Yep. In Catholic grade school a favorite punishment the nuns gave us was to 'write your roman numerals 1 to 500'. So I know them really well LOL

Yes I can. I’ve always liked them, and I’m another who would check the date at the end of movies.

Yes I can read Roman numerals, but like others have said, it takes a bit of time to work out the really long numbers. I can figure out the lower numbers. The only places I see them now are movie credits...and the Super Bowl lol!!! Haha yes, movie credits..... Sometimes I want to find out when a movie or particular episode of a TV show was made, then have to try and decipher what the heck MCMLXXXVII is! Usually I just look at the last few digits and have a guess. I'll have to ask my kids whether they were ever taught Roman numerals in school. I bet they weren't.

OK, now this is interesting.... I just looked up a chart on the internet, that I was going to show to my kids, and they explain it differently to how I was taught. The chart shows the number, then the Roman numeral, then the calculation. Some examples:
4 IV 5-1 9 IX 10-1 14 XIV 10-1+5 19 XIX 10-1+10
I was always taught to read them across from left to right as follows:
4 IV 1 before 5 (not 5-1) 9 IX 1 before 10 (not 10-1) 14 XIV 10 + 1 before 5 (not 10-1+5) 19 XIX 10 + 1 before 10 (not 10-1+10)
It doesn't make sense to say IX is 10-1. It's not even in the correct order.
How were you taught?

I can read Roman numerals and would really consider that to be pretty basic knowledge.

I was taught Roman numerals in school and often try to figure out the year when an older movie was produced when they roll the credits. Can you decipher Roman numerals? I do that too!

Yes. I remember waaay back when I first started teaching (1981), I always made sure my 7th graders knew them. This was before curriculum standards and so forth. They were taught in elementary school, but some kids didn't understand so I revisited. And on another note... so many of them couldn't read an analog clock because of the digital age.

Yes, especially the smaller numbers, I know immediately or can figure out fast. I know what I V X and L mean and after 2000, I always remember that M is 1000 since 2000 was MM. And this year is also neat number, MMXX.
I currently have a mini cuckoo clock with roman numerals and somewhere in a box is the one we got when I was 4. It is missing one of the weights...

I forgot to mention that like everyone else, I use my knowledge to figure out when a movie came out!

With the Chiefs winning the Superbowl (54th) we are looking at LIV on all of our shirts & logos.
Someone in my office said it took her several days to figure out what LIV was all about

No. I can manage 1-9 on a good day, although I can't remember where I picked it up. The texts I read use Roman numerals in the prologue. I find it frustrating to refer back to certain pages. xxiiv - xiixbv (or whatever 😂)

I can read Roman numerals and would really consider that to be pretty basic knowledge. Well consider me the idiot then.. I can read up to about six. I was never taught in school. So where would I have picked it up? My parents didn't think of it. I don't know if they know? Looks like I am a lone wolf.

(Not these days, anyway.) I mean, it's really useless knowledge to be honest! I'm sure that billions of people on the planet will get by just fine without knowing how to read Roman numerals! I forgot to ask my kids yesterday, but I'm pretty sure they didn't learn them either, and I have no reason to teach them.

You certainly wouldn't know if you've never been exposed to it. I would not consider you an idiot for that. I assumed it was taught in schools. I guess I'm the idiot for the assumption!

I can read them, have to take my time with longer numbers and like figuring out the date a movie/tv episode was released. Just asked DD and they didn't learn how to read roman numerals, but were taught a week of cursive in the third grade.

Someone in my office said it took her several days to figure out what LIV was all about I was also going to mention the Superbowl. One of my granddaughters is a football fan, and her name is Olivia. She was thrilled to see her name everywhere! I was pleased that she knew how to read the Roman numerals. I can read the lower numbers with no problem, but like many others here, have to really think about the long ones.
