don’t think ‘control’ Necessarily is a negative word. Someone has to plan & prepare & keep chaos at bay. It’s very easy to be the other half of a partnership and allow the other person ‘control’, especially if that’s their personality. However, It’s hard to suddenly ‘take charge’ after being the non controlling partner so I’m sure letting go will be equally difficult. I think control or letting go are both fine words and will encourage you to what you want to work on. The same way that enable may or may not be negative, but in order for you to let go of control your going to have to find ways to enable or encourage those around you to take charge here or there. You might have to offer guidance or direction when letting go of control and you also need to retain enough control to maintain balance. Happy 2020 to you and best of luck working with whichever word you choose.

Introduce yourself! Hey, I’m a 41 year old wife and Mom of 2. I’m Canadian but I have never heard anyone say “aboot”, although we really do say “eh” a lot.
What is your word for 2020? Heal
Why did you choose that word? 2019 might have been the worst year of my life... my husband and I were both laid off in the spring/summer (I found a job in November, but he is still looking), my Grandmother was diagnosed with cancer, two healthy family members were hospitalized, my husband is in chronic pain because we can’t afford his very expensive medication without a group benefit plan, we both have depression and anxiety that has been exacerbated by the trauma of this year.... Heal really represents what I am looking for in 2020.
Is this your first year participating in OLW? No
If not, what words have you had in the past? Brave, Me, Less, Joy
Which of your prior words was your favorite/least favorite and why? I loved the idea of Joy last year, but really I had nothing to be joyful about. I may try that word again in the future. The year of Me was a pretty good year.
Are you signed up for Ali's class? Yes
Are you participating in any other similar projects/check-ins online or elsewhere? I’m doing a 20 goals in 2020 project with some friends.
How are you planning on documenting your word? 6x8 album. I just finished up January’s prompt.

Introduce yourself! (e.g. name/where you are from/who you live with/occupation/fun facts about you/general age, etc... whatever you want to share to help everyone get to know you!) Hi, everyone! My name is Dena. I was born here in Hawai'i and have lived here all of my life. I just turned 48 on Dec. 29! I am married with two daughters. One is 23 and the other is 9. After I had my second daughter, I quit working and am now a SAHM. I went back to school when she started kindergarten. I'll be done with my second A/A after I complete Math next semester (not looking forward to it!). Fun fact? Hmmmm.. I've been a Pea for about 18 years or more! Sadly, I've always been more of a scrapbook supply collector rather than an actual scrapbooker!
What is your word for 2020? I initially was surprised and pleased, thinking that I came up with a word so early and so easily. It was going to be CREATE because I was going to challenge myself to create more in 2020. I was hoping to actually spend time scrapbooking, practicing my photography, cooking and baking, and learning the piano, among other things! But then I saw Ali's post and her word LESS, and I feel like it's speaking to me! I definitely want to do LESS in 2020: less wasting of money so we can save for other things, less wasting of time so I can spend more time being productive, eating less bad stuff so I can be healthier, less time spent goofing up and more time exercising. Less of some things mean I will be able to do more of other things, and those are things that matter. However, part of me hesitates to use this word because I kind of feel like I'm copying Ali. LOL Yet, I really, truly feel like this word resonates with me. I also feel like this word is more meaningful to me than CREATE.
Why did you choose that word? Ok, I think I answered this in the previous question. LOL
Is this your first year participating in OLW? I don't know that I even want to call it participating because I always do the first several months and then fizzle.
If not, what words have you had in the past? Bloom and Breathe
Which of your prior words was your favorite/least favorite and why? Breathe was because I really needed to find breathing room. I said NO to people more often and I also took on less commitments. Bloom didn't work so much for me as I really just lost interest in the project almost as soon as it started.
Are you signed up for Ali's class? Since I signed up for two classes in the past and never finished them, I figured I shouldn't do it again and just turn back to the previous ones for inspiration. Why pay for a third when I have resources to do OLW without paying more to do so. (See, LESS money and LESS workshops to pay for that will go to waste!)
Are you participating in any other similar projects/check-ins online or elsewhere? No
How are you planning on documenting your word? I haven't decided. I have to look at what size the printouts were last year. I don't even remember what size album I was using, possibly 6 x 8. I do think I would use that size regardless, definitely not bigger and not smaller like a 3 x 8.[/div]
ETA: I'm so glad I typed this out because I realized that LESS makes me feel a lot happier than CREATE does! Excuse my language, but I was just telling an old friend of mine today that, the older I get, the less EFFS I have to give! LOL Our conversation was about living life the way we want to without caring what other people think. I'm going with LESS!!! Squeeee!!!!
ETA again: Ok, you guys! If this isn't a sign, I don't know what is! I jumped on Facebook after I posted and was checking out one of my favorite pages called No Sidebar. There was a quote: "The need for less often results in a life of more." I LOVE THAT!!! So using that in my album!

kaybree sorry to hear how rough 2019 was for you, but hopefully 2020 will bring a lot of healing for you! Heal sounds like the perfect word. prettyprettypaper if less is speaking to you, I say go with it! Who cares if Ali is doing the same word? I'm sure it will mean different things for each of you because you have different lives. This year I chose a word that Ali has done in the past which is something I've never done before and I definitely didn't do it intentionally, but now that I know that is my word I am kinda excited to look back over her prompts for it and see if I can get more insight into my word. I've always enjoyed trying to connect with other members in the FB group that have the same word, so why would it be any different if Ali has it? Also, the print outs in the class are 6x8, that is the size album Ali creates.

Also, the print outs in the class are 6x8, that is the size album Ali creates. The only reason I had an issue with Ali and I having the same word this year is because, prior to me seeing her post, the word LESS was never on my radar. Therefore, I wanted to make sure the word truly had more meaning to me than the word that had been on my mind for about two months now. Whether it was her or someone else, I still would have had the same hesitation. And, yes -- I've shared the same word before with other people in the groups, but they were words that I had already been contemplating on my own.
I pulled my album and it's actually an 8.5 x 11 Heidi Swapp album. That reminded me that I had an issue with one of her printouts because I had to resize them so they'd fit the card pockets for the 8.5 x 11 size. I remember it being a little bit of a pain. I may just continue on with this album since I have plenty of pages for it.

Introduce yourself! My name is Bree, I am a mom to four kids and live in the Pacific NW.
What is your word for 2020? Intentional. I was thinking of less for most of December, but intentional came to my mind on December 31st, so...
Why did you choose that word? I need to think things out and plan more. Taking a few seconds before getting out of the car to remember my reusuable bags, going to the store early in the day so it's not as busy, making better meal plans, not wasting the day away online, planning to buy/make the birthday cards early in the month and not the day before the birthday etc. On Sunday afternoon I will sit down and lay out my week in advance, that is step 1.
Is this your first year participating in OLW? No
If not, what words have you had in the past? Adventure, words, light, and create
Which of your prior words was your favorite/least favorite and why? Well I'm still feeling the repercussions of adventure (I started volunteering) and we did a lot of new things/went new places so that was probably my favorite. Create (last year) was a complete failure... I was choosing between create and balance and should have chosen balance... Words was good, but not being a verb or adjective and the year I took the OLW class it didn't fit the prompts...
Are you signed up for Ali's class? No, I never finished the year I paid for...
Are you participating in any other similar projects/check-ins online or elsewhere? No
How are you planning on documenting your word? An occasional Instagram post here and there... maybe a scrapbook page at the end of the year if the word is a success.

Introduce yourself! Hello! I'm Charlotte, living in London with my two kiddos and husband, I work in Wesminster part time and spend the rest of my time cooking, reading and taking photos (and napping too, if I'm really honest). I'm trying to get a seasonal living project (better than it sounds!) off the ground with a friend at the moment, which is getting all the creative juices flowing. What is your word for 2020? NOURISH
Why did you choose that word? I've been feeling a little sluggish and emptty recently, not right at all. Also my parenting feels like it's going off course a little. I get too angry too quickly. Basicially my soul, body and family need a bit more love and attention. While I was looking for my word "cultivate" kept popping up, but all I could think of was Beggy Higgins, so that word went straight into the bin, haha.
Is this your first year participating in OLW? Nope
If not, what words have you had in the past? Courage, Flourish, Focus, Go
Which of your prior words was your favorite/least favorite and why? Courage was by the far the best, it really sparked and really helped drive some good things in my life. Flourish was meh, just didn't work so well.
Are you signed up for Ali's class? Yes, I quite like the community it creates and I really liked the weekly emails Ali sent too.
Are you participating in any other similar projects/check-ins online or elsewhere? I really, really like the look of Susannah Conway's Unravelled Heart course. Not directly related to a word, but as she's the person who's course helps me choose a word every year, I think it would tie in nicely. Also she is awesome. But it's a monthly cost that is too much for me at the moment.
How are you planning on documenting your word? 6x8 I think, although I usually stop documenting by the summer so I might just use some card and binder rings with a few page protectors thrown in for good measure.

How long did it take everyone to get into the Facebook group? I know the email says that it may take up to two weeks, but I am wondering it is happening sooner than that. I still haven’t totally settled on a word, so I thought if I could read the list, maybe it would help a word rise to the top.

Introduce yourself! Hi! My name is Tanya. I live in Indiana with my DH. I have 3 grown children and 6 grandchildren that are the focus of my scrapbooking. I own my own business that is about to get VERY busy. What is your word for 2020? I chose Breathe as my word. Why did you chose that word? I need/want to focus on relaxing more and not letting things get to me so much. Breathe just kept coming back to me. I am already finding myself saying to myself to take a deep breath, inhale/exhale. I also want to breathe in new life, take in the smell of everything around me. I think I can find so many things to relate to with this word. Is this your first year participating in OLW? No If not what words have you had in the past? Strong Are you signed up for Ali's class? Yes Are you participating in any other similar projects/check-ins online or elsewhere? No How are you planning on documenting your word? 6x8 album. I purchased the quarterly kits. Can't wait to get started!

Love how she reused an album to make it work and love the charm she did for the spine. I really like Dearly Dee's work. Her OLW notebooks are so cool. I like how she does transparent selfies to hide the journaling. I would never have known about OLW without her. I am thinking about doing the OLW class. I have never done it before. Is it right to say that you only get what you put in? If you don't really try to do the prompts you won't make change in you life. Last year was pretty sucky for me and I want to do better this year. The class is $34. The digital kit is $14.49 and the prompt pack is $6.49. I think both are included in the class price. So that makes the class $13.02. That makes it sound reasonable but I'm still on the fence.

What day of the week does Ali's email come? last year it was on Monday’s. I’ll be honest I think the fb page is bad. IMHO it’s way too much personal complaining for me. And there’s a bunch of ‘pat me on the head’ type posts that irritate me to no end, lol.

I used the word create and I have pinterest boards that are divided into sections like create art, create knowledge,... I have an undated planner and if I feel I'm lacking in one of the categories (like endurance) I pick a quote from that section and write it in there for the day. My planner is more of a personal journal than keeping track of appointments. I'm not familiar with all of the Ali Edward prompts, but from what I have seen, I don't think most of it pertains to my life. I'm making things up as I go along with this. I've thought of making a mini album of some of the quotes that really resonate with me.

I don't take the class or document my word. Choosing a word is something I do, to have it as a guide and focus for the year. My word is >> "Less and More". I have been keeping it in mind as live my life. Currently focusing on "more" boundaries, "more" saving and "less" spending.

Maybe make a collage of photos on your phone and make your own album for your one word? You could do a lot of screen shots.
Your local library may have some free magazines. I was surprised to find them in my very small town.

How is everyone doing on their project? I'm really enjoying the project so far. It's really been a good experience for me. Having the album to work on has helped me stay focused. I've incorporated some of the goals in my day to day planner which is also helping. Did you complete your January prompts? Yes Have you started/completed the February prompt? Not yet, I had created a vision board on Pinterest as an inspiration so I may pull somethings from there to make a collage or something. I may also look at some magazines and see if anything jumps out at me. I'm not a fan of this sort of collage but I think I'm going to push myself to do something ... who knows, maybe I'll enjoy the process or end result more than I anticipate? Have you made progress on your goals? Some, but not as much as I'd hoped. I'm refocusing on a few areas ... I did accomplish one big item on my goal list which felt great. And I did a few things to set myself up for future goals. What do you need to reassess for February? I'm worried that I started trying to do too much at once. I'm re-evaluating the pieces and parts in February. And I'm thinking about building out a 'plan' for the year so I'm not trying to do too much at once.

Is anyone doing something besides a vision board this month? I’m not a fan and I don’t want to buy magazines just for this purpose. One year I drew a thing to illustrate my word and all the ideas around it. The drawing itself wasn't great but the process was interesting. I like refugeepea's idea of the Pinterest boards too. I've collected quotes and images on a board most years. Or you could do a digital collage with images found online if that fits with your skillset and preferences. I never wanted to make a big ol' board, I don't have that kind of space, but a few times I found some scrap magazines and catalogs and made a couple of 8.5x11" sized pages that I put into my album.
